I've been seeing these comments since the new Airs came out and I truly don't get it. I would think the majority of us that have iPads also have computers and laptops. (If for no other reason, we have to activate and update the iPad thru iTunes)

The Air is a true computer running full OSX, the iPad is more of a media consumption device. I read on it (it is soooo much better than my old Kindle2), I game - just casual light stuff like Angry Birds and Doodle Jump - and I do a bit of web surfing and minor email. The iPad is great for the casual, look it up on the web quickly kind of stuff while watching TV.

On my Air, however, I do much more intensive things like create and maintain spreadsheets for my business, Remote Desktop into my customer's servers to do maintenance and backups and trouble-shooting. In my free time I like to write stories and novels (one day maybe I'll get published!) and I even play the occasional session of World of Warcraft. Oh yeah, and I like to print things! Yes, I could do those things (not WoW) on the iPad with a lot of hassle but it's not really worth it. There are things that a laptop/computer is good for and things that the iPad is good for. I do a lot of web surfing on both and sometimes you just need a full blown OS-based browser to do it right. Sometimes I do need (gasp!) flash access on web pages also. Lastly, some programs just work better with a mouse/touchpad and a real keyboard.

And after all that... I wouldn't get rid of either device. I love the iPad - especially as an ebook reader) and I LOVE the new 11.6 Air. I see no reason to decide if one is better than the other. Each one has its uses.

I think for some people wanting to get it, it may be overkill and it's just the lust factor driving them to purchase. If you own an iMac, a macbook pro and an iPad, you'd seriously have to question if you really need another computer.

If you just own the Macbook Air and an ipad, then that's not overkill at all, as we all need at least one full OS computer.

I'm in a position where I'm thinking of buying the Air but I know I don't really need it. I have a macbook pro and an iPad, it does the job. Switching to an iMac, macbook air and iPad setup like I've been intending is really just gadget lust for me so I'm holding off for now.

As far as the philosophical reasons for owning both, they each excel at different things so they're not interchangeable. If you want or need both, there's no reason not to. I just think it's worthwhile to think about if you *really* need a Macbook Air if you have a bunch of other devices that do similiar things well enough.
