Just browse FB. So many fake photos. These days you never know what is real and what is fake. I hate photoshop and all the liars out there that manipulate and deceive people with photoshop.

As long as no one claims they are straight out of camera - and remember your canon that takes jpgs is manipulating the image from raw coming off the sensor - then it is their images, their choice. If I want to mangle my images with photoshop or Lightroom, then sorry but they are mine to do exactly that with to whatever degree I want to.

To be clear though, I reckon the vast majority of images you like that have been taken by someone else have been “tweaked” be they from film or digital.

I think what you mean is you dislike over processed and obviously manipulated images. For example, the nasty HDR images for a few years ago - in this case, yes I agree, with great power comes great responsibility. That power to edit should be used sensitively in moderation.

People were photoshopping a century before PhotoShop was invented.

BTW, the potted kitty (<-- see left) is real.
That was faked? I thought it was all genuine!

Answering these threads reminds me of another famous quote....

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Your first problem is Facebook itself. If you don’t know by now, it’s a cesspool of attention-deprived people looking for any kind of validation for their existence. Not all of it is like this, but the bad outweighs the good (in my opinion).

Second, people have been doing this forever. Professional photo restoration, magazine editors, even those half-naked brats on Instagram. You’ll never get rid of it. Best accept it and live with it, or do your best to ignore it.

An interesting comment, given that he wrote books (some of which I have) on how to manipulate photographic negatives and prints to reveal a range of tones in an image that you would not normally be aware of when looking at the original subject.

I have a suspicion that OP is possibly insecure about either his images or his equipment. Many of his threads are painting a picture of an individual who is less interested in photography as a hobby, and rather more interested finding ways to make his work seem superior by dragging others down. Sorry if this sounds like a harsh assessment, but I have to call it the way I see it.

I gather that was the point of this quote. 🙂 I admittedly don’t know enough about him but could see him being maligned in his time. Somewhat similar to the OP’s sentiment.

Yeah but far more do it these days than before.
Well, the answer is very simple, and as such only takes a few seconds of thinking to realize as follows: There are a lot more people taking photos today than there were in the past. In fact, there were very few photographers in the past, since the world populations were not as large as they are today. The more people you have in the world, the more photo-editing taking place.

Nowadays there are millions of people using all kinds of cameras (cellphones, tablets, point & shoot, security, spy, even film cameras), and you don't have to attend an exhibit or museum to look at the photos, since you can see it right here at this forum or all over the Internet, Instagram, and so on. Photo plates, film, and digital photos can all be manipulated. Have you even heard of "dodging and burning"?

The image your camera captures go through a set off steps to render a JPEG or RAW image. So your camera is already sort of "photoshopping" or editing your image. You can set the camera to automatically take B&W, HDR, superimposed (one or more photos over each other), ands so on.

What is real or what is not is not what's most important; the impression on the viewer is. It is the same for painting.

Something I used to help my uncle with when he was developing his own film.

I say help, probably a hinderance but remember some trick with a lollipop stick and a bit of card stuck to it and would wave it over a particular area for an effect.
It is called "dodging" and "burning." One of the most basic of darkroom techniques.

Sometimes I feel like I'm listening to a sports-talk show where the host takes inflammatory stances just to get callers.
Agree. It's sort of crazy, if you ask me :)

More threads than I’ve started in all my years and posts here!

As for the question, we all have our own way of doing things. I mostly use LR. I’ll only use PS about once every thousand images. I try to do the minimum of manipulation. But sometimes you need to tweak things or enhance things. It’s part of the process.

Ah, wondered if that was the connection. Something I never got on with using a mouse but discovering now with the iPad pencil.

He has not started as many pro-Nikon, anti-Leica arguments as you though….
