I was getting a lot of flack from folks saying that given my usage (Netflix, YouTube, MS Office, and general browsing), MacBook Pro 16 M1 Pro with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB SSD is an overkill.

Well, to those folks, I say I ordered it because I can. LOL.

In all seriousness, I acknowledge that a MacBook Air is probably sufficient for my needs but I want/need the 16" size. Having more screen real estate is absolutely important to me, and the $3K price is not that much considering that I'll keep this laptop for at least 5 years if not longer. So per-year cost drops significantly.

The point is: if someone wants to buy the MacBook Pro M1 Pro or even the M1 Max, if they can afford it then why the heck not?

Who cares if I will never use the power. I just want the ports back, I'm going to enjoy the amazing display, will definitely enjoy the new speakers, and looking forward to testing out the real-world battery life.

This will be a significant upgrade from my MacBook Pro 16 2019 model with the crappy Intel i9 processor that turns on the fan when I'm doing basic stuff. So looking forward to the M1 Pro.

Anyone else in the same situation as me?
Most of these people are macaddicts and likely don’t even need to upgrade any of their Apple products. Apple products function perfectly well for almost every task for years (at least 5-10 years). How many people really are in such a time crunch that they need a few seconds or even minutes off video exports?

I'm seriously tempted to upgrade and posts like this don't help, lol. I'm currently on a 2019 refurb but the extra screen real estate would be nice, not to mention I wouldn't mind getting back a computer that has the various ports built in, etc. The laptop I had before this one I kept for six years, but upgrading after two years might be ok if I keep the new one for that long again... We'll see, lol.

Seriously, if you can stomach the extra $$ then go for it.

I'm in the same boat as you: purchased the 2019 MacBook Pro i9 and am not very happy with it. I initially purchased it as I thought I'll keep it for 5 years but with the crappy battery life and the constant heat/fan noise, I am unimpressed by it.

I am champing at the bit to see some YouTube videos where they show the fan curve/noise. I like a quiet machine above all else. It's just how I roll.

Lol! This is my situation exactly. I was upgrading every two years, and then I bought the 2019 16” i9 with the intention of keeping it 4-5 years, but I’m not happy with it for same reasons as you, terrible battery life and the constant heat and fan noise, especially when using the 5500M. The new M1 is VERY enticing. I want one.

Hahah... happy to see there are others who are in the same boat as me.

I lost around $1,300 over 2 years once you factor in the resale value. That was a bitter pill to swallow but I am telling myself that the new one will last me 5+ years and I do intend to keep that one for at least that long, if not longer. This helps me "justify" the price a tad bit as we all know that money was indeed the only factor that was initially making me not upgrade.

I realized tonight that part of it is that this year's computer is the one I wanted in 2019! Except with a better screen and a hell of a lot faster, lol.

So I'm going to think on it a bit more, but it occurred to me that waiting doesn't exactly put me any further ahead, when the resell value or trade in value of my current one will only go down next year. We'll see.

I will lose about $2000 over two years from my 2019 i9...ouch.

Keep reminding folks, John Ternus, if you just want the best notebook in the world, even if you are not doing 3D rendering, video, photo editing or STEM. If I didn’t purchase last years MBP M1, I likely would have splurged on the M1 Max 1TB, 32 GB model even though I have no use for it.

Same here 😄 coming from a 16“ (late 2019) too. But I ordered the 14‘‘ version. I want the ports back, speakers from the larger version in a smaller form factor, 120 hz display with hdr and more pixels. Will use the power every once in a while, but I dont care. It is worth to me. The new MBP already feels like a bigger leap than 2 years ago when I went from the 2012 version to 2019.

That's well said. This year's MBP is indeed a much larger leap than it was from 2012 to 2019. In fact, in many ways the 2019 was a step backward as we lost ports, magsafe, etc.

I honestly feel my old rMBP 13" i5 (late 2013) is as fast as my MBP 16" i9 (2019).

Congrats on your purchase. I'm in exactly the same situation. I got the 16 inch MBP M1 Pro w 16gigs of ram and 1Tb ssd. Mainly cause 13 inches is too small for me. It's my main computer, and I like having a larger screen. The only game I play is KSP, and hopefully KSP2 will support the Mac as well.

I am, however, upgrading from a late 2013 16 inch MBP. The battery is shot to hell, and the SSD failed once already. So it'll be a huge leap.

I don't do video or photo editing either, mostly I just surf the web, watch some youtube/movies, check mail....but tbh I've had my mbp for 7+ years now, battery life is dying in under 2 hours, apps freeze from time to time, watching youtube videos in 4k makes the fan start and the laptop heat up, thats why I went ahead and ordered the new 16" mbp....not to mention apple gives me $480 to trade it in toward a new one, trade in value + student discount and 12 mo financing I'm @ $150 a month for 12 mo, worth the upgrade in my eyes and I'm prolly gonna keep the new one for another 5+ yrs.

Did you, um, not read any of the posts? LOL.
Didn't mean any disrespect, quite the opposite in fact. We slave away every day at work (most of us) and have only one life to live. If you want to buy something, just because - then damn well do it! No justification or discussion needed.

What's odd to me about the "it's too much power" argument is that it assumes every computer is used to its full capabilities all the time. This is generally not true, and having that extra headroom means as your computing usage habits change, your computer is ready to handle those habit changes. In the same way that most cars can go over 110mph, but most people don't drive that fast, yet, it's good to be able to go that fast if you ever need to.

Same. Extrapolating from those who used the 2020 M1 MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM & the M1 Pro 8-core/14-core GPU, the 14" base model will more than likely be a bit faster than the base model 2019 16" MacBook Pro.

*PLUS* you gain the 120Hz ProMotion, brighter display & peak brightness, improved speaker system, Thunderbolt 4 ports, faster memory, faster solid state storage, HDMI port, SD Card reader with UHS-II support, MagSafe, better battery life, 1080p webcam & better in lower light situations, probably a significant reduction in heat output from the 2019 16" MacBook Pro doing even menial tasks vs. the Intel 16", no more TouchBar, 802.11ax Wifi 6. What am I missing?!

So if you can afford to get it, even though you might not absolutely need it, then WHY the hells not go for it?!?!

Well, I ended up pulling the trigger. 14"/16GB/1TB. I usually prefer to do things upfront but for this I put it on an installment plan. Less of a sting in the wallet that way, lol, and I figure why give Apple my money upfront if I can spread it out, anyway.

My delivery date is showing Nov 29th to Dec 7th, but that's okay - gives me time to look at the reviews! :D

NGL, I'm kind of excited. Bigger and better screen! Ports! Better keyboard! This is the computer I was hankering for in 2019.

I posted something similar and then deleted thread. Im pretty much in the same situation as you. Not a pro creator, work in medicine. I would use this machine for “everyday use” with some *maybe* minor photo editing in the apple photos app, for shots from my iPhone 13 pro.

I went with the 14” with the 10 core and left everything else basic (ram and hdd), Im looking forward to the brighter display and the promotion. Im getting older and I find that lower displays with the standard brightness seem too dim, I always have the brightness at like 90%. Hopefully this will be fun to use.

I ordered the same MacBook Pro today. My workload on my Macbook Pro is pretty light, but I wanted to get 32gb but it was a big jump in price. Then I was only a couple hundred from the M1 Max. Apple was sucking me in to buy more than I needed. I currently using a 13 Macbook Pro M1 16GB/1TB and it works great for me but I want a bigger screen. I originally bought the 13 Macbook Pro because my 15 MacBook Pro was dying. I thought the smaller screen would be alright since I plug in an external monitor, but it wasn't.
could you explain what is your use case ,and why a 13-14" isn't enough given you have multiple monitors ?(nay just one monitor )

For me, I wanted to simplify my desk with a cleaner look. So I don't use a monitor except for my 12" iPad and that is why I went with the 16 Macbook Pro M1, which has worked great for my needs. I mostly surf the internet, play some music, and edit photos.
