So I updated a contact on my phone. It did not update on my computer. I check in iTunes and the check box for "sync contacts" is not selected. I try to select it. It tells me that I am syncing with iCloud and that if I check the box I will get duplicate contacts. HOW DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE???? I want the contacts on my computer to match my phone. What am I not getting?

I have 3 degrees and I don't get icloud...

Make sure in settings>iCloud you have contacts switched on, and that the contacts are being synced to it. You can access your contacts on iCloud.com, even if you don't have lion.

I've always thought of my phone as the center of my iUniverse, but at least up until iOS5, Apple has considered my PC (iMac) as the center of my iUniverse. I was never able to accept that proposition, and I'm glad they're at least trying to change it.

good for you. Is it so hard to believe that just because you have not had any problems, doesn't mean there are not problems? First time I tried to sync my phone, before I even enabled iCloud it gave me 120 conflicts in my contacts. Then it asks how to resolve them, without showing what the conflicts actually are. PURE GENIUS. So yeah, 100% no problems.

If I do this then I will not be able to scan from the office scanner because some jackwagon put the proper setting in there, but apparently did not put the code in the background for it to actually work.
ICloud didn't work for me. When I updated my MacBook Air for iCloud it duplicated over 280 contacts. Their merge function has zero smarts. For my needs I start with Outlook being my master source for contacts and iCloud won't work in the way I want it. Apple needs an option to say start with the contacts in the cloud and replace what is on this device or start with the contacts on this device and wipe what is in the cloud. Kinda what Xmarks does with syncing bookmarks.
To the OP, reading some of the posts on here, you must have really stepped on some egos by saying you have 3 degrees.....

iCloud is Apple's answer for Google and it's increasing market share.
Give people free email, free calendars, free photo storage, safe backup, and free texting and they'll be yours for the taking.
Give them superior devices that integrate seemlessly and you'll have them trapped in your ecosystem for life.
Not so much older folk like most of us, but the youngin's. My 10 year old can walk through life PC-free with an iPhone and an iPad and a free iCloud app suite and never need to know that gmail or Google is. Microsoft, Outlook, external USB backup, Netflix too for that matter. That's the Apple endgame here. Be for mobile what Google and Microsoft are for desktop. Less than 7% off all mobile devices are smartphones. Just getting started in this space.

That's what .Mac/MobileMe had. When you synced a new device with it, it gave you the option to: replace all content on MobileMe, replace all content on the device, or merge all content.
I updated a few contacts, and on my Mac, iSync popped up saying there was changes for my approval. I could've declined those changes, which would've meant my Mac was out of sync. The fact that it asked me when iCloud is meant to be the centre source..
I think there's still a lot of stuff Apple needs to sort out with iCloud in terms of syncing, what options it offers its users etc.
True confidence would be exemplified by not feeling the need to crow about having the three degrees in the first place - especially since it seems to be completely irrelevant to the discussion.
iCloud is dumb and pointless, IMO. I like the changes to iOS 5 on my phone and iPad... but it's caused me TONS of problems with syncing and in iTunes, it's barely been worth it. For a company that prides itself on being simple and having things just "work"... this has all been very annoying.

You should notice an iCloud icon in your preferences after 10.7.2
You will notice also is ... Surprise not there before the upgrade
Sorry if I sound cynical but you could easily get away from so many issues by first backing up yor potentially affected data ( external drive)
Then upgrading to 10.7.2
Then the iCloud upgrade

I think there might be some bruised egos. It's all a matter of perspective. I don't believe the OP was bragging about his degrees, per se, he was simply stating that by having the three degrees he is not a complete idiot with a double-digit IQ and has a decent grasp of the English language and still is having difficulty. I didn't see any harm or foul in his post.

Obviously the comment about the degrees was to say "hey, I think I can learn and comprehend things, but this is escaping me." It's a valid thing to say, why so harsh with reactions? I think a minimum age requirement for accounts around here would cut down on 90% of the BS.
Anyway, there really isn't anything "magic" about iCloud. It's Apple playing a bit of catchup in this area and putting their own twist on it, as they usually do. I still find Google contacts to be more versatile, although it does cause one issue with Siri (not learning all relationships).

Well - as I see it you need Lion at the moment to sync with iCloud. That might change in the future as there was a rumor that Apple might add it to SL 10.6.9
That might have less of an effect than you think!
To answer the OP, in order to make sure changes are reflected on your computer, you have to do two things: upgrade to 10.7.2 if you're on a Mac or download the iCloud control panel if you're on a PC.

Not quite. One of the major benefits of iCloud is the one doesn't need a computer anymore at all. Contacts are saved to the cloud without needing Lion or 10.7.2 or a Windows machine.
If you have two iPhones and no computers, you can keep your contacts up to date on both phones without a computer.
