Did Oppo get rid of the chin as well?

Given the choice between a notch and a chin, I choose Face ID and the notch over a chin.
You are Clutching there buddy. For example the "chin" on the s10 is marginly bigger then the iPhone XS. On the other hand that iPhone notch is freaking huge. Apple fanboys never cease to amaze me. Truth is the new iPhone will look outdated but I don't think it stops people from buying it as they are deep in the Apple ecosystem.

With more and more phones coming out with ZERO notch, or a minimal notch like a tear drop or cutouts, how will the full sized notch on the iPhone 11 and next XR be received this year? I know Apple doesn't usually lead the way in things like this but isn't it going to be tough releasing their shiny new models this year with their still giant cutout/notch?

I will buy the new phone because the notch doesn't really bother me and I'm an Apple homer most of the time but you'd think they'd see all the phones and get a bit worried their new models will look outdated before they even go on sale. I mean the small notches started coming about a year ago and the no notches have been out for a bit now and be out even longer by the time the next iPhones are out.

Apple will probably bring out Jony Ive and talk about the new notch and how it's .5mm smaller than last year and it's a technological marvel that they could shrink it so much.
You are equating a single selfie camera that all Android phones have with FaceID technology, and bash Apple for doing the more advance technology? Notches on iPhones as a purpose, while all the stuff Android does are just copying the looks with plain old selfie camera. Yeah making it a pop up or shark fin doesn’t mean much, it’s still the older tech.

Agreed. It seems the only ones who care the most about the notch are non-iPhone users.
Because they know they cannot have the tech behind it, so they go all the way bashing the iPhone look and pretend their old selfie camera is superior just because of the looks.

Some people prefer a plain grey t-shirt vs one with brand logos.

The people that love the notch like showing off they have an iPhone.
Don’t they realise most people don’t care that yet another person has an iPhone though? It doesn’t really have much impact when pretty much everybody has an iPhone surely?

This doesn’t make any sense, when purchasing an iPhone with a Notch, the consumer doesn’t have a choice in the matter with the notch existing Or Not. That’s like saying someone purchased an iPhone 8 to show off the bezels, no one does that and certainly no one cares about the notch outside this website.

You just expressed the perspective of the majority of phone purchasers out there. Delta a few very vocal folks (that are an absolute minority), most people really don't care.

First of all, that part I quoted was amusing. :D

Second, I was at my local Apple store the other week and gave the XR a trial.

I got on fine with the new swipe gestures which was great considering I'm constantly on the home button.

The one thing I cannot avoid is either gaming or watching content without a twinge of OCD, because the notch is constantly there, unlike the on screen display or dare I say it, the volume display!

I gave it a fair trial, just like the touchbar on the new MacBook Pro, and both are just not for me.

That makes me wonder if the touchbar will be revised w the new design macs / keyboards or if it’ll be the same slab of OLED and functionality for a long while

Ughh

Not the notch to me that is a big no big deal but I still miss a traditional headphone jack. My hearing is so bad that Bluetooth headphone sounds are to low. It makes me so sad I cannot listen to music.

The $9 adapter from Apple (or cheaper on Amazon) doesn't work for you?

Don't be sad, you must have the wrong BT headset. Check out some others as my Bose noise cancelling headphones are louder than anything I used to plug in.

Face ID was a choice to use instead of under screen Touch ID because at the time, several years ago, it -seemed- to be a better solution overall- also they could implement animoji with it to thrill the kiddies.
But under screen ultra sonic Touch ID technology has improved since then, making Face ID with its signature gigantic notch less attractive to the customer who's not enamoured with animoji.
I think the problem with FaceID now IS the animoji. Apple seems to be really into that garbage and the 3D camera is necessary to make it to work.

So all of you notch haters, you can blame your misery on this guy-

After using FaceID for nearly the last 2 years count me out of wanting to go back to TouchID. TouchID on my iPad is such a poor experience in comparison to FaceID on my phone (having to place your finger in a certain spot and it not working when my hands are wet/damp/sweaty). If my iPad Pro weren't otherwise serving me just fine I would upgrade it just to get FaceID alone.

The ultrasonic touch sensor is an of the shelf Qualcomm component anyone can use it, even apple.

Same can’t be said for apple. They have been developing Face ID since 2013, the same year the launched Touch ID.

Yes Animoji’s are cool and everyone loves them, but Face ID is also a way of unlocking the iPhone and iPad Pro. That’s it’s primary feature.

FYI: emerging markets love gimmicks like Animoji. ;)

As anticipated, iOS13's dark mode seems to hide the notch pretty much system-wide. Will that satisfy the notch haters? I doubt it.
Plus I haven't even noticed the notch anymore since all the apps I used finally coded around it.

Some people will complain, usually the same people that complain about everything. Most people won't even notice it and won't be concerned at all.

The notch will be received in 2019 just as it was in 2017, which is a non-issue outside tech sites. On sites like this, every feature/specification is broken down on an iPhone over those who find fault in things. It’s all _very_ subjective, but none of it really makes it a fact because somebody doesn’t like the notch or not.

I find this odd because I’d expect people on tech sites to be really excited by new and better technology such as faceID.

The opposite seems to be the case though with many people on tech sites wanting things to stay the same and no new/better features to be added.

It’s totally the opposite of what I would expect.

That’s just because their brand of choice still doesn’t have Face ID. :D

Remember the iris scan... and all the arguments about it being the future and without that feature apple had lost all innovation and iPhone users are stuck in the past.

Or the removal of the 3.5mm jack....

The notch probably has been the most controversial move Apple has made, at least with the amount of threads on here, you probably would already know that, assuming you’re paying attention to how disgruntled some are that it exists. But my point being, outside of Tech sites, I’ve never heard anyone discuss the notch in the slightest, because people don’t care about it or allow it to disrupt their daily lives to make threads about it.

Surely most people like the extra screen space the notch gives them? I’m yet to fathom why some people want less screen space.
