If you bought from apple online or apple store directly before Oct. 1, then you're toast, it's in apple's database, as they sold to you directly not the reseller, unless you call apple and beg, then they may give it to you for $9.95 as it happened to some people.

I purchased mine from the Apple Store on Sept 3rd. I put in Oct 3rd as the purchase date, and yep, I have a copy coming for $9.95.

Are you seriously that cheap and unethical?

No I'm not cheap or unethical. I've got the means to purchase the upgrade had I not qualified for the upgrade. If you knew me, you would understand that. But purchasing a computer - at a price tag of $3400, 27 days prior to the date apple identifies to qualify for an upgrade seems like not a big deal. Had Apple not made it easy for me to get the $10 upgrade, I would have either called, or just made the purchase outright.

Let me ask you this, since you are on your high horse. Had you purchased this in the time frame as myself, you would not have attempted to get the upgrade for a lower cost?

Tough luck to those who rushed and bought from Apple before Oct. 1.
Should have bought from a reseller at cheaper price, shipping was longer, oh well, patience pays off in the long run.

Why is it "tough luck"? apple actually reached back to dates well before the announcement, which seems atypically generous.

They draw the line somewhere, and you're on the other side of it. If they set it as Sept. 1, what about the guy who bought on Aug. 31? Or Aug. 4? You can keep arguing for moving the line, but it's got to end somewhere.

You paid $3400 for a computer that you knew at the time was loaded with Tiger, and that an upgrade would cost you $120 sometime in Oct., if you wanted it. You got what you paid for, and now you're saying you should have gotten more, even though you could have waited.

If you consider lying to get a discount neither cheap nor unethical, well, that's your view of yourself.

Well, I signed up for the upgrade, since every mail I have about my order, states that my order wouldn't become "active" untill Apple received the money. The mail that confirmed the payment had the date of October the 3d on it (and I went to the bank on the 1st of Oct), so that's what I filled in, instead of 28th Sept.

Hope they let mehave it.. Kinda went to the bank to pay for the upgrade today.

And I sure as hell hope they fix the Alu iMac freezing issues -_-

I received my MBP mid July. This this a little prior to you. Are you suggesting I should falsify when I bought my machine to save some on Leopard. I only got mine about a month and a half before you, do you think I don't want Leopard for cheap? However, I am behind the cutoff, so I will be buying it.

Why are you getting so heated about this? Is it that unreasonable that people who shelled out big bucks a month ago should want the new OS for cheaper?
Apple therefore is still making a killing and spreading the market share. They flagged eligible serial numbers and they worked for $9.95 upgrade otherwise it would not work. They are shipping upgrade discs not full installers. If you think Apple has time to audit serial numbers, you better be kidding as there are millions out there, Apple would not be wasting time and resources for this, unless you are stealing a $3500+ computer from them.

Too Close!!!

I'm new to the Mac world and so far love my iMac. I waited until aug.7 for the new iMac and got it. Apple I think is cutting things way too close! I mean first we had to wait for Leopard because of the iPhone, Then we wait too long for an iMac upgrade. Now because I got my imac just 2 1/2 months before leopard release I'm out more money. Doesn't seem right. I also must mention the 2 month iPhone rebate thing. Come on already. Everybody from the release date of new iMac should get the upgrade for the $9.95. I will be thinking long and hard before I buy any new apple product when they first come out if at all?

i dunno people. anybody who was a forum member in august knew leopard was coming in october. i sure did. i bought my imac in early august knowing full well that i'd have to buy leopard two months down the road. it was worth it to me to have my mac earlier (first mac, btw). the fact that i qualify for edu pricing did make that decision easier.
i am also in the camp that thinks apple is being generous for pushing the date back to oct. 1st. or at the very least they are being very fair. i'm not going to try to take advantage of the $10 offer since i know i don't qualify.
but everyone makes their own decisions on that stuff anyway. that's fine. but i don't see getting pissed about something you knew full well was going to happen.

The Moral Police is HERE!!!

It's one thing to have a thread addressing a somewhat legitimate question (re: sharing the 5 pack), but to start a thread out and out bragging about cheating and lying their way to save a few bucks (this thread too) is amazing to me.

You can rationalize the cutoff date all you want, but the offer is stated as on or after Oct. 1st. People here aren't talking about a couple days - they're talking weeks and months. Yes, I can see if it's a couple of days, it's worth a call to the store or Apple, but it is THEIR call, not yours. Minor or not, entering false information is still defrauding Apple.

The thread(s) should be locked.

Why don't you head over to the iPod Touch Forum where users are illegally installing iPhone apps on their iPods.

You should have a lot of fun petitioning to lock all those threads too.

And how, exactly, is that related to falsifying a receipt?

I have no problem with all the hacking, except when they don't take responsibility for their actions and start blaming someone else 'cause their iPhone/iPod/Mac/? stops working. Funny thing is, they are most likely the same people who'll start whining when Apple can't verify their receipt and charges them the full price. Unfortunately, the reality will be another bunch of threads from those gloating over receiving their undeserved upgrades.

So one illegal activity is better than another. Okay...

I bought my iMac on 7th August, but it just says 'serial unknown' if you put in a date in October and 'Please correct the fields marked in red' if you select any other date.

Huh? I don't understand your grammar. Could you please explain what you meant?

Actually, fraud isn't a civil matter. Violating a EULA is quite different than falsifying a store receipt.

Enjoy the next version of OS-X at $149...

btw: People who tried it with iLife '08 got an on-line acknowledgment but it was never shipped.

edit: I still have to wonder how one can relate actually filling out false information at an on-line store with voiding your own SLA (losing warranty support, if nothing else).

I don't think I'm getting heated . . . of course everybody wants something for free or for less. My point, and that of others is simply that people knew what they were paying for in August and got it, and now are claiming a discount that Apple hasn't provided (or maybe just hasn't bothered to check eligibility for).

And I doubt Apple has millions of serial numbers to verify--there are probably a few thousand, maybe few 10s of thousands who made a purchase in the couple of months before the eligible date--pretty easy to query a database.

I agree but at time people were making computer purchases weeks before leopard release, some apple sales staff were telling people in September that you would get 50% discount for leopard by buying 4-8 weeks prior leopard release. That offer never materialized today and they mislead the public. Which I knew was BS because apple never had such offers like this for any os x releases except this up-to-date program for $10 bucks to cover shipping the discs to you.

Geez, tough crowd in here. Guess all these moral people live in glass houses.

But it got me thinking. Perhaps I should just go ahead and purchase the software. I mean we are talking about $129. I'm a firm believer in karma, and technically even though I shelled out a small fortune for my new imac, I really am not entitled to the upgrade. Damn, I guess I should have waited another 27 days. So, to all the moral people who my posting seemed to pull out of the woodwork, I WILL BUY THE SOFTWARE AT $129. So, get off your high horse, step down from the podium at the cult of mac church and get off my back.

Now for everyone talking about how bad I am for falsifying a receipt, and getting the deal cause I was 27 days too early. Ask yourself this: Have you ever downloaded music from the internet for free that you should have paid for? Ever used a torrent file to get that movie illegally? Every get a copy of software and loaded it onto your computer without paying for it? Ever buy something from a store and had the cashier charge you less than you should have paid? I didn't think so. Christ the moral majority would love to have you on their team.

I've got the order in and I'll see you in hell. I 'll be the guy sitting next to the copy of photoshop 6 that I copied from the neighbor down the street five years ago.
