Looks like it has done extremely well in the camera dept. Scores a 103 on DxO labs.

No notch too!

I think it’s quite an attractive design and the ‘squeeze’ functionality offers something unique, especially as it’s customizable. I’m not put off by an LCD display—just want it to look nice and it had HDR support so that’s great. Looks like early impressions of the camera are quite favorable as well.

My reservations are, as usual for me, in regards to support, both of the hardware and software. I never found Sense too heavy (though I haven’t used it in quite a long time) but with HTC a shell of the company it used to be, how timely will software/security updates be? Same goes for service if my device suffers from hardware issues.

Still nice to see HTC plugging away at it and putting out what appears to be very good smartphones.

The biggest concern for me is definitely Sense.
According to some early hands on that I have read, some sense apps are the same as what they were over 4 years ago. Like LG, it appears as though they need to spend some time working on their software.

Having said that, I like the sound of Sense in some ways, particularly being able to remap Edge Sense to whatever you want.

The phone itself looks really good. I’m half tempted. The 10% off is enticing.

Lol, Apps that are the same as 4years ago? In other words they have not seen any real change since the 2nd HTC One device, the One M8!? That is very worrying. Considering that Google and Samsung have pretty much revamped almost everything in their UIs since 2014. We are a long way from the Nexus 6 and Note 4, and what they brought.

I’ve read very little about the specifics of the user experience but I seem to recall last year that HTC ditched any apps that were duplicates of Google’s suite that come with having Play Services installed. What apps are we talking about?

I couldn’t tell you the specific apps but I’m presuming it’s the dialler, clock, calendar, weather?

You only have to watch the hands on videos (for me) and look at the UI to see that it looks like the same thing that was present on HTC’s from years ago. There’s just seemingly no progress on that side of things which is a shame.

I've owned HTC 10, and it was a fantastic device. Build quality superior by far even to something like iPhone or Samsung S/Note. Only real issue was lousy wi-fi signal, and that was the reason I ditched the device. But till this day, that was the best phone to hold in hand. A real 'man' phone, heavy, metal, and buttons were really great to push! (hard to describe it, but they had great feel to them).

Everything expect really lousy wi-fi signal was great. Especially software.

Now, that was the first device that they pushed without their own apps (email, browser, etc.).
Now, don't take my word for it, I really can't remember that far in the past (hic!), especially because I've owned that device about a month or so, but they didn't have a dedicated calendar app, or clock, or weather app.

Only dedicated app that they really had was HTC dialer. And I do hope that they still have it, because HTC always had the best dialer ever, on all phones, any OS.

Their dialer was 'smart'. Lets say I have a person named 'John Smith' in my contacts, and some more Johns also. If I type Joh + S, it would recognise it right away. Something Samsung dialler still doesn't support. And If I had multiple 'Johns', without surname, but I would occasionally call one John more then others, HTC dialler would remember that, and put that John in first place.

If I were in charge in Google, I would either copy/paste HTC dialler into stock Android, or just purchase that part from HTC.

So I believe you are mistaken. HTC ditched their apps, everything except dialler (can't speak for phone later then HTC 10 though), and rightly so! I would install their dialler on every phone out there. Especially iphone :)

Oh it is looking that way.
Like I've said, it was a passing comment by a reviewer in a YT vid I watched yesterday. There were no specifics. I've never owned a HTC phone before so im not best placed to judge.

All I know is that ive read of people on here using Sense in the past and aren't too fond of it and the general early hands ons aren't exactly praising it either. But good that you like it. :)

If I could get one for about $100 less than what they're selling for, I would get this over the OP6. I have always loved HTC devices, and this pretty much has absolutely everything I would want in a phone, but I'm just not sure I'm willing to pay $800 for it. I'm looking at saving money by coming back to Android - and that isn't the way to do it!

I like it, always preferred htc to samsung

I wonder if the facial unlock is just like the OP6 w/ just a faster version of Trusted Faces? Who is the next company to use 3D facial recognition hardware on Android? Google?

I would pay $600 for the HTC device at most. Especially since OP exists. I am going to give Moto a fair chance on Tuesday to see what they offer. If not, I may explore the OP6 or going with a stop gap w/ the LG G6 or Pixel/Pixel XL first gen.

I'll be waiting patiently to see how this phone holds up. While i dislike Samsung I will say the build quality is good and the s8 holds up quite well after a year.

Battery has gone to crap but that's expected.

Some reviews are trickling in for this phone.
Seems the battery is a bit of a let down which is a shame.

I also just watched a camera comparisson with the Pixel 2, and it was quite clear in a lot of shots that the Pixel was better. Just handled dynamic range way better along with not blowing out light sources, which the U12+ did in a fair few shots.

It still amazes me, that with one lens, the Pixel 2 is still basically beating everything else. It's just an absolute beast of a camera.

I have read the same about battery performance.
It is amazing what Google does with their post processing algorithms.

Bezels seem kind of big for almost 800 and it being 2018, they should have at least notched it to save the status bar space and increased screen real estate. Poor HTC, always a year behind, I'm surprised they are still around.

After lukewarm reviews of the U12, we ask the annual question: is this the last year for HTC? Is this the final flame?

It seems like they are doing some things right, but really messing up in other areas.

Also, that thing I read has reared its head from a lot of reviewers again. It is the dialler app, and some other HTC own apps that have NOT been replaced by Google variants that are dated and the same since like 2012 or something crazy.

The 'buttons' or rather the force touch things that act as buttons are also, supposedly terrible, which is a massive deal breaker to some as often they just don't register / work.

It's another case of near yet far for me with HTC, and I still haven't ever owned one of their devices. If they continue as they are, chances are I never will.

Remember HTC's past gamble with the Ultra-pixel camera? That fell on its face. Now, another gamble with solid-state buttons. And another fall.

How could the power button not absolutely pass QC before they implemented this gimmick? It's such an important button.

While we're on HTC-gimmicks, I think the squeeze function is one of the most silly features on the Pixel 2 as well. More often than not, you have to adjust your hand to squeeze or you squeeze entirely by accident activating Assistant when you don't want it. The squeeze function might make sense if your screen was locked, but even then, if you squeeze for Assistant, you still have to unlock your device before you can proceed.

I'm wondering the same thing. I was actually really excited about the U12+ but they definitely dropped the ball with it. Oh well, the last HTC phone I actually owned for longer than the 14-day return period was the One X. Great phone but after that, the cameras in their phones just weren't up to snuff with other flagships... until the U11... was actually a brilliant phone but 16:9 in a 2:1 world and the price was too high.
