hmmm the extra 32 cores of the 3990 do add lots over the 3970. Cinebench 20 on stock is about 25000
AMD have a huge hill to climb. Another issue with AMD GPU's is the heat, it's just so excessive compared to Nvidia.
Together with performance and heat, AMD is quite far behind.
I hope AMD Navi closes the gap on Nvidia because there needs to be competition.
Assembled workstations are better than any Mac Pro speaking about the raw power. We can assembly dual xeons and 8 Quadros RTX 8000. We can also add led strips, pumps, pipes and smoke machines inside the case.
Mac Pro 7.1 is a different type of workstation. I will never replace it because this is the only hybrid pc officially supported by MacOS and Windows.
Unfortunately this is the last Intel model. Detaching Windows from the Macs will be a bad move.

Agreed, and I felt the same way. Part of my reason for jumping ship is my concern over the new chips not running windows. I figured I'd sell the mac pro while its still worth something.
I hate working in a Windows environment and far prefer working in MacOS, even though I've used Windows for almost 30 years. I bought an iMac Pro a year ago to use as my workstation at home.
And now... I'm going to sell it and am replacing it with a PC build with a 3080. Gotta be honest...iMac Pro and even full Mac Pro are kind of a joke. All the software I use is much MUCH faster on the PC at a fraction of the cost (Blender, Adobe Suite, etc). The number of use cases where the Mac Pro actually makes sense in a real world setting is miniscule.

It's so depressing that the Mac Pro performance is so far behind. That Windows system you just bought is very affordable with insane performance. Apart from running OSX there are just no advantages to staying on the Mac - even if you configure a maxed out Mac Pro it will still be decimated by a Windows box. The Mac is still a terrible option for professionals, nearly a year after launch and the promised GPU renderers are still not public, and reading the OTOY forum it sounds like Octane is a way off being stable - same old same old Octane then.
I've honestly thought about changing career because of the state of the Mac now.
120 Celsius? I thought 100 was the upper limit of chips and they would power down over that level.
When Andrey Kozlov leaved Otoy, I decided to use his renderer, then I moved from Octane for Max to Fstorm. It works like a charm also on super heavy scenes, it's fast, super stable. I own several gpu workstations but the last one was based on a Mac Pro because assembled pcs are bulky and heavy. Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Puget, Bizon, Boxx, Digital Storm, can't design a Mac Pro. Their pcs have tons of running cables, poor finishes, less pci slots, no tb3, no dual os. Architects and designers want a masterpiece on their desktops.
I made my Mac Pro much powerful than my "old" gpu workstations installing 2 RTX2080Tis + 1 external GTX1080Ti. Let's imagine a Mac Pro running Resolve or Cycles with dual Quadros RTX A6000 announced today. 48GB, 10752 cuda cores, 300W each. They fit perfectlly.
Today all computing tasks run on gpus. Let's see what AMD is going to release for the Macs next month.

I hope so too, because as far as PCIE slots go I have a motherboard with an Epyc cpu on it .. and it has SEVEN full PCIE x16 V4 slots on it. and up to 11 with a daughter card. I have 12 TB3 ports on it using a couple of those slots. ( they need to make a PCIE4 version of the card and then I can do it in 1 )

In setting up this pc build to be exactly what I need, I do understand the appeal of the Mac. Troubleshooting has been hard, and Having something that just works with a phone number to call when it doesn’t is worth a lot. My small business has spent nearly $200k at the apple store in the last 5 years because of this.
I just can’t justify the performance over cost. I spent nearly $30,000 on a Mac 6 months ago that is less than 1/4 the performance of a computer I buil for $8000 this month. I’m still keeping my iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and a Mac mini, so apple still has me in their ecosystem, but for real creative work, I need to use a pc, even if the cost of the pc was the same. Mac, at any price can’t keep up.
I wouldn’t have considered the switch if apple supported nvidia.

The cost isn't even the important part, it's that the Mac Pro can't get anywhere near the performance of a PC build, period. The slow Xeon CPUs, miserable single core performance and lack of Nvidia are just hammer blows to this system. No one seriously using Adobe CC or C4D wanted these specs.
