I've added Applecare to a few iPads I bought at Best Buy with just a phone call. My closest Apple store is 2 hours away. Their website has no mention of bringing it in.

Look at the bottom , under important notes. Maybe it changed since last time you did it. But it says you can purchase online or buy calling in. You can also take it in to a store if you so desire.
The verdict from the apple guys was that a repair would not be possible, the Apple Store employee tried to convince his manager to go for the free out of warranty replacement on my behalf but it wasn't meant to be. The store employee even told me "I'm really sorry, I'm not meant to say this but if you took it home and took AppleCare out on it and rebook your appointment well replace it for you". I know some may view this as wrong and I'm not about to do it but the gesture was appreciated and he seemed genuinely sympathetic to my problem.
It's looking like insurance is the way to go, so the moral of the story is if you're going to get AppleCare, just get it. Don't put it off, yeah there are people out there lucky enough to get an out of warranty repair or replacement as a gesture of goodwill but it's better to be safe than have a broken iPad and sorry.
Many times the Geeks have advised people to buy AC+ and they will fix it, even after the damage has occurred.
I would, and I don't really care what the "do-gooders" will say about that.
I just called apple to add applecare+ to my 12.9 pro but could not add online. I need to take it into the store.

I'd do the same, Apple is still getting their money one way or another. The internals are fine and will be used in refurbed unit without the cosmetic damage.
I was able to purchase AppleCare+ two days after my purchase from AT&T. All Apple did was remote into my iPad and made sure hardware was working. took maybe five minutes. I have done this with all my iDevices
You can only invoke an Apple care plus repair or replacement if functionality is affected. Some dents or scratches don’t warrant a replacement and they won’t replace it for that. So you’re partially right.Since when does Apple Care cover damage from drops?

Lol Apple Care+ Also doesn’t cover intentional damage....then you just drop it harder then to break it real good

If you wanna spend 50 dollars and waste one of your 2 accidental damage incidents on some dings be my guest haha. On my 9.7 Pro I’ve got a tiny little ding on the bottom corner and a surface scratch in the screen and I’ve considered finishing it off and getting a fresh device but then I realized how petty that would be lol. I think mine is faring much better than other people’s who have had it for 6 months.whoops, accidentally dropped it in toilet while wiping. done

What does it tell you if you try to buy it here?

It does seem like a mixed message from Apple based on what their website says, see notes at bottom of this page.
