For the first time in 10 years of owning an iPhone I feel defensive about owning one. The most expensive phone on the planet should be the best phone too as it has always been. However this time around the competition has significantly caught up and one could easily make the case of the competition surpassing the iPhone X. In almost every aspect the iPhone is behind an Android counter-part

Camera - the Pixel XL beats the iPhone X in most real life use cases - portrait mode, indoor lightinf, low lighting and sharpness. Yes the iPhone X is the only phone capable 4k at 60fps but you would eat up that 256GB fast. The unlimited free storage on Pixel is the added cherry on the cake.

OS - iOS 11 has fast earned the reputation of the buggiest and clunkiest iOS ever. Compare this with the increasing polish and ever improving feature set of Android Oreo - Google Lens, better stock apps, better notification systems, better AR and Google Photos. Having a beast of A11 is of no value of it is hamstrung by a buggy OS

Design - one has to agree the Galaxy S8 is the best designed phone of the year and has been ahead of the iPhone for a few years now.

Assistant - Siri vs Google Assistant - no contest. Google assistant is getting better by the day as more people continue using it

Software innovation - I'll pick Google Lens over Animoji any day. MotionStills and Photos an are a few examples of genuinely useful apps. An average iPhone user is far more dependant on the Google and has at least 5-6 Google apps.

Battery Life - heard instances of far better battery life on the pixel vs the iphone

Payment system - Samsung Pay is a far better and wider accepted payment system globally than Apple Pay and they have been very pro-active in introducing this to countries where Apple Pay isn't present.

Screen - Yes the iPhone X has the best OLED display (made by Samsung) but there are people who prefer the Samsung colour pop and not having the notch is an added bonus.

So in almost every area which matters the iPhone X is second best. Having to pay first class prices for a second class phone makes me defensive. It is no wonder that almost none of the tech publications in the year end flagship smart phone round-up mention the iPhone as the winner.

It won't be long before a single Android phone incorporates all the best features into a single phone for a much lesser price.

Owning an iPhone meant owning the best phone money could buy which sadly isn't true any more.
Hmm, I thought after reading the thread title that you were going to say you felt defensive about spending a ridiculous amount of money on a cellphone. :D

You have some good points. I do like the Samsung s8 design better. I would switch to android, maybe, if it wasn't Google running the show (not a fan of Google's business practices).

My wife went from an s8 to an X and said she could never go back to Android.

oh crap - cry me a river.

Great stories! How about the stories when people coming in with their 6 and 6s to Genius Bar and ask why their phones were slow.....? So instead of telling these customers that a $79.00 battery replacement will fix their issue, the customer are told to upgrade their phone to a new phone...... Let me see, $79.00 or $800.00 fixed mmmmmm?
I would have told you your phone is slow cause it’s old. Either live with it, or get a new phone lol.

I’ve not heard anything bad about Google’s post sales service. However Samsung I’ve heard nothing but bad things about. Not just on the net but my dad had a terrible time with Samsung, getting them to service one of his faulty Samsung phones inside the warranty period.

Good luck with getting Samsung to honour their 2 year warranty. I have bought Samsung phones before but I’d always make sure I had my own insurance should it develop any faults because I have no faith in them honouring their warranty.

You could just copy the music from wherever it’s stored on your computer harddrive to your Samsung phones internal or external memory.

I had the note 8 and it is a great phone. I can’t fault it at all. It was flawless. I only got the iPhone X because I’m more invested in the Apple ecosystem and so the X was a better fit for me.

I tried that. The problem is when you are a classical music lover and have 20 tracks titled "Symphony No. 7" by different composers it would only take one of them. Was so annoying.

Same with the store I go to in Vegas. One time I needed something fast and had no place to park. One of the guys from the Apple Store came out to my car to complete the transaction (email receipt, of course) and hand me my purchase....

Mike

Now THAT’s customer ‘service’ !!

If you think that there's a better phone for you, you should have bought that one.

If the iPhone X is your phone of choice then what do you have to defend, and to whom?

I don't understand why people feel that they need to justify their phone choice or criticize others'. It requires no more justification than your choice of underwear. Go with what you like. Let everyone else do the same. Don't care what others think. End of story.
Amen. Can we just quote this on the main forum page? It would save a ridiculous amount of wasted threads on this same tired topic. Personal preference has no $ value. Love Android? Enjoy! Anyone who feels they have to “defend “ their phone choice needs to get a better perspective of what matters in life. A product is not worth it.

Really? Do tell.
Android fans conveniently forgetting that Apple defined the look and functionality of all smartphones post-2007, including Android. Nothing beats the original; everything else is an imitation.

people don't buy iPhones just because they are the best money can buy. they buy them due to liking what it does and the ecosystem.

sounds to me that you would rather have an android phone.

go get one and stop moaning about what clearly looks like a negative topic. You don't have to have the iPhone X..get what you want to buy.

You should just enjoy what you have...if you don't then get a pixel.

Google is doing what Apple did so well. Make software features with integrated hardware that people will actually use on a day to day basis.
Oh right, my experience with Google Hangouts app when I used it, was horrid. But Google software and user surveillance is the best.

I haven’t read anything besides the title...but who cares what other people think about your phone purchase. If you like it..good. If not, get something else. If someone has an issue with your phone then they have bigger issues and too much time on their hands.
