Someone else posted a thread about accidentally damaging their iPad Pro and they were delightfully surprised that Apple replaced it for free when they brought it in. It's clearly not covered under any Apple offered warranty or plan, but Apple is known for surprising customers with complimentary replacements.

I had a first gen iPad randomly die about 3 years after I had it and they replaced it without me even asking. Very nice of them.

The excess on my insurance is quite expensive, but the accidental damage to my iPad is covered by the policy as I have added electronic item and personal possession protection, but it would be a pretty expensive route to take :(

I've seen other people talk of experiences with Apple Store employees that have turned out with people getting replacements, but judging from how I dropped it I might not be going through the luckiest of times at the moment so I'm not holding my breath haha.

Thanks again to everyone who's commented, offered advice, etc. Really appreciate it! My Genius Bar appointment is tomorrow so I'll update with what happens!

Definitely give it a shot, you never know and it can't hurt to ask. Good luck

My daughter dropped my iPad 3, it just had the Smart Cover . The screen had cracks across it , couldn't really see them when screen was on, but definitely saw them when it was off. It was well past any warranty. I called apple and explained my issue and asked about the cost to replace screen. They put me on hold , and came back and told me to send it in and they replaced it free of charge. I was beyond happy. They even paid both shipping charges!!
Give them a call, you may be surprised .

The verdict from the apple guys was that a repair would not be possible, the Apple Store employee tried to convince his manager to go for the free out of warranty replacement on my behalf but it wasn't meant to be. The store employee even told me "I'm really sorry, I'm not meant to say this but if you took it home and took AppleCare out on it and rebook your appointment well replace it for you". I know some may view this as wrong and I'm not about to do it but the gesture was appreciated and he seemed genuinely sympathetic to my problem.

It's looking like insurance is the way to go, so the moral of the story is if you're going to get AppleCare, just get it. Don't put it off, yeah there are people out there lucky enough to get an out of warranty repair or replacement as a gesture of goodwill but it's better to be safe than have a broken iPad and sorry.

Well at least you know, it is annoying, I would recommend the apple smart case and cover, protects it and makes it a bit less slippery. Or a Khnomo case about £17 on amazon.

Sorry rews, sometimes Apple will replace and sometimes they won't, think it really comes down to a manager decision at the store. Hope that your insurance deductible won't be as much as a replacement IPP, if so then you would be better off not filing a claim and also taking a chance that your rates going up next renewal.

What kind of damage it was? I accidentally dropped mine..

Sorry to hear about your IPP ... I'm surprised they didn't offer an option to "Fix it" or replace it at a smaller cost than a new one... When something isn't repairable, Apple seems to usually offer a replacement cost which is significantly cheaper than buying a new one. :/

They did offer me an out of warranty replacement, for £399. Other than the volume down button it's in perfect working order so it's not a huge deal but it still bugs me. I've got a fair bit of illustration work on at the moment and my ipp has become quite integral in my work flow. Once things calm down a bit ill see about getting a replacement through the insurance.

Ouch... Interested to see what insurance does. Also Some credit cards like chase sapphire offer product replacement in these situations

Pardon the dumb question, is there a apple care and an apple care plus for the ipp? I got Apple care when I bought it I just hope I didn't miss out on the plus part as the accident protection was the reason I bought it

If you purchased the added Apple Care it is the Plus. I'm not sure if they still use the Plus name or not.

Yeah, it's a bit confusing that apple consolidated their extended warranties on iOS, and calling i the older name that did not have accidental coverage. Its a move that is beneficial for us, I'm not complaining but I can see it be a bit confusing.

Can i add AppleCare+ if i bought my iPad Pro from B&H Photo?

Should be able to. I used to add it to my iphone back when ATT didn't offer it and I bought in store. You got 60 days after purchase to add it. As long it is functional, they will add it after they do their diagnostic test. They don't need to see pictures or anything of it.

It is my opinion that since the OP's device still works fine, would pass their diagnostic test, and within 60 days, he or she should add on the apple care and then take it in for replacement.

I purchased one from Costo and added it, but they needed to have me bring it into an Apple Store for inspection in order to add it. But I believe that was to add Plus. I guess they wanted to make sure I wasn't adding it after a drop??

I've added Applecare to a few iPads I bought at Best Buy with just a phone call. My closest Apple store is 2 hours away. Their website has no mention of bringing it in.

Look at the bottom , under important notes. Maybe it changed since last time you did it. But it says you can purchase online or buy calling in. You can also take it in to a store if you so desire.
