Still happening for me on 6.1. It actually looked worse than I remembered in the first clip I linked from the animation, but it's probably just that I haven't looked at that clip in awhile, as I doubt they tweaked the algorithm at all.

Just tried it, and it does it on mine as well. Ridiculous. It HAS to be a software issue, though, it's not inherent in the screen. For one thing, it only does it when the controls disappear. Don't know if that's been discussed, I didn't want to read through 18 pages of this.

Apple really needs to fix this.

Yup just confirmed its not fixed. I doubt it will be fixed before I get the ipad 5 lol. I have a feeling it is because of the crappy LG screens Apple went to.

No contrast switching for me.

Where are you all based? USA?

I have but only for the 4 examples in this thread and only one example where it happens during playback and not paused while hiding the controllers.

Try as I may,I cannot replicate it with any other videos and I have watched hundreds of them.I have been watching them with a microscopic eye so it's not like I just don't notice it.Weird.

I bought mine in Hong Kong.

Wow that's horrible. I thought Apple didn't make mistakes. (I'm looking at you, Steve Jobs!)

Just kidding, Apple has made tons of glaring mistakes. This one seems to be a software issue, so either (a) 6.1 fixed the problem (only read the first post, so I don't know) or (b) there might be a tweak to fix it when the jailbreak comes out (still waiting not so patiently!)

i... THINK i see it?

but it might be my eyes ****ing me over after going from almost complete dark room (dark image in video, paused) to bright light right in my face.

i mean, the mind is pretty easy to screw with.

honestly, i dont give a flying hoot. its fine as it is. and i couldnt be happier. those 2 seconds? dont seem to cause a problem

It's really inexcusable that Apple can't even get something as basic as watching movies to work right on the iPad. I just got the iPad 4, and the contrast pumping reared it's ugly head during the first movie I watched...The Dark Knight Rises. That, and the trouble I had to go through to get an iPad with a decent screen make me reluctant to give them any more of my business. Currently, their quality control appears to be subpar.

I have the same problem

I have the same issue. I have noticed this issue when i watched this youtube video http://youtu.be/Bf_ZMUibLVA
To trigger the bug watch the video on the youtube app onfull screen and keep the brightness low. after the video ends look at the thumbs up thumbs down buttons, you can clearly notice how the colors are washed out.

Got a replacement

I went to apple store today and got a replacement. same problem, it seems that all the iPad's are affected.

Same problem

I'm from Bucharest, Romania. I've been following this thread for a while and I'm surprised there hasn't been a larger amount of complaints on this issue on other forums. My iPad4 has it, it's extremely noticeable when I get back to my home icon grid after watching a dark enough video on the Youtube app or Safari. Funny thing, as somebody else mentioned, it doesn't happen with all black images that fill the screen - I even took a snapshot of the black video ending and kept it on the screen for a few seconds, then pressed the home button and everything was fine. I was going to take it back to the store, but today I got my hands on another iPad 4 in an Apple showroom and I replicated the issue. There was nothing wrong with the older models, though. So I don't know. I guess I'll wait around for something new to come up on this issue, I don't want to downgrade to an iPad3 nor will I ever get back to Android... Blurg .

So yeah, maybe it's just a faulty batch of them, but it's a damn big batch to be spread all over the world...

So you want me to go out of my way and do a really specific thing, to find a really specific problem in order to tout that the iPad has a flawed display?

I think somebody needs another hobby,

You're missing the point. This happens in EVERYDAY usage of the iPad. We're just making examples to show the type of circumstances when this happens.

I understand that this thread has gotten quite long, but please make an effort in future to try and understand what is going on.

If this happened i EVERYDAY usage then people would be complaining about this EVERYDAY, as a matter of fact there would probably be returns because of this issue EVERYDAY.

Sorry mate, I still feel that your plucking at straws, trying to find anything wrong with your new shiny device, and what you have found in my opinion isn't a problem, if it was then we would all be agreeing with you.

It's the nature of mass market digital products:

- Many people may never watch much video on their iPads.

- Beyond that, some people may never watch videos that cause the contrast/brightness to get crazy. (For example, it happens for me in almost every film I watch, but almost none of the YouTube videos I routinely watch.)

- Finally, some people just aren't super attentive about stuff like this - and it appears to use an algorithm based on some kind of short rolling average of what's on the screen, so the transition is usually smooth and minor over time.

It's not an elitist thing. It's not "I don't think my super duper expensive device should be flawed, Apple has lost me as a customer." It's just incredibly annoying for the letterboxes to turn gray when I'm trying to waste time watching Pirates of the Caribbean.

This happens to my iPad 4, whenever I watch my Optimum TV app only. Looks like I am not the only one on this issue, after all.

BTW, I don't get this display issue, when watching HBO GO or other movie/videos.
