a better place
Judging from sales, i would say no.

The camera has improved. It was better than the M7 & M8 off the bat, and with recent updates not too long after it release the software processing issue it was having was fixed and the M9 camera is really sound.

It's just too late. I think HTC would have done better not releasing at the same time as the S6/S6e. They completely overshadowed it and it would have been better for them to let the steam die down on the Samsung launch before launching the M9 - as it stands now I can't see sales ever improving.

While I agree about it being too late for htc, I honestly don't think releasing the m9 earlier or later would have had any impact.

The camera has gotten much better. Daylight performance is great, and in many occasions better than the iPhone's. Low light performance is good, especially if you use manual mode or RAW. I returned to the M9, because the 5.1 corrected all issues I originally had with the device:
  • Camera is really good
  • The slow charging issue has been solved
  • There is an option to change the color calibration of the display. Before the update colors were very cool. I like cooler colors, but this was really extreme.
  • Android 5.1 provided performance and battery improvements.

All in all, I love my M9, despite HTC's bad marketing. The overall experience is great. People unfortunately judge mostly very poorly and look only on the surface of things. I wish HTC a fast recovery and hope that we will see many great devices from them in the future.

The other reason I returned to my M9 and sold my iPhone 6 was, that the new iPhone 6S won't have anything that will make me feel excited about. Better CPU, same display, better camera and force touch..This is not enough.

I disagree.
If their overall experience is great they would have sold more phones.

HTC got hammered by the press. HTC made a lot of mistakes. They should have waited till the M9 was ready and then release the device. You know what they say, first impressions are very important.
HTC doesn't have the marketing presence of Samsung and Apple and they cannot compete with them. Of course if the M9 was praised by the press, they would have sold many more, but never on the level of Apple. There are much worse Android phones out there that didn't get hammered by the press. The LG G4 for example has almost the same design as the G3. The Sony Xperia Z4 looks almost identical to the Z3. The M9 looks identical to the M8 and the press attacks HTC..
HTC should minimize the mistakes and produce top hardware. Only then do they have a chance to survive. I would also like to see an HTC device that gets praised for its camera..
HTC has a lot to learn, but they are not as bad as the press makes them.

I never had a HTC, but I always liked the design.
What concerns marketing. I have never seen an Apple ad, but a number of HTC ones over the last months.
I wish this Company well, as they are doing something different and good.

Why would you want HTC or any company for that matter to fail?

I don't work for htc or any other mobile company, so I don't particularly care if they fail or succeed. However that being said, it's almost foolish to think this device will be anything but a resounding failure for htc.
They could have done better, they should have done better, they didn't. Their failure are their own.
