Reading your thread, I can't help but picture a low-paid Best Buy employee that would really be stretching his budget to spend $500+ on an iPad. My guess, not having the extra $$$ is just as much of a factor in your "disappointment" as anything else.

Just sayin'.

Mark

He's not a BB employee.

Hrmmm.......I know this will sound like sheer geek-dom/fanboy madness, but a few weeks back, I made a crude cardboard mock-up of the thing (actual dimensions - 7.47" x 9.56" with paper screen laid on top) to get an idea, ergonomically, what this would feel like while holding. Albeit, not the real deal, I'm convinced the best way to dispatch quick emails and instant messages on iPad (sitting or standing) will be in portrait view using your thumbs to type. I have my doubts about landscape orientation for typing - unless seated as in the guided tours or on a hard surface. We'll know for sure in a matter of hours.

Everything that i've read says that thumb typing is impossible unless you have giant hands. It gets tiresome very quickly

So you were trying to type on it at like 25 degree angle for 45 minutes?

No offense, but your review seems lacking since that is your only complaint, and what you were doing is weird and not how anyone would likely be trying to type on it.

no offense taken. I immidiatly went to videos. Its preloaded with an edited version of Stepbrothers (CLEAN) 00:58 clip of the bunkbed scene. They had a a couple of music video's - I watched that annoying Firefly song by the band that kid who wishes he was in Postal Service - the video looked amazing - the volume is ok but obvisouly people will use earbuds.

I played a preloaded game of madden - this was fun - graphics look good but a little inflated. I dont know if this app was a iPad dedicated app or a blown up iPhone app.

I played the preloaded basketball game - same as above.

There is an app called 100 pushups that I played with. It gives you a goal to be able to complete and work toward the 100 mark. It has a form video clip on proper technique. This was just ok.

umm....pages, keynote and numbers was preloaded also. I only opened pages. Pages looks ok but the typing issue started to bother.

I didnt see iBook loaded and couldnt connect to the internet to do so. The wifi is locked at Bestbuy.

You're basing this on way too many assumptions.

Is there a reason people feel the need to attack a person for stating their opinion after using a product you obviously have not yet even seen in person?

Wow, are you serious? I do not make 100,000+ a year and I'd hardly call the bestbuy get-up a uniform.

I didn't realize the "snob" attitude was in full force

I've got to say that I was really, really hyped for the iPhone. I spent a good hour playing with it, and decided not to buy it right now. But then I thought about demonstrating it is different than owning. When you're using it a few hours a day you're constantly using that same impressive demo that you originally played with. I ended buying the first-generation two weeks after launch.

I'm pretty convinced the OP has an iphone, hence the reason he things the iphone is easier to type on. The iphone has a mediocre soft keyboard at best compared to some other smartphones, but if you use a soft keyboard everyday, you quickly adapt, including a device like the ipad.

Sounds a little bitchy and petty - maybe need to go home to mom.

Whats his job got anything to do with it - snob.

Just sayin'

Hmm I hope the store here has 32gb. I'm not sure what I'd get if they only had 16gb and 64gb. 16gb is too small (especially with periodic table already taking up 2gb), but 64gb costs an extra $200 and seems like more space than I'd need. (after using my iPhone for a year I'm using about 24gb of the 32gb on it).

It sounds like the iPad was positioned in portrait mode in one of the Apple docks...is that how it was?

If it is...then it does sound very uncomfortable to type on.

I think the only way to comfortable type on it is to use the case and have it almost flat on the desk or to prop it against your thighs when laying on a bed or your legs are propped up on the couch...and in landscape mode.

Thanks for the early review...

When mine shows up tomorrow... later today! I am very interested to see how long the adjustment will be for typing.

It took me about a week to get really comfortable with the iphone, so I figure there will be time on the iPad as well.

But just in case, I got one of the Apple BT keyboards if I need to.

Once again, thanks. I think any of the dissing being directed towards you has more to do with our impatience to see/own one than your actual mini review.

If I can get it to type at least as fast as the peak 35-40 WPM I can get on my iPhone then I'll be happy. I bet I can beat that. Its still faster than taking notes by hand in class.

I'm more in it for the web, games, and drawing. Typing just has to be doable. I'm thinking about picking up a bluetooth keyboard at the Apple store with my purchase tomorrow. Can anyone suggest a cheaper bluetooth kb that is any good?

Do you guys think I will be able to type faster then typing on my netbook whose spacebar doesn't work, therefore I have to CTRL+V a space whenever I type? :D If I can, then it's a winner! :D:p

Andy Ihnatko on Gadgets & Games did a typing demo and was able to bust out words pretty fast for a virtual keyboard. I don't dismiss the OP had a difficult time typing, but just the same it very well is likely the case that it was just OP having a difficult time typing. Some people type fast, some slow. Some people like the feel of keyboard A, some keyboard B.

Regardless the iPad is primarily a consumption device. I think too many people have unrealistic expectations that its a laptop replacement. It is not.

Yall fall for anything guy has no proof of what he is saying. Who has 45 min to play with ipad on a job.

Im a "hunt n picker" anyway, so a keyboard has NEVER been on my priority list.

6 words per minute is cruisin' for me! - OK that may be a stretch..
