This is totally me, much to the chagrin of my wife.

Motorola Q Windows Mobile - iPhone - iPhone 3G - iPhone 3GS - Blackberry Curve - Samsung Omnia - iPhone 4 - Blackberry Tour - Blackberry Storm 2 - Motorola Droid - HTC Droid Incredible - iPhone 4 - iPhone 4S - Galaxy Nexus - Galaxy S3 - iPhone 5

The order may not be 100% accurate; too many to recall the exact order.

Part of the reason for the frequent switching was because I had to switch from AT&T to Verizon before Verizon had the iPhone, so I spent some time trying to find a reasonable Verizon alternative. After Verizon got the iPhone 4, I kept the iPhone and got a second phone to play with, mostly because I'm a gadget nerd. Much easier to switch for a day now that VZW's phones also use SIM cards.

Looking at picking up a Razr Maxx HD as my "alt" phone to go along with the iPhone 5.

The best balance to me is an android smartphone for more important and everyday use and an iPad for iOS games and leisure use.

That's the setup I had for quite awhile. However, being on an iPhone after some time with Android phones I have noticed a few things. Facebook and Instagram apps work much better on the iPhone. The Facebook app for Android is just incredibly slow no matter which phone I used, especially when searching for friends. It also crashed too often. Instagram also runs much smoother and faster on iPhone. Not to mention trying to get my Android phones to play nice with my Mac, either uploading or downloading was a pain. I do miss things like a notification light, more variety of options to share things and different keyboards and messengers. Might jailbreak the iPhone.

iPhone resale is high as long as you're selling the current model. I bought an iPhone 4s about 6 months after release and sold it shortly after the iphone 5 was released and lost nearly 50%.
Alternatively if you buy an android phone after release, chances are it'll be quite a bit cheaper than when it was released, and so therefore you will probably lose less when you sell it on later.

Not true about the android thing. Sure if you buy a cheap android phone that no one wants then sure you want get anything for it, but if you get a flagship android like the note 2 then it is just the same as the iphone. I bought the note 2 about a month ago and I can get what a paid for it maybe more right now. It has been out since late last year.

Depends on your area really. I was just looking at Note 2s on Craigslist yesterday before I got the iPhone. The 16GB Notes were selling $500-$550 here in Southern California. They cost $800 retail, so that's already quite a drop. The iPhone 5s were selling $550-$600 for 16GBs that only retail for $650. I only buy flagship Androids and still usually take a hit. iPhones do hold their value better but they are usually much easier to find too.

Not sure where you're getting prices for the Note 2 but they're $650 at AT&T full retail. Something to also take note of, especially here in the US is that many or most of these phones are bought at a subsidized price so we're not paying full retail and can sell these devices for more than that subsidized price. I will agree though that in general iPhones hold they're value much better. I sold my iPhone 4 for $325 (I believe) and this was 8 months after the 4S was released.

So I am note sure we're you got the $800 for retail. I just looked it up most I saw it for was $650 unlocked. About $550 for one of the major carries. I just looked up note 2 in my area of Atlanta and it was $550 to $500. I have an att note 2 that was $550 retail looks like I get about what I paid for it. Also looked at the S3 on CL and it looks like they were $300 all the way up to $400. They is not bad for a year old phone.

I think smartphones are at a point where they're so close to perfect and peakness, it's hard not to nitpick the last few remaining details.

I can't tell you how much farther the S4 would be perceived if it used real metal bands instead of faux and had a capacitive and/or on-screen home button.

Or if the HTC had simply put the home button where it should be (center!) and given us a dedicated menu/app switcher button, and put the power button at a more sensible (ie. reachable) place.

Oops, sorry. The Note 2 is $700 from Verizon.

Well to get back to your OP. I am almost in the same boat as you. Last year I stared with the nexus s then went to the galaxy nexus then to the iphone 5. This year I started with the iphone 5 now have the note 2 and am getting the nexus 4 on Monday. The only difference is I still have the iphone 5 and plan on keeping the note 2 as well.

I used to have one main phone I kept for around a year and one cheaper phone which I'd change every month or so to keep things fun. I'd get the second phone used so I'd get good deals. I hit up eBay often to buy BlackBerries, HTCs, Samsungs, Sonys, everything. If I still had the money to do that I'd do it now because it was great fun using so many different platforms.

I really want one of those BlackBerry R10's for a cheap second phone when it comes out, but right now my priority when I save enough will be to buy a new main phone, which will probably be a Galaxy S3 (S4 has a stupid SIM free price and isn't much better than the S3 anyway).

Without going into great detail, I think it is!

The hardware is a significant advancement but in terms of actual day-to-day use, value for money, and actual new features vs. silly gimmicks you'll never use, it's really... not worth the £600+ asking price :p

I don't know, I do think there are some useful features that I will use, such as the airhover, thermometer, pedometer, ir blaster etc. I guess it's personal preference really but I think it's a worthy upgrade, especially considering the extra ram, as my international is always running low

Seriously, weather widget is the number 1 reason for me widgets are a must.

I also have The Weather Channel on all the time, AccuWeather up, or Living Earth in my status bar on my Mac, so yes, weather is life. :D SkyMotion is pretty good too. Huge weather nuts in this house. Haha.

I have weather ADD.

I actually prefer the discrete way weather bug elite displays weather in the status bar and notification menu.

Do you have windows in your house? And I don't mean Microsoft :D
Because most weather apps I've used are about as much use as looking out of one!

Living Earth has a small icon next to the temperature, which is why I like it. Everyone has their preference though. My dad and I like AccuWeather, my brother prefers TWC. I'm so, so, so exited about Thermodo and it could easily become the only thing I use once it ships.

And now we have derailed this thread.

Ah, Living Earth is Mac/iOS only.

Thermodo is from the guys who made Thermo (that is on the Play Store). It's a device that you plug into your headphone jack to take the temperature where ever you are. It'll work with various apps and devices once it comes out.

I definitely know how the OP and others here feel. I've contracted phone ADD in the last year or so as well. :D

If you're on the desktop site, you can see my signature, which reflects what I've had since my first smart phone (iPhone 3GS). Everything after the Galaxy SII is from last June until now. For those of you that are on the mobile app, here's what I've had...

iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4S
Samsung Galaxy SII
Samsung GSM Galaxy Nexus
HTC One X (twice)
Samsung Galaxy SIII (currently own / daily driver)
Motorola Atrix HD
HTC One X+
iPhone 5 (currently own)
Lumia 920
Galaxy Note II (currently own)

The last phone I bought using an upgrade through AT&T was the iPhone 4S, on release day. Shortly after that, I used my wife's upgrade to get the Galaxy SII for $50 (my first Android phone). Anything after those two have been purchased either at full retail (my current Galaxy SIII) or bought on forums second-hand (including my iPhone 5).

Without a doubt, my favorite of this list has been the S3. My least favorite would probably be a tie between the Atrix HD (great screen, crappy battery life) and the Lumia 920 (WP8 just isn't ready for prime time yet). I did do the RAZR Maxx battery mod on the Atrix HD, and it did give great battery life, but I ended up finding that I just didn't like what Motorola does to Android. Plus, the camera was AWFUL and since I use the camera on my phone on a daily basis at my job, I need a good camera. FWIW, I didn't like the camera on the 920 either. While it did get better after the Portico update, it's still not as good as either the S3, Note 2, or iPhone 5 cameras (no matter what 920 users tell you).

I just recently got the Note II, and while I love it, it's just too big for everyday use (for me...YMMV). And since I like both iOS and Android, I keep my iPhone 5 around and use it every once in a while.

Both platforms are great and have their strengths and weaknesses. If you have the means, I would encourage everyone to try both for a decent amount of time and make an informed decision on which is best for you.

I live in Montreal, looking out the window does not tell me if it's -35 degrees or -10 degrees.

I don't like the size of my Note II but can't let it go because of the battery life. It's just so epic O.O
