With more and more phones coming out with ZERO notch, or a minimal notch like a tear drop or cutouts, how will the full sized notch on the iPhone 11 and next XR be received this year? I know Apple doesn't usually lead the way in things like this but isn't it going to be tough releasing their shiny new models this year with their still giant cutout/notch?

I will buy the new phone because the notch doesn't really bother me and I'm an Apple homer most of the time but you'd think they'd see all the phones and get a bit worried their new models will look outdated before they even go on sale. I mean the small notches started coming about a year ago and the no notches have been out for a bit now and be out even longer by the time the next iPhones are out.

Apple will probably bring out Jony Ive and talk about the new notch and how it's .5mm smaller than last year and it's a technological marvel that they could shrink it so much.

You'll have your usual bunch here in the forums squawk about it. Personally I'd rather not have a notch but accept it as a trade-off for the best biometric security on the market. I've never heard an actual person say anything about it, negative or otherwise.

Do those notchless android phones have Face ID?
And will it still have a chin instead of a notch like all the other android phones?

Don’t think they will attract any iPhone users.

Possibly Samsung s10 or Huawei p30 users with a cut out or a notch will want to switch.

The notch is not an issue.

Unlike the camera bulge which has been growing like cancer since the iPhone 6. If pics are to be believed it's grown into a full on square now. In a couple of years it will cover the entire back of the phone.

Notch isn't an issue for me at all. I barely even notice that it's there (I have a pure black wallpaper). Also if the dark mode leak is true for iOS 13, I can't wait.

The notch needs to go. Saying we have Face ID and others don’t is not good a enough.m reason. They put in FaceID, so they need to work it out to keep it with an all screen display. Don’t see anything wrong with a pop out cam till they find a way to embed in screen. Unfortunately Apple doesn’t care anymore about keeping up with the times in a lot of departments. And people will still buy so they don’t need to. We can only hope this 2019 lineup is the worst selling model in history and they have to rethink things.

Edit-I just saw Oppo under the screen cam tech. So Apple better make that happen.

This is a perfect example of the "can't please everyone" effect. I'd take the notch over a pop out camera any day. I can't imagine the issues that would arise with dust and pocket lint getting into the mechanism for that.

I get it. But an in display finger print and 5g modem doesn’t make it up to par. Just playing catch-up. They need to do something drastic and pop up cam “in the mean time” if under display cam tech would be a ok stop gap.

I prefer notch because I love Face ID. So it’ll be received Greatly

We can have both, no notch and Face ID.

Apples FaceID is second to none...other companies don't rely on it and couldn't come up with anything in the same league with how well it works so other companies simply went ahead and used the space for more screen, they simply have no reason to waste more space with the notch since they couldn't implement that technology as well as Apple did...Other companies essentially only need a small cutout since it is only housing a camera...

Did Oppo get rid of the chin as well?

Given the choice between a notch and a chin, I choose Face ID and the notch over a chin.

Company’s are achieving 98% screen to body or something like that. Which means chins are going away. With under the display camera tech, It will all soon be together in a phone. Pop up cam will give you Face ID and 98% STB ratio as well.

Don’t really want high screen to body ratios because that is accompanied by curved displays.

I will never buy a phone with curved display,

So the Oppo will still have a chin....yeah no thanks.

Notches are still superior to chins or a bottom bezel.
Flat displays are preferable to curved display.

Looks like I would still pick a 2018 iPhone XS Max over whatever curved display with bottom bezel/chin android oems are currently trying to push.

iOS13 is just gravy.

I can’t understand why people really think the notch matters to the vast majority of the hundreds of millions of iPhone users. It will be received as it’s always been received: with complete indifference by 99.9% of people — and most of them are probably not even aware of or care about other notchless phones.

For people with iPhone X or older nothing has changed...it’s there and you either deal with it or don’t buy it. For me I could care less about it.

Another notch thread? (Yes, I had to state the obvious).

Here’s how it works:

Consumers don’t care about the notch, it’s never affected them, no one has discussions about it in a circle, they use their iPhones like they would every day as a normal person. The only people that have issues with the notch on this very site, because they focus on every little aspect on the iPhone, for some it’s a problem, and for others it’s not.

Agreed. It seems the only ones who care the most about the notch are non-iPhone users.

I've had the ipx from launch and my son just bought a new one at Best Buy. He got $250 of the top and paid cash for it. Just asked him what he thought about the "notch" he looked at me confused and said I don't know what you mean. I explained and he laughed and said coming from an se with the smaller screen that is a non-issue for me. I've always thought the same thing.

To be fair I have heard people criticising the notch in the past and these people aren’t forum types. I havent heard it for a while though and like most things I think people get used to something. Then again if people don’t own an iPhone with a notch and are using older models, it’s hardly likely to come up in conversation very often.
