of course they will

Why in the world would you develop something like hulu, and then limit who can watch it? That makes absolutely no sense. Hulu wants as many eyeballs as possible, and they'll figure out a way to make it work. That said... the only way they won't support it is if Apple doesn't let them.

Define mobile.

How would watching Hulu in a coffee shop on an Ipad be any different than on a laptop?

mobile as in the ipad runs on iphone os and a laptop would run on windows/os x/linux. hulu would likely block mobile safari from using their site, they couldnt block a full blown web browser like ie/firefox/chrome/safari without blocking desktop users as well.

I don't know if you are paying any attention what people are saying, but Hulu already actively blocks people from using their site based on the type of license they have for the content.

*People outside the US
*Mobile phone browsers (Skyfire on WinMo is a browser that can play Flash video and after about a week of it being released Hulu actively blocks people using that browser)
*Devices primarily designed to connect to a TV; the PS3's built in browser is blocked from using Hulu for example

The question is whether how the iPad will be interpreted under the license for their content. Will it be classed as a mobile device (like a phone, which they already block) or a portable computer (like a laptop, which is covered under their content agreements). If the latter, it's just a technical hurdle. If the former, they'd either have to redo their licensing, or they wouldn't be able to have an iPad app.

Hulu Might Support the iPad by Launch

TechCrunch is reporting that Hulu may be working on ways to support the iPad by launch time by switching to solutions similar to Vimeo and YouTube.

I think it only makes sense for Hulu to do this as we all likely suspect Jobs won't ever support Flash on the iPad.

Another plus is that people will then have one less gripe about the device.

Thoughts?

Flash is much more than video. Jobs will still deliver a crippled device that will be inferior to netbooks for web surfing, multitasking, etc. Don't get me wrong. I love Apple products. My Macbook Pro is the best computer I've ever owned. My iPhone is the best phone I've ever owned (even though mobile Safari sucks). But why buy an iPad? It's a large iPod Touch and it won't get you the "real" Internet.

While it would be nice to have a Hulu app, just like the Youtube app. I have my doubts if Apple will open it's doors to a an app that provides "free" tv shows that directly compete with it's own TV library at 1.99 or 2.99 on iTunes.

Yes I hope it happens, as I find may other players like Plex and Boxee interfaces much better for browsing Hulu content that the native site. An app would be great to see but I don't know if it will ever make it on an Apple device. I'll keep hope alive for it though as with a Hulu app would nearly complete my need for any flash based sites. Now if Disney comes thru with a ESPN and ESPN360 makeover that comes to the iPhone/iPad I'm a very happy man :)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Apple can reject any app for any reason.
Much the same process as is used for
games on PS3, XBOX, or Wii. Legally they
can do it.

I don't even get all this Hulu crap... I don't see anything worth watching on it anyways.

With all the hits Apple has taken regarding Flash on the iPad, I really don't think they would reject a Hulu app. I think the press would really jump all over this. Also, they already allow the NBC and TV.com (CBS) apps. And who knows, it might not even be a Hulu app, it could just as easy be non-Flash Hulu website.

Hulu on the iPad that will make Apple happy

Lately I've been thinking about Hulu on the iPad.

Hulu is in direct competition with iTunes so Apple must not be too eager with having a Hulu app on the iPad.

But what if Hulu strikes a profit-sharing deal with Apple? For every video (w/ ads) streamed to the iPad Apple gets 50c-75c? (or whatever).

That would be another cash cow for Apple. :)

The question is, is Apple going to release an ad-supported streaming feature in iTunes in the future?

just a thought.

Hulu doesn't make any profit now so what would they share.

They are likely going to a subscription fee model in the future.

It is in hulu's best interest to make themselves available to apple products, as it will hurt them more than it hurts Apple. Apple is highly profitable now, Hulu is not. Hulu needs for their site and content to be as accessible as possible.

It won't be if they don't adapt.

That being said rumors exist that Hulu has been working on an iphone app for a while now and will announce it along with their subscription model announcement.

So I would say until then we should just wait and see.

...then Apple gets a share of the subscription fee ;)

Well, Techcrunch is hearing that it's being worked on:

http://techcrunch.com/2010/02/10/hulu-ipad/

Interesting article but the final statement "At this point, the iPad needs Hulu more than Hulu needs the iPad." is 100% wrong.

Hulu is not making money, so it doesn't matter how many billions of hits a month it is making. It can't afford to give up customers. Sounds like they have the capabilities to make something that will work on these devices and I suspect they ultimately will.

Apple makes lots of money, hulu does not, saying the iPad needs hulu more than the other way around is a mistake.

I don't even get all this Hulu crap... I don't see anything worth watching on it anyways.

And get off my lawn! :p

Honestly, Hulu + Boxee + Netflix on a Mac mini hooked up to a HDTV is a great experience.

If Hulu were available on the iPad in some fashion I'd set aside the money for it right now, regardless of the lack of flash support.

the Slingplayer for the iPad trumps your setup ;)

hehe, dont get excited... lets see what AT & T thinks

If this is true the app would be wifi only, which would basically make it irrelevant to the average person, the only ones who would benefit are people that spend a lot of time in hotels.

More apps?

The only thing that worries me is that the trend will be to create apps for every Flash dependent site rather than changing the websites. I don't want apps for every website taking up memory.

I think that's the trend. Especially if iPad turns out to be a hit (which I believe it will be), more and more flash-based website will crank out an App specifically for iPad.

Making the app WiFi only would decrease mobile Hulu viewers, the market Hulu is not licensed to serve from content owners. That said, Hulu could just as well use IP address/routing lookup to prevent video streaming over cell phones.

I would much like to see HTML5-based web solution over Hulu iPhone app, if only to see Adobe Flash's dominance decline.
