Anyone who thinks iOS 17 amounts to an “experience” needs desperately to make physical contact with grass or the bark of a tree.

I can totally understand the motivation here.

That said, not me, haha. I've been running iOS 17 since the first beta. I think you'll really dig it!
I used to have a ritual back in the days of 2 year contracts where on the off year that I wasn't upgrading (usually the S years), I would get a fresh case and maybe a new screen protector if needed and then between those things and the new version of iOS, it would feel like a practically new phone. 😄 That's one thing I have always like about the yearly iOS updates and Mac updates--you still get in on most of the new stuff without spending a dime as long as you have semi-current hardware.

I used to have another weird quirk where on the years I did upgrade, I would also do a fresh install of the OS instead of installing from backup just so I wouldn't muck up my new hardware with old software cruft. I do NOT waste time doing that anymore, but I also wasn't on sertraline back then and I am now. ;)

A tad harsh, but I don't disagree with the sentiment. It is, after all, just a cell phone. An amazing device, yes. A real life Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in your pocket, yes. Something to worship? No.

I'm pretty sure nobody in here is worshipping the phone. Well ... at least I hope not.

I get it. I didn't mean that literally--was just making a point. I'm upgrading from a 14 Pro Max to a 15 Pro Max and am still incredibly excited for it to be Friday, so I'm not above the hype. ;)
Same. I'm a gigantic Apple nerd. But Apple is also my livelihood and I appreciate the tools that Apple gives people like me and many others to thrive.

Stubbing your toe is an experience.

I don't see how someone talking about the experience of a new OS is necessarily an anti-social recluse. Many, many of us can really appreciate the differences in a new OS that we spend so much time interacting with and go out for regular trail runs with large running groups, spend time with our Malamutes every day, attend concerts, and so on.

Appreciation of a piece of tech doesn't preclude other activities, after all.

I think that once Continuity made its way throughout everything and they started adding new features in tandem because of it, the whole ecosystem started making me feel like I was just flying through tasks.

At work I really have to think fast. I have multiple stakeholders to keep happy and they are great to work with, but they think and talk fast and they expect me to do the same. I love that I can grab my iPad and make notes or sketch out a dashboard or markup a document, then days later call up that same item even if I don't have the device I made it on and never even thought to check that it was there before I left the house.

I know it's just cloud sync and it's just gadgets and in the grand scheme of things these aren't items to be drooled over 24/7, but like you said, I love them because of how much smoother and easier it is to get my tasks done when all the hardware is Apple.

You’ll find the migration/restore from backup process far easier if you update to iOS 17 on the existing phone.
Actually... that seems like that would be false. If the release version of iOS 17 is newer build than what is on the new iPhone out of the box, it may require a software update in order to restore my iCloud backup.

I always do the iOS upgrade on my current iPhone and experience the new software. Then when I take the current hardware in to do the upgrade to the new phone I have some time to see what the software is like. It also is faster to do the trade in and upgrade.

It can cause a lot of issues if you don't upgrade the old iPhone first, so I don't understand why people are willingly doing this.

I always intend to hold-off, but usually cave after two or three public betas are released for iPad rather than phone. HSBC / first direct banking app in UK was previously a show-stopper too (as they never supported betas with their banking app) but that's now changed. I did wait until GA release on Monday this year, so that's a degree of progress

In hindsight, it would've been more of a novelty to see it on iPhone 15 tomorrow, so I can relate to the OP question.

there'd be an interesting overlap / Venn diagram here examining (nonsense!) rituals between people who;

  • will never upgrade their original OS
  • wait for the GA release
  • install every beta first day (enthusiasts / people who earn their money off it)
  • hold-off to see the new OS on the new hardware first
  • set-up from new & download data from iCloud (not restore / transfer)

I always upgrade my old phone first.
But watch out. Sometimes a quick patch cycle will make your old phone a newer version than the one you unbox on launch day, which makes copying over your data from the old phone require an OS update first and then usually fails. Had it happen a couple times now. Not a huge deal, but annoying. No 17.0.1 yet, so I think we are good this year.

What kind of issues? I’ve never had a problem restoring/transferring from an older version of iOS to a newer one.
Just inconsistencies with syncing or it outright not letting you by stating that the iOS versions are different. Happened to my buddy a few times. Maybe they've addressed this issue now, I don't know.

I just tried to download the update for my 13P and it is 17.0.1. Could this cause an issue if the 15P I'm getting tomorrow happens to be on 17.0.0?

I got some news for you...

I haven’t updated my 14PM to iOS 17 yet. I’ll do it before I unbox my 15PM tomorrow. I’m also going to set up as new and manually sign in and redownload apps that I want to keep using. I prefer to do it this way and it has worked for me.

Clickbait thread #98763049876503498756.
That few? These clickbait threads come out of the woodwork whenever there’s any sort of Apple announcement. Heck, they probably happen when Apple announces its quarterly earnings!

And inevitably, they make their way to the trending bar on the homepage of MacRumors. Hot takes and absurd positions likely to get a lot of attention, likely born from trolling, pedantry, or a need for a dopamine rush from having a thread blow up and getting tons of notifications. And, when I’m active on the forum, I often see them there and get suckered into them. Ah, the life of a recovering internet addict… (I for one admit it, a lot of other people really need to take stock of their own internet usage and recognize it for the addiction it is.)
