I have been following this post and it didn't really seem to bother me until last night when I was watching Red Dawn in the dark and the contrast was constantly trying to correct itself and made it unwatchable. Something needs to be fixed

I got a call from Apple, and they said the engineering team wanted to know the steps to reproduce this issue. Frustrating, since I had given them all the info, including this thread.

Anyway, still waiting on resolution to this, as many of you are. Will continue to update till this issue is addressed!

Appreciate the updates. Hopefully this will be resolved eventually.

Can't reproduce this on mine and I always obsessively notice tiny little flaws like this so my ipad probably isn't affected.

Seriously? Did they no know this "feature" was built in?Frustrating indeed. The whole dynamic contrast thing I am getting used to but the auto back-light adjusting during dark scenes like the opening credits of a movie is just flat out annoying in a darker room. Once again thanks for keeping us up to date.

It is ridiculous. It feels as if I'm speaking to an entirely different company the way they're handling this. It's like they don't know their own product at all! *big Internet sigh*

Anyhoo, waiting on that call back...

this isnt a flaw. it adjusts right after. it just takes a while to adjust. didnt notice this until after reading this thread.
watched a movie last night on my bed in the dark and it was apparent when the movie ended

I really suggest you read the first post, and other posts in this thread. The fact that the home screen "adjusts" afterwards is not a big deal. I don't care about that one bit.

The fact that it's constantly adjusting in movies very aggressively is a big deal, however, and that's the major concern among users in this thread.

Still waiting on that call back...

I'm forever watching netflix on my iPad 4, never had or seen anything like in OP.

That's because Netflix doesn't have the issue. :) I updated the first post just now to list a few apps that do/do not experience the problem. I'm sure there are others in each category, but it will make it easier for some people to determine if there should be an issue or not.

It's important that everyone who is planning on leaving any kind of logical or thoughtful feedback at least read the original post please. We all know not ever app exhibits the issue. Netflix doesn't since it uses its own video codec. The trouble lies in apples codec, which most apps use.

I continue to be disappointed by this bug. I've posted a link to a YouTube video illustrating the issue on my iPad in the past and it remains the sole source of my Apple-rage. I just purchased the new documentary "Sound City" from the iTunes Store and the opening credits slap me in the face with gamma/contrast/brightness nonsense. I'm not looking for it, people. It's painfully apparent.

Keep in mind that I do ALL of my iPad movie viewing in flight. So I'm in a dark environment with iPad brightness set to about 90%.

Really wish they'd resolve this...

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but the Nexus 7 has the same problem. It's a Tegra 3 chip feature (PRISM) that supposedly saves battery life, but gives you the continuous brightness/contrast adjusting during video.

Fortunately you can turn it off if you have a rooted device with a simple terminal command.

This is no doubt a similar "feature" (not a flaw in their eyes), but nobody at Apple seems to know about it

"NVIDIA PRISM Display Technology* - PRISM (or Pixel Rendering Intensity and Saturation Management) reduces a mobile device’s backlight power while simultaneously enhancing the pixel color to deliver the same visual quality with substantially extended battery life."

It's been mentioned in this topic that this issue is not unique to the iPad 4 and it affects other tablets and laptops. They all just choose to ignore it.

Wonder if someone can find the same option with a jailbroken iPad 4?

So why is it there are some iPads in the world this issue doesn't affect? Could it be a display issue?

My 3 and my 4 both exhibit it.

The varying brightness levels didn't appear on my 3 at all until I updated it to iOS 6.

I think that says it all.

I tested iPad 3, iPad 2 and iPad mini at the Apple Store, and none of them exhibited the issue. Only the iPad 4. Not sure what that's about... (all running iOS 6)

Other really obvious videos that will demonstrate it (if you need to prove it to someone without downloading a new app or hunting down a URL) are the Apple Keynotes in Podcasts. They all bleach out and make the presentations look overexposed, I think in an attempt to get the gray presentation slides closer to white. It's very apparent when poor Steve's head is a shiny red-orange, and you go back to the homescreen and every colored icon is now almost white/yellow.

Nope. Was easily able to see it there. I did turn the brightness up to max, though, to make it easier, but it was no trouble for me, - or the geniuses - to see it.

I meant in terms of varying brightness. The washed out thing as a byproduct occasionally I think I never saw on 3. But both exhibited "dynamic brightness" (if we want to give it a euphemism haha)

That's just been my experience

It's not the brightness that's changing - it's the contrast.

Is this only when playing videos? Does it happen any other times?

I can't reproduce it on mine but I don't know if I'm just not doing the test right.

Only during videos.

I received a call just now from Apple from the rep I spoke to almost 4 months ago about this problem. I hadn't spoken to him in aaaaages! The engineers seem to be a little bumbling about what's going on. He's going to try and arrange an actual engineer to speak about it with me (that would be interesting). In any case, it sounds like this is going to get escalated pretty quickly now since he's double-teaming with the other rep I'd been speaking to.

What that means? I don't have any idea, but this really has gone on quite a long time now with no resolution.

Will post updates when I have them...
