Interesting discussion here. Here is my take. If Apple truly wanted to prevent anyone, who bought a Mac before Oct 1, from taking advantage of the $10 Leopard upgrade, they would have pre-programmed the online store to recognize only those serials numbers that fit the parameters. Surely, this is possible. Could they not be simply giving the early iMac purchasers a bit of a deal, although an unadvertised deal, realizing that releasing a new iMac, just several months before releasing a new OS seems a little strange? Just my opinion.

Perhaps I should just go ahead and purchase the software. I mean we are talking about $129. I'm a firm believer in karma, and technically even though I shelled out a small fortune for my new imac, I really am not entitled to the upgrade. Damn, I guess I should have waited another 27 days.

I bought my iMac in late August too, and as I started reading the thread, I got excited. Leopard for $10?! Count me in! But after thinking about it, I've decided not to try the "scam" of falsifying a purchase date. I'll pay the $129, because I think it'll be worth it.

Geez, tough crowd in here. Guess all these moral people live in glass houses.

But it got me thinking. Perhaps I should just go ahead and purchase the software. I mean we are talking about $129. I'm a firm believer in karma, and technically even though I shelled out a small fortune for my new imac, I really am not entitled to the upgrade. Damn, I guess I should have waited another 27 days. So, to all the moral people who my posting seemed to pull out of the woodwork, I WILL BUY THE SOFTWARE AT $129. So, get off your high horse, step down from the podium at the cult of mac church and get off my back.

Now for everyone talking about how bad I am for falsifying a receipt, and getting the deal cause I was 27 days too early. Ask yourself this: Have you ever downloaded music from the internet for free that you should have paid for? Ever used a torrent file to get that movie illegally? Every get a copy of software and loaded it onto your computer without paying for it? Ever buy something from a store and had the cashier charge you less than you should have paid? I didn't think so. Christ the moral majority would love to have you on their team.

I've got the order in and I'll see you in hell. I 'll be the guy sitting next to the copy of photoshop 6 that I copied from the neighbor down the street five years ago.

As far as the receipt goes: if you think it was the right thing to do, that's really an issue you have to deal with yourself. BUT - don't post the fact you're doing it on a public forum.

As for the "free" music/software/movies - all of those subjects [also] violate MR rules.

The fact so many think those activities are OK to discuss here is what prompted my post.

I guess I really do live in a different world - I've actually owned PS since version 3...

Glad someone's talked about the worth of upgrading (sorry if I missed others).

It's been 2 1/2 years since Tiger, 10.4. That's $4.30 per month for something that's the heart & soul of the Mac. Seems like a great bargain, to me.

No I'm not cheap or unethical. I've got the means to purchase the upgrade had I not qualified for the upgrade. If you knew me, you would understand that. But purchasing a computer - at a price tag of $3400, 27 days prior to the date apple identifies to qualify for an upgrade seems like not a big deal. Had Apple not made it easy for me to get the $10 upgrade, I would have either called, or just made the purchase outright.

You did what you needed to do and it worked out. :D

gr8tfly you are hardcore Apple!

You ever consider making a donation to Apple just because you like their products so much?

Nah, I got another theory...

Who thinks gr8tfly has stock in Apple? Getting people to feel all guilty, people pay full price, stock goes up... Yup that's it.

Hahaha! :D

My job here is done. :p

Seriously, though. Good call, but it honestly wasn't my first thought.

Actually, I do have some AAPL. It did occur to me (especially after seeing it close at almost 173) missing sales do affect profits. But, it really was the blatancy of these couple threads. I probably would have reacted the same if it was Photoshop.

(I guess being a regular customer, I donate all the time! Don't you? :) )

Gee whiz folks. I'm buying a copy of Leopard. Got my new iMac in like August. It's not a big deal. I'm not going to plan my computer buying around OS updates. I'm going to buy OS updates, whenever they happen.

Also, if someone doesn't mind waiting for the upgrade disks, go with Amazon for only $109. They might not be as quick on delivery as the guaranteed Apple.com date, but if you don't care about waiting, might as well save the money.

I'm going with Apple.com because I want Leopard on the day of release. It's worth the $129 just to have it day 1 to me. Crazy I know ,but it's fun and it only happens every couple years (maybe less in the future).

Apple's Warning for non-qualifiers under terms

Audit Rights

Apple routinely audits the purchases of customers through the Apple Store to ensure that only eligible purchasers have ordered and that all purchase conditions have been observed. Should an audit disclose after delivery (or should Apple otherwise discover) that you were not an eligible purchaser at the time you placed your order or that you have not observed all of the conditions applicable to your purchase, you authorize Apple to do the following:

* To charge to your credit card the difference between the amount you paid for the delivered goods and the price that Apple charged the general public for the same goods at the Apple Store, in effect on the date that you placed your order

What's the big problem of trying to get a software upgrade for a computer you paid hundred and hundreds of pounds/dollars for a couple of months ago?

You're only asking Apple in effect. If they say yes through their site, great. If they say no, think of a plan B.

how come when i put my serial number in it says
Sorry, we can't find the serial number you provided. Please recheck your serial number and enter it again

when I bough it at the apple store :(

Ok, but if we've used that same OS less than one month how much is that?

It was figured into the price we paid for the computer. You got a great deal, we got the shaft. Here is mine...so that's what like 50 dollars a day?
