Humane is not issuing a recall or refunding customers, but it will be providing customers with two months of the Humane subscription for free.

Does the US have any consumer protections at all? In Australia this is literally illegal - new products must last a “reasonable” amount of time which sounds ambiguous but means the manufacturer can’t just slap a 3 month warranty on a product. Well, they could, but it wouldn’t hold up in court if a $700 product died after 3 months. You’d expect such a product to last at least 3 years and therefore you’re essentially covered for 3 years regardless of manufacturer shenanigans.

Customers who bought the $700 AI Pin from Humane should stop using the Charge Case Accessory that came with the device, Humane said in emails that went out today. The email, which was shared by The Verge, says the charging case "may pose a fire safety risk."

Humane claims that it is contacting customers "out of an abundance of caution." After a report of a charging issue, Humane says that it looked into the Charge Case and found a quality issue with the battery cell. A third-party vendor supplied the cell, and Humane said that it is no longer working with that supplier.

Humane is working to find a new battery vendor, and the company says the problem is limited to the Charge Case. The AI Pin, Battery Boosters, and Charge Pad are not impacted, so the device can still be charged.

Customers should stop using and charging the Charge Case Accessory "immediately." Humane is not issuing a recall or refunding customers, but it will be providing customers with two months of the Humane subscription for free.

The AI Pin, which launched in November, is a standalone device that was designed specifically for AI. It attaches to a clothing item using a magnetic battery system, and it responds to questions and queries. There is a "laser ink display" that is able to project information onto the user's hand, and a built-in camera.

Humane's AI Pin did not fare well in reviews, and it was widely criticized for its poor performance.

Those six people who bought the device better be careful.

They’re former Apple designers, right? At least they tried to make something new. They just didn’t succeed.

Does anyone know of any products the Ive’s era designers have created? The only thing I know from LoveFrom is the King Charles crest, a $60k turntable, and a red nose.

I actually saw one of these in the wild recently. The person wearing it beer used it in my presence and one of my friends had any clue what it was when I mentioned it.

Maybe then the responsible thing would have been to not release for sale, a product that they probably knew was flawed right from the very start. It had zero redeeming qualities and is now a potential fire hazard as well.

I don’t see this as something worthy of praise at all. Sometimes, wisdom is knowing when to give up and when not to go ahead with something.

O...K... that's not the customer's problem. The customer doesn't have any relationship with your battery supplier, it's just your QA is bad.

Wow. So it's serious enough to stop using the product but not serious enough to recall/refund? I can only hope this is a temporary announcement until they confirm if a recall is needed, but ...

Consumer product manufacturers are generally very serious about problems where one of the symptoms can be "fire". Whether for product liability reasons or PR, companies tend to be quite eager to provide replacements (even out of warranty) when customers report excessive heat, smoke, or fire.
