It’s painful to watch Apple lose touch and become a profit-obsessed monopoly just like the rest of Big Tech. What happened to the magic?
Anybody that thinks a for profit company is somehow a savior to the masses is highly delusional. Not sure where the narrative came from that companies such as Apple or Tesla are here to save the world come from. Companies, like politicians, will tell you what you want to hear then blur the lines down the road while still trying to maintain your support. How long they can sustain it for is a different story.

Best to remove your emotions when thinking about any corporation. Apple has never had the consumer first and foremost in their mind. They have always been in it to make money and Apple now makes the most and harvests the most data. I am assuming they have more data on users then anyone else, google and facebook. Apple has all your health stats now, they will be getting your ID's for those who will move their ID digital, they have your spending, browsing, messaging, location and your photos and videos. Apple owns a massive amount of data and like any other corporation they use it to make more money.

@wonderings, at Cornell University they have an incredible piece of scientific equipment known as the tunneling electron microscope. Now, this microscope is so powerful that by firing electrons you can actually see images of the atom, the infinitesimally minute building blocks of our universe.
@wonderings, if I were using that microscope right now, I still wouldn't be able to locate any factual evidence for what you assume. But thank you for trying to contribute.

As far as I'm concerned, Apple can do what they like with my info and data, as long as they are still providing sexy products at extortionate prices I'll buy them religiously.
Seriously though, Apple products are beautiful, I never nursed a semi when I opened my Sony Vaio windows laptop all those years ago that's for damn sure

The Sony Vaio was a beautiful machine back in the day. They were the Macbook Air before the Macbook Air. And Sony too was a profit-maximizing company. It's still a $120 B company but not a monopoly -- although the Sony Walkman may have come close.

when apple was not profit obsessed was going to bankruptcy
Now? it is a trend setter in every category, everybody is comparing themselves with Apple, why? because you are not comparing yourself with a garbage product, but with the best of the best
But i guess we have another "newbie" account that hit a topic and run away

What happened to the magic?
magic? i was amazed after decades of using a windows or a mac laptop for 1-2 hours maximum in Maya without charging...now i have triple of that time, and this is happening on an Apple laptop that barley screams
magic? first airpods introduce that sent he boundaries how a true wireless headphones should work , very intuitive and no wonder now everybody is making copy cats
magic? apple watch...no words , the whole worlds knows it
iPhone , maybe no magic, but in 4 years, from the worse battery life , from the joker became the king in battery life and performance
magic?the ecosystem...handoff is by far the best and only intuitive integration...others still try to copy paste it..
Apple has its time since airpods now down to the macs...i think in the last 2 years the mac is the industry main thing...foldable are there but too fragile to be named innovative and magic for the real consumer , in these days you should not ditch a solid smartphone, no matter if its running android or iOS that is dust and water resistance for a fragile, garbage device just for the fun of having a foldable prototype. Not even the first iphone was that fragile

I think the magic just wore off for you because Apple has been around for so long and not having to make bold statements like in the past like with those colorful computers and other very unique devices that stood out among the sea of similarity. Apple is still producing magic the introduction of the M1 chip shook things up drastically and the ecosystem is insane (sure it isn't perfect). The magic doesn't always have to be from a looks perspective and the more into the ecosystem you are and actively use, the harder when the next gen thing comes out and there isn't much different as compared to someone who is brand new and can suddenly do all these things.

Plus who knows what is in the pipeline with what the AR glasses are going to end up being and with that latest announcement on shaking up the infotainment system in vehicles.

Geez. I don't know if I've ever seen such cynical replies to a thread.

Corporations can be driven to be profitable AND provide wonderful/magical products and experiences. These are not mutually exclusive. All you "any corporate entity..." and "wake up" replies smell of freshman year philosophy + Econ.

It's not as simple as "corporation bad. don't love corporation". Corporations are a collection of the individuals working there. we can all strive to do and be better.

Yes! I agree.
Long ago and in another galaxy (the Star Wars into stuff) when Apple was considered a starter up since it was and still a Windows world, Apple, led by Jobs and crew were more product based. Money issues led to the replacement (not replacement theory so loonies please clam down) with a more corporate head. Jobs went on to NEXT. Apple was in a drain like spiral (really tried to get stock then but was too damn poor). Apple replaced the corporate head with Jobs and crew and Apple kept NEXT. Apple produced OS X, iPhone, iMac and etc...fans were ecstatic along with the world. The starter up had success. The profit margins were doing well but Apple was not a trillion dollar company. I should add that Bill Gates did help.
Anyway.
Jobs, the product guy, was grooming Tim, the money guy and it was a very wise choice for the future of Apple. For more about Tim's thing
Jobs died and was replaced with Tim and Tim did what he was suppose to do very well and through the years Apple became the first trillion dollar company.
Now, does anyone think Apple became a trillion dollar company through product or Wall Street.

In a galaxy far far away and a very long time ago(yeah, Star Wars again)
I remember getting a Performa and seeing other machines(not many) able to run the software.
Apple had their reasons for ending clones and having it where only Apple machines can run Apple stuff or in a sense having a monopoly.
For a better explanation or overview try
I can't vouch for how accurately the article portrays the matter.

But in short, I agree with the purgatorio. I think, he/she is just simply stating Apple's main focus now and that's all. Okay, my bad, the focus has always been profit or why else would one have a company. So let's not get all crazy. There's a difference between making a profit and having that "love of money" thing.

I feel the same. I got a PC last year as a second computer because I wanted to use some programs that are PC only. I noticed only then how hard Apple is with its Eco system. Thunderbolt license, Airdrop, no Export from Apple notes, so much more. It’s really hard to escape or use something else. And now that people are deep into it they can start selling ads.

It was always just talk and brainwashing with anyway with Apple.

They were just saying the things they said when they were small because they wanted to keep their customers, make us feel like we were special...a community is what they were going for when all they were doing was watching out for themselves and didn't want people to leave so the only way to do that is the above tactics.

All they wanted was our money, and that's all fine and dandy but to sell out as hard as they have after they came big is so cheesy and below what other companies have done.

Shame on Apple.
