I always had 3G with my iphone 3GS but that didnt mean it always worked.

that was my biggest gripe with AT&T. the coverage seemed good, i always had full bars of 3G, but it wouldn't work half the time. calls would drop and i couldnt get a reliable data connection.

with my droid on verizon if it says i have 3G (or any service at all) it works.

But they missed the boat on 3G.
IMO, AT&T/T-Mobile didn't miss the boat as much as their boat left later.

Both of the major GSM-based networks in the US (T-Mobile and AT&T) started their 3G upgrade years after the CDMA-based networks (Verizon and Sprint). Don't know if the difference in technology they use to run their networks had anything to do with that.

If anyone is curious about what specifically AT&T is doing to expand their network, they seem to be updating the link below every few days with lists of the cities that they're standing up. Most of them are rural.

I do not have 3G at home, but I do have it at work. I have no service for about 10 minutes on my way to/from work. I had much better coverage with Verizon and never dropped calls, which I frequently do with AT&T. Too bad Verizon doesn't have the iPhone. I'm only about 40 minutes outside Philadelphia, which is a fairly populated suburb. Also, I travel around the country a lot for work and it's a crap shoot for 3G coverage at any of my destinations.

Can they not go with with a different direction in their ads? I mean wow...everywhere I go I have full 3G signal. School, work, home (including the basement) and all the other places I go.

Is it just me? Anybody else in the same situation that I am?

You know, the United States is a lot bigger than the area you live in. You can't just assume that since you have great service, it's the same for every corner of the United States.

I too get great service with 3G everywhere (although it does me no good because I don't have a data plan), but I can't assume that it's the same for everyone.

I know this but I have traveled to lots of cities (Boston,Houston,Tennessee) and I always have 3G coverage :p I really must be lucky:cool:

Well, I for one know that 3G map is a lie. I live in New York and the subways fall under the 3G map but I never get coverage there. Not even edge. The map lies!

lol. Seriously though...I travel quite a bit, mostly big cities or highly populated areas. And other than places like subway tunnels and some elevators, my service is pretty good. 3G pretty much everywhere, no less than 4 bars, though slower at peak times obv. I can't remember the last time I had a dropped call.

My moms house in Seattle seems to be the black hole of 3G though...and we all have iPhones. Edge is fine though.

This isn't a defense of AT&T as I have other gripes with them but personally, coverage has never been an issue for me.

I get 3G everywhere i go also, but AT&Ts coverage in central/southern new england is seemingly excellent according to "the map" and in my travels

Since I purchased my iPhone 3G last Chrristmas, the only time I did not have 3G coverage was when I was up in Lake Placid, NY over the summer. The past year, I have been up in the New England area, NYC, Baltimore, and down to Orlando. I know they are all major cities, but I had 3G coverage the entire time. So I agree that it really depends on where you are located (or travel to).

Here's the deal. You'll get 3G coverage unless you travel outside of a 3G area or if you live in a non-3G area.

That makes perfect sense. If you're never traveling outside of a 3G area, you'll automatically think that AT&T 3G service is amazing and the coverage is everywhere. Yeah... everywhere YOU go.

The thing is... AT&T is pretty good about making sure large cities and populated areas have 3G, because that's where most people are/go. I have no problems with AT&T coverage, so the AT&T vs. Verizon thing doesn't really bother me. I'm not going to leave something that works.

I've traveled to Tennessee, specifically the Chattanooga area, a few times in the last year. I've had fine coverage in the main section of Chattanooga. As soon as I went just a few miles in any direction I lost 3G and sometime Edge as well.

Here in Tulsa, coverage is great. No problems with AT&T here.

But despite all the commercials, AT&T is really only concerned about the majority. I never have a problem when I'm at a major city or when I'm traveling between major cities. About 95% of the US population are in an area of EDGE coverage. About 75% of the US population has 3G coverage. Now I don't know what Verizon's numbers look like, but overall, I can't complain about AT&T at this point.

I should also point out that before I had my 3GS, me and my girlfriend traveled from Tulsa to Boulder, Colorado using only the maps app on my original 2G iPhone. We also did the same with my 3G iPhone going from Tulsa to Orlando, FL then to Daytona, FL and back home. Both times we didn't bring a physical map with us. Although we stayed near the major highways on our Colorado trip, we took small country roads on our way to Orlando. We always had service the entire trip.

I get 5 bars of 3G in places that the Verizon commercial shows AT&T map to have no coverage. I'm like 50 miles in the "white" zone. Verizon should be ashamed of itself.....

What do they call 50 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean...A good start....

Man, I wish I got 3G coverage every where I go. I often have full strength according to the little meter on my iPhone, but that sure doesn't mean phone calls will come through to me instead of straight to voicemail, that I will have a consistent data connection, be able to place a call, or not have said call drop 5 times before it finally goes through.

All this even after AT&T's friendly text stating that they have performed network upgrades in my area. What a joke. I love my iPhone, but it just sucks as a phone. And I can't even fully blame their network. My fiance's BB Bold, on AT&T and in the exact same locations as my 3GS, does not encounter anywhere near the amount of network trouble my iPhone has.

I got 3g everywhere I go too.

Got complaints? There is an app for that:

AT&T has launched a new iPhone application, Mark the Spot.

I don't know. How about showing off the Apps in the Android Store? Aren't they nearing something like 20 thousand? People should know that the Droid also has apps too:p

The most popular android app is the one where you play a game of
which process should I kill so my device isn't so sluggish

Luke Wilson apparently forgot to throw a Pinehurst, NC post card.

Nothing but spotty Edge service there.

There are many times when I have "full" 3G service, but in reality I have no service at all. Data won't load or it'll be 5x slower than EDGE .. it's like AT&T is lying to me and making me think I have full 3G.

My issue's not even AT&T's 3G map, it's the fact that oftentimes even when I'm somewhere with full 3G signal I'll have dropped calls, failed calls, and an unusable cellular data connection. I shouldn't have to manually drop the phone to EDGE to get it working.

If no one else noticed, the new ATT commercials never say "3G coverage", they just say "your covered".

ATT/Cingular/Southwestern Bell Wireless aren't fighting to show the 3G map was incorrect, they were concerned with the white parts that were originally filled with the words "no coverage". Which implied, according to ATT's lawsuit, no coverage at all.

Once VZ removed the words "no coverage" from the white areas, they had no legal room to maneuver.

Ahhhhh. The art of advertising. LOL

It really depends on your location... I am located about an hour north of New York City and I don't get 3G until I travel about 30 minutes south.

I have signal in most places I go… pretty much everywhere except my parents' place.
