I feel like I'm in the same predicament. I have a Windows desktop, iPad, 17" MBP, and am considering the MBA. I use the iPad for college textbooks, quick internet browsing, and task keeping. My 17" MBP doesn't get a lot of use, except for when I'm working with pictures or am going somewhere I need a powerful mobile computer, such as gaming or working on a project for a while. When I'm home, the desktop gets the most use. But, the MBA could be used for mobile computing, and great for when I am on call for work. I currently use the iPad for on call, but it can be cumbersome to use where the MBA would be a great solution. If only work could buy the MBA :) but for now, my concern is too if a MBA would be overkill. I am a huge tech enthusiast and love having all the latest toys...which is my biggest issue :)

As for bragging, please. I just wanted the opinion of others on this forum who has the same setup as I do.
I didn't think for a moment that you were bragging because I know better than to give credence to allegations made by socially challenged posters.

gwsat above, I believe, has the 17" and says the MBA has replaced his MBP so far.

I love my iPad and it's great to have it with you especially when I'm studying and I have espn score center on my stand while reading. ;)

I got an iPad as a gift and I bought myself the maxed out MacBook Air 13". I love the iPad for using it at my bedside and taking it around classes and the library when I don't need to type any papers. But the air is just as light and portable.

Am I overkilling myself or did I just get the perfect setup for me? I have, what my friend say, the Trinity. iPhone. iPad. MacBook.

Anyone else here with the same situation?

Yes. It's overkill.

How about and iPad and Two Macbook Airs?

I have the original MBA (with hard drive) and an iPad. I had hoped the iPad + Keyboard could replace the MBA on some trips. Didn't work as well as I hoped so now I have an 11" MBA on the way to me (arrives Tuesday).

I will be taking both the iPad and 11" MBA on my trip to Munich on Friday -- the iPad for watching movies/recorded TV, eBook reading and casual surfing (mainly on the flights -- it's a complicated routing designed to maximize miles :) ) and the new MBA for working (programming mostly), blogging, etc.

The status of the (soon to be) old MBA is unclear -- I may give it to She Who Must Be Obeyed or just keep it for those trips where size/weight is not an issue (i.e. I am driving)

If you use it a lot even though you have an MBA don't sell it. That would be stupid.

If it's sitting around collecting dust, then try to sell it Ebay for top dollar.

That way you can always get the new version when it comes out.

Win/win

The MBA has, indeed replaced the 17 inch MBP for all my heavy lifting and everyday tasks but I do still keep the MBP connected to an AC adapter and readily available in the room where I usually work. I still use it fairly regularly to copy CDs to iTunes but was roundly criticized in another thread for not selling the MBP and buying a Superdrive. The busybody who keeps pinging on me about this refuses to hear me when I tell him that it seems more cost effective to me to use the MBP this way and have it available as a backup than would be selling the MBP and having the MBA as my only computer and only being able to copy CDs if I connect a separate CD burner to my MBA.

I'm beginning to think about selling it. Since it was a gift, I could use the extra money towards either the new ipad next year or something else nice. Just a thought.

im probably going to sell my ipad. i realized that the mba is what i can live with. I think in life, we try to make excuses to keep as much clutter as we can. if you have purpose for both items, then thats cool. if one of the items just collects dust, then...you can always get another one later. We don't have to keep it just because its an Apple product. I have needs outside of the apple world that need to be filled like paying bills. selling my ipad for 500 will help my credit cards...especially when i just purchased the macbook air.

tacos or hamburgers....if your belly is big enough...

Keeping the MBP was a good move. SSD are suppose to have better reliability in terms of cycling but I do work in the flash business and sometimes, even I am iffy about using SSD's as your primary storage solution. plus, there are so many things you can do with your MBP from a secondary computer like automate processes, run long and big data files. hook it up to the tv for HDTV setup. I can just have the MBA and let that be your only computer. 2 computers is good to have.

That seemed like the right answer to me. I have to suspect that the guy who kept questioning my judgment was mostly motivated by the politics of envy for my being able to afford keeping a still valuable MBP to use as a secondary computer and backup to the MBA. I guess he'll just have to learn to live with it.:)

I am pretty paranoid about backups and do frequent Time Machine backups to a Time Capsule. Basically, I dislike working without a net. Now, even if I have to have the MBA worked on, I'll be able to use the identically configured MBP while the MBA is at the repair center. I also keep my frequently changing data files, such as my Quicken data, in a Dropbox folder. That way, the Quicken for Windows installation in the MBP's Fusion VM would be able to instantly retrieve the latest Quicken data. In short, I think I should be pretty well covered for most eventualities.

I have a 3 yr old iMac on my desk.

I have an iPhone4 32GB

I have a 11.6"/2GB/128GB MBA (sold my 13" MB late 2008 on ebay)

I'm waiting for iPad2

I guess that makes me a 'fanboy'

If so, it makes both of us "fanboys." I am not a fanboy, though, and doubt whether you are either.

Based on some of the recent posts I have seen, it does seem that some posters have inappropriately accused some of us of being "fanboys" based on no evidence other than that we own a number of pieces of Apple gear. I have never hesitated to criticize Apple when I have disapproved of something they have done. The only reasonable test for fanboyism, it seems to me, is whether one has consistently inappropriately apologized for Apple in his posts, not whether he has several pieces of Apple equipment.
I'm thinking about selling it [the iPad] now since I have a buyer ready. But, a part of me doesn't want to leave it!!!
I can't sell my iPad until a beta test of an iPad app in which I am participating wraps up. After that, I'll just have to wait and see. I may just give it to my son in law.

I have both plus an iPhone. Use the MBA as a road warrior work machine and the iPad for ebooks, browsing, etc. My wife loves having the iPad around to check things and hates to fire up a PC for surfing. So, not overkill for me.

Cheers

I think it really comes down to what you need or what you want...

If someone can't understand why I NEED more than one laptop, an iPad, an iMac and an iPhone, it's not my problem and wouldn't bother me ;)

I have my black MacBook hooked up to my TV for some kind of mediacenter with Plex and an Elgato HD Sat receiver... So I can also stream anything to my iPhone, whether it's music or movies or even live TV.

Then there's a PowerMac at home and an iMacs in my flat in another city where I work. And since two weeks I'm carrying around my MBA 11" :D

So, personally speaking I don't think it's overkill... It's just plain fun (and of course more convenient^^)! And that's what's most important ;)

I WISH I had a father in law like you! Ok, so I'm not a fanboy (phew) I just own a number of pieces of Apple gear. Of course I read MacRumours, TUAW and MacWorld daily, and own 4 bits of kit, but I'm not a fanboy, more of a collector!

True, I do criticise Apple, when necessary. Just how long did it take to let me 'cut & paste'? Don't open the 'Flash' can! That said, I do (regularly) kiss my iPhone 4, and thank it for being so damn sexy...

I hope my doctor is close by...

If you have 13.3 inch MBA, it is no brainer that it is not going to replace your iPad. If you have 11.6 inch MBA, then we have a serious competition.

Not the case for me. Sold my ipad and got a 13" macbook air. The size difference between the 11 and 13 really isn't that big, but somehow it makes a big difference for my eyes to view the larger screen. I also really like the ipad like battery life on the 13.
