That's where the major OEMs need to undercut the S8. I think people would rather spend $400 on a HTC 11 than $800 on a S8. Especially if the only difference is processor performance. If the HTC 11 features 6gb of RAM, Samsung cannot beat that because their RAM management is woeful to say the least. I am expecting big things out of the S8, but I am not spending $800 on that phone. I would rather buy the OP3T or OP4 for $400.
Lol, I was perusing the OP3T thread earlier today. I've always been all about the camera quality. The cheaper OEM's are actually starting to catch up. My iPhone 7 Plus camera is amazing but I do get some inexplicable dud shots out of it and have some lost moments as a result. I do have quality point and shoots and a DSLR but some moments and opportunities are just too fleeting and it can take so long to get a regular camera ready to shoot, even a point and shoot...even if you opt to not carry a case. My phone cameras, however, at this point are practically an extension of my hand.

I used to feel bad about not being more graceful at using my real cameras but when it comes to kids and school events the atmosphere can be so chaotic I've seen some of my more savvy photographer friends fumble a bit with their cameras, too. Only one or two are real prosumers who can operate big or complicated cameras like wizards. Lord knows I've tried, but there are some gifts I can't seem to obtain and being a whiz with an SLR is one of them.

Anyway, getting back to the point I was supposed to be making before my mind wandered, the gap is closing for the cameras and at some point it will be hard to justify the price of the premium flagships. They're going to be for the people who want features like sharks with laser helmets or something.

Speaking of cheaper OEMs, let's see how the Nokia brand will be applied to new Android devices because the brand had Carl Zeiss as their Lumia Windows Mobile brand.

Well software wise it will be same as the recently released Nokia 6

Remember this is not the same Nokia, it's essentially just FoxCon.

Software wise, I expect big named "successors" to stick close to stock. Some parallels to stock there from the video. Alcatel did the same with Blackberry DTEKs. I am impressed with the Nokia 8 specs. That's what the S8 should've been. I really want the S8, but I might cave in one of these days and just buy a cheaper competitor device if it's in my budget. However, I do want to see if Samsung and T-Mobile offer some incentives for me to purchase a S8 or even consider a trade in of the Note 5. I told myself no spending $800 on a phone.

Controlled leak to help HTC get over the LG/Samsung (and Motorola, Nokia, Huawei) hype machines?

http://www.phonearena.com/news/HTC-...e-buttonless-HTC-phone-still-possible_id91553

HTC Edge Sense spotted: the buttonless HTC phone still possible?
The form is very much like what I already have. The specs sound good and Daydream support is most welcome. But I do hope it just goes with Google's AI. Sense AI doesn't sound appealing. I often find myself fighting Sense UI to get what I want. I don't know if I want to meet Sense AI. That's just way too many AI "personalities" to contemplate. I suppose it is a form of Google's Assistant optimized to match Sense UI.

Agreed, especially since Htc made headlines last year by eliminating duplicate apps and features.

Isn't a new HTC coming out real soon?

: shrug :

Supposedly?

There's been very little leaks. I can't tell if it's because they have nothing really planned or if simply nobody cares as much about HTC. Either way, they better have something soon. The HTC Ultra U is not going to be enough to compete with the combined onslaught of LG's G6 and Samsung's S8.

What little info we have from rumors, though, sounds like HTC could have something really interesting in those side-touch controls. So hopefully we find out more soon.

Regardless of anything else, I've been a big advocate for Google to simply buy HTC.

It makes sense to me on multiple levels. They are a struggling company with a lot of expertise but clueless leadership and an inability to compete with Apple and Samsung. They made the Pixel - Google should do it.

It didn't work with Motorola, it wouldn't work with HTC. They'd screw it up just like their messaging platform.

Crickets.

Sounds just about right when it comes to htc.
I'm willing to look. In my opinion there were only a handful of modest improvements they need to make to the HTC 10. I quite like mine though I hated the news aggregator and the Blinkfeed part of the launcher. It was bugged and I couldn't ever get it to include my calendar properly.

Water resistance would be a nice upgrade. I'm not expecting it to survive a spin in the washing machine like an LG G6 but I'll take the same level of water resistance an iPhone 7 should have.

I just worry because I saw what they've done with the U-Ultra and wonder if they understand what they needed to do with the HTC-11.

Every year I say the same thing about htc and every year they just can't seal the deal with me. Either it's priced wrong or the camera isn't matching competition standards, or no waterproofing or something else.

But my interest is peaked this year due to those earlier leaks of a touchable and usable edge/side panel of the device. Could be innovative and novel in the smartphone space.

We'll see soon. Hopefully march 20th brings exciting news from htc. The ultra U reviews do not bring me much optimism either.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/0...dragon-835-flagship-u-april-according-report/

HTC will reveal its Snapdragon 835 flagship, the U, in April according to report

Over the past few months, there has been rumors that HTC was working on yet another flagship device for 2017, codenamed 'Ocean'. According to VentureBeat, this one will be powered by the new Snapdragon 835 processor - the same one the North American Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus models are expected to use. It is also expected to have a 5.5" WQHD (2560x1440) display, a 12-megapixel back camera, a 16-megapixel front camera, a microSD card slot, and Android 7.1 (with the Sense 9 skin). Its launch name will simply be the 'HTC Ultra.'

Like the HTC U Ultra and its ticker display, the Ultra will also have a gimmick - sensors in the device frame that can detect squeezing or swiping along the edges. These actions can be mapped to various apps or actions.

The phone is expected to be officially announced in mid to late April, with a full global release in early May.

HTC deserves everything that is said in the comments section.

I also think LG has risen and taken the place of "alternative to Samsung." Last year, I said the HTC One was a great counter option to the S7 if you weren't feeling Samsung's skin or whatnot, but this year, I think that title goes to LG and the G6.

Regardless, more choices are nice. Let's see how HTC messes up this year... =T

Report: HTC U to Feature 5.5″ WQHD Display, Snapdragon 835 and ‘Squeezy’ Gesture Goodness

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.droid-life.com/2017/04/04/report-htc-u-specs/amp/

As of right now, it’s reported that the U will feature a 5.5″ WQHD display, Snapdragon 835, 4GB RAM (6GB in select markets), 64GB/128GB storage options, 3,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 technology, 3D Gorilla Glass 5, fingerprint reader, and Android 7.1+. Honestly, if you were designing your own phone, these specs are pretty much your starting point for a flagship in 2017. And to be clear, that’s a good thing.

Now, onto the more interesting stuff, which includes this thing called the Edge Sensor. As reported before and backed up by this latest intel, HTC is building in additional touch sensors into the edges of the phone. With these sensors built-in, the phone will be able to feel various types of squeeze and presses. For example, you can program a squeeze that prompts Google Assistant, or a squeeze that opens up your camera. The point is, no longer will you need to unlock your phone to begin certain actions; a few squeezes are all that’s required.

Sounds interesting... o_O

(BTW, some of the comments are gold.)

From Evan Blass:

One X10: a 5.5-inch full HD display, a MediaTek Helio P10 chipset with 3 GB RAM, a 16 MP rear camera, and an 8 MP front one. Leaked pictures so far also show the device sporting HTC's signature metal casing, as well as a rear-facing fingerprint scanner, which is a rarity for the company. The phone will reportedly be sold in the ballpark of $300, so at least you can't accuse HTC of overpricing all of its devices.

I was a huge fan of the 10, but this looks like a 10 demo unit that just got pushed into production. Where's the refinement and style HTC is famous for? This company continues to shoot themselves in the foot. Whether it's a great design with a bad camera (M8 & M9), or removing front facing speakers (10), or having ridiculously large bezels (U Ultra), these guys just can't seem to put it all together. Pity.

I'm not sure what to make of the rumors about the squeeze interface. It could be a gimmick that leads to something significant in the future or it could be a gimmick that is a hot mess. It depends on how much it interferes with the use of cases and how it impacts battery life and whether or not it requires you to think too hard about using it. You always want the user interface to get out of the way. Not draw attention to itself. Which seems to be a problem for too many people with the Apple touch bar.

It almost seems like a downside to me, reducing the total surface area I can use to hold the phone.
