I was getting a lot of flack from folks saying that given my usage (Netflix, YouTube, MS Office, and general browsing), MacBook Pro 16 M1 Pro with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB SSD is an overkill.

Well, to those folks, I say I ordered it because I can. LOL.

In all seriousness, I acknowledge that a MacBook Air is probably sufficient for my needs but I want/need the 16" size. Having more screen real estate is absolutely important to me, and the $3K price is not that much considering that I'll keep this laptop for at least 5 years if not longer. So per-year cost drops significantly.

The point is: if someone wants to buy the MacBook Pro M1 Pro or even the M1 Max, if they can afford it then why the heck not?

Who cares if I will never use the power. I just want the ports back, I'm going to enjoy the amazing display, will definitely enjoy the new speakers, and looking forward to testing out the real-world battery life.

This will be a significant upgrade from my MacBook Pro 16 2019 model with the crappy Intel i9 processor that turns on the fan when I'm doing basic stuff. So looking forward to the M1 Pro.

Anyone else in the same situation as me?

Whether it's humblebragging, buyers validation, or simply just doing it because they can, I think the majority of people will agree that at the end of the day it's your money. You should feel free to do as you please :)

I for one, hope you enjoy your upgrade! I'm looking forward to an M1 Pro myself :)

good for you! That’s exciting. I more or less did the same (I don’t need pro performance for the daily tasks I do, but I did want it spec’d to allow me to keep the machine a very long time). It’s also my primary machine (well it will be; I’m giving my 2012 mac desktop to my kids. I futureproofed that one pretty well too and it’s still chugging along for basic tasks.

For some reason this raises people’s hackles; I have no idea why. It’s this strange “you don’t deserve this tech” phenomenon that exists. Same for cameras. “Pros” get their knickers in a twist when someone who is a passionate amateur buys a canon mark iv. I’ve never understood it.

I have an Air and it's just a mediocre laptop in spite of it being an Apple. I use these a LOT so I want a nice one, so i'm unloading the air and getting one of these. Considering how much I use these things.....

Easy.

Also, there are great Windows laptops now with Intel 11gen/ Win11.

Good! Now enjoy your machine! You don’t owe any justification to nobody. It’s your money and if you can spend it, and want such a machine, do it.

Nowadays a lot of kids are driving Tesla’s while they could also drive a Fiat Punto. Nothing is wrong with either. Don’t think about ‘overkill’ or ‘do I need such a machine?’ If you want it and can afford it, go ahead.

I’m happy finally someone gets it.

Yup, no worries. It's overkill for me, too. Some people drive a BMW to work and some people use MacBook Pros for surfing the web and watching videos. All good.

This guy did a great video on the topic:

Awesome video! Thanks for sharing.

Loved that he talked about all the things that I was thinking about.

Thank you so much!

The promotion display alone is worth the upgrade... I can't wait to get my hands on it.

I ordered the same MacBook Pro today. My workload on my Macbook Pro is pretty light, but I wanted to get 32gb but it was a big jump in price. Then I was only a couple hundred from the M1 Max. Apple was sucking me in to buy more than I needed. I currently using a 13 Macbook Pro M1 16GB/1TB and it works great for me but I want a bigger screen. I originally bought the 13 Macbook Pro because my 15 MacBook Pro was dying. I thought the smaller screen would be alright since I plug in an external monitor, but it wasn't.

Yes but the cost is substantial. I'm sure there are lots of folks struggling with this. It will pass :D
Of course the cost is substantial, but I’m assuming I’m talking to a responsible adult here and not some entitled brat living from paycheck to paycheck. Doesn’t change the fact that it’s his money and he can spend it any way he wants to, whether it’s on a new laptop that’s overpowered for his needs, or on hookers and blow.

Yes. So you're saying we should man-up to it. Go broke like a MAN, instead of some whining millennial type. Preferably with hookers and blow.

No, I’m saying that I’m assuming the OP is making an educated, informed purchasing decision. And part of that process includes determining that this purchase of what is essentially a frivolous luxury item isn’t going to bankrupt him.

Well, obviously he is sort of is, as he wouldn't be posting these pre-buyers remorse threads that scream overextended.

These ain't cheap.

Where did you get the implication that the OP is overextending himself? He’s already said he’s ordered his MBP “because he can” and “if you can afford it why not?” Nowhere does he say he’s maxing out a credit card, skipping a rent payment, or eating ramen for the next 3 months.

I buy luxury sports cars because I enjoy them and can afford to do so, despite the fact that I rarely participate in races or track days. Doesn’t mean I’m overextending myself.

I agree with the OP. I’m trading in a 2018 MBA 8/512 for a MBP 14”-16/1TB and getting the wife the MBP base model. She has a 2018 Air 8/128. Also trading it.

She surfs the web, plays games on FB and shops continuously online. We could both wait for the upcoming Air, but these Pros have everything I want, and like the OP, we can afford it. Plus, with the trade-in and Apple Card cash back, the price comes down $1000.

What a bargain.

I'm seriously tempted to upgrade and posts like this don't help, lol. I'm currently on a 2019 refurb but the extra screen real estate would be nice, not to mention I wouldn't mind getting back a computer that has the various ports built in, etc. The laptop I had before this one I kept for six years, but upgrading after two years might be ok if I keep the new one for that long again... We'll see, lol.

First of all, I don't think you are being totally honest here. People don't tap random people on the shoulder and say "that's too much for your needs." What they do is tell you their opinion when asked a question. So if you asked the question, you get an answer. Maybe it's not the answer you wanted, maybe it is.

Whenever a new product is announced, the forums are flooded with "Should I or shouldn't I?" questions et al. Not everyone looking to buy actually needs the thing. It's just a warm fuzzy to fill some void in actuality. Sort of like how quitting one's job on a whim seems absurd to some but brave and "authentic" to others. It's always a matter of perspective.

Some people just need a warm fuzzy... others are looking for someone to do a reality check for them. Still others choose to do it out of defiance... take that Apple! To each their own.

If you ask a question... don't be surprised if you get an answer.
