Honestly if you keep getting bored with your phone and need to change it every 3 months, it's not the phone that has a problem.

Find a hobby maybe?

And to say that you *only* pay max $200 every time is not an achievement. It's wasteful.

Why can't switching phones be a hobby?

Well he never said his phones had ADD, he said he did :p

It's not your money so why do you care so much? When women pay hundreds for shoes I think they're wasting money big time but it's their money ain't it?

When people have hobbies like photography they spend thousands and thousands on lenses and other stuff, personally I think that's a waste too but it's their hobby and they enjoy it so I hope they continue to do so. In the same way, what OP is doing is an expensive hobby, he's indulging himself in what he likes and he thinks it's money well spent, and really that's all that matters when he's spending his own money.

Of course, he's free to spend on whatever he wants. It's just that he says it as if he's saving a whole lot money doing so when in fact he's not. I just wanted to point that out.

I don't like the size of my Note II but can't let it go because of the battery life. It's just so epic O.O

Oh, the battery life is amazing, no doubt. But yeah, the size is overwhelming. I feel like an idiot whenever I'm holding the thing to my ear...LOL.

That's your opinion, and I respect that. But you're not taking one thing into consideration...

Just because we get a "new" phone doesn't mean we hold on to our old one. After all the phones I've had, I'm still ahead $$$ wise. Why? Because when I buy a new phone from someone, I sell one (or more) of my old ones. For instance, I'll probably grab a S4 when they become readily available (off contract) for $579. Before that, I'll sell my Note 2 (that will probably net me at least $500) and then my S3 (which will probably net me another $350-$400, depending on when I sell it). If I take the low end on the S3 ($350), that will still net me $850. $850-$620 or so (after taxes)=$230 profit. If I REALLY wanted to make some money, I'd sell my iPhone 5 as well for at least $500, bringing my profit to over $700, and I'd have the latest and greatest plus money in my pocket.

While it can be expensive to initially get in the game of changing phones on a regular basis, once you're in you can play for little to no money.

So, what carrier(s) do you use?

AT&T, most likely. I stated this in your other thread, but because they use SIM cards, you can easily switch to whatever phone you like. Just put the SIM in another phone and off you go.

Since US companies like Verizon and Sprint don't use SIM cards, it makes it harder to switch to another phone.

Verizon LTE devices use SIM cards, so it's quite simple to switch back and forth as frequently as you want (provided the device is supported on Verizon's network, of course).

So not as simple still as world-compatible GSM like AT&T, but night and day difference from the pre-LTE CDMA days.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

I do the iPod Touch and Note 2 combo myself. Note 2 is a really good tablet and I find the 5.3 inch size to be quite perfect. Well, that was until I broke the damn screen on the thing and now its out for repair.
I had an iPod Touch and the Note 2 which was cool since the Touch is basically the iPhone 5. I still have the iPad mini for my iOS needs too though.

Even hobbies cost money. $200 every few months is, I would imagine, quite inexpensive as most hobbies go.

My wife's mother does needlepoint, and she can spend $100 or more per project (patterns, fabric, wooden frames for the finished project, etc.). And she does one every few weeks... way more than this MR member spends on phones.

Who cares if he spends $1000 a month on phones? The guy makes his own money like a big boy and can spend it however he wants.

Again, let me make this clear: I don't care and people are free to spend on anything they want, wasteful or not. I was just trying to point out his misconception that he's somehow being cost-efficient doing so.

I blow money on all kinds of crap and I'll call it wasteful as well. I won't say "oh and it only costs this". That's just denial.

How is it not being cost-efficient if you're only spending the money on an upgrade every two years? You spend that $200 then sell your iPhone a year later for twice that amount. Now you're up $200. You buy another phone, let's say the Nexus 4, for $300. You're still up $75 after taxes. You sell that a few months later for $300 (they're still going for higher than what you can get them through the Play Store) and you go buy another phone for $400. Etc, etc, etc.

After all that, you've still broken even. How is that not cost-efficient???

I don't really get how you can break even unless you constantly buy cheaper phones? Either that or someone's buying your old phones for way too much

You obviously have no idea how the used phone market works. People don't pay the subsidized price for a used phone...they pay a discount on the full price. Hence why you can buy a subsidized iPhone with an upgrade for $200 and turn around and sell it a year later for twice that much. You not only get your original $200 back, but $200 on top of that.

People buy off-contract phones in order to avoid contracts. They're willing to pay more to do so.

Maybe things are different in the us then, but surely you're paying more to be on contract compared to sim - only plans?
In the UK there isn't really such thing as a subsidised phone, as in most cases it works out cheaper to buy the phone up front and then just get a sim only plan. (though few people do this)

You do know that the following aren't mutually-exclusive, right?

"People have a right to spend their money they way they please"
"People can spend their money in stupid ways"

Read the OP carefully. But he's not upgrading every 2 years, he's doing it several times in one year. Different situation.

Here in the US, the phone plan is the same whether your on contract or not, so it doesn't matter if you pay full price or get the subsidized phone, your monthly bill is the same. The only way to get a cheaper monthly plan is to go with a smaller pre-paid carrier, and those carriers don't offer a GS3 or iPhone, so if some one wants to use those plans they have to pay full price ($650). So a used iPhone could be sold for around $400, and so if you got your iPhone subsidized you come out ahead $200.

There are subsidised phones in the UK but in reality they're more like loans. You pay nothing for the phone upfront most of the time if you take out a 24 month contract, and that is still a subsidy. It's just that you pay double the real value of the phone along with the cost of your service with that contract you sign.

In the US though they get really royally screwed. SIM only plans are often just as expensive as 24 month contracts, and those contracts are double what we pay. And if you ever feel bad about your phone deal, just remember that Americans actually pay for incoming calls and texts.

Yep, we get rogered but good by the carriers here in the US. In addition to the SIM-only plans being almost as expensive as contracts, T-Mobile is the only carrier that actually lowers the cost of your plan once the phone is "paid off" after 24 months (and they just started that). We're hoping AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint follow suit, but I'm not holding my breath.

In just the last year I have gone from the Galaxy S3 to the iPhone 5 to the Droid DNA to the Note 2 and now back to the iPhone 5. I may end up with the S4 at some point too haha. I really like both Android and iOS. However, I own an iPad mini, iMac, MBA and two Apple TVs. Despite the smaller screen and lack of customization, I might end up keeping the iPhone for awhile as it plays with my Apple products much nicer than my Android phones did. Anyone else do this or am I an uber tech nerd?

Yep. Since December 2010 I have has 7 phones, I have had a N4 since second shipment, and I have a Nexus S in 2011, with also lasted 6 months. (n4 will last atleast 12 months).
