I was getting a lot of flack from folks saying that given my usage (Netflix, YouTube, MS Office, and general browsing), MacBook Pro 16 M1 Pro with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB SSD is an overkill.
Well, to those folks, I say I ordered it because I can. LOL.
Apple doesn't give you the option to get a 16" laptop that isn't the 16" MacBook Pro. That being said, based on the configuration options, with the exception of the SSD, you got yourself the bottom of the line 16" MacBook Pro, which, if you want a 16" MacBook Pro, is fine.
In all seriousness, I acknowledge that a MacBook Air is probably sufficient for my needs but I want/need the 16" size. Having more screen real estate is absolutely important to me, and the $3K price is not that much considering that I'll keep this laptop for at least 5 years if not longer. So per-year cost drops significantly.
I think this is the real argument. The whole "because I can" seems needlessly braggadocios.
The point is: if someone wants to buy the MacBook Pro M1 Pro or even the M1 Max, if they can afford it then why the heck not?
We live in a capitalist society where if you have money, you can spend the money and anyone and everyone else be damned. However, given the economic inequality prevalent in society, the whole "I'm splurging when I really don't need to" is a bad look, especially since I'm sure there are those who would kill even for the 13" M1 MacBook Pro and push it way harder than you'll ever push your 16". I know I've been there before. But, really, at the end of the day, you do you, y'know?
Who cares if I will never use the power. I just want the ports back, I'm going to enjoy the amazing display, will definitely enjoy the new speakers, and looking forward to testing out the real-world battery life.
Honestly, I think the answer is that YOU care. I only care about people buying more Mac than they need to when I'm on the hook for either deploying (in the case of my IT career) or recommending (in the case of my Mac consulting side hustle) a Mac for a given user. Past that, my only response to a post like this is "good for you?"
This will be a significant upgrade from my MacBook Pro 16 2019 model with the crappy Intel i9 processor that turns on the fan when I'm doing basic stuff.
For your uses, I'm honestly surprised that you'd find either of the two Core i9 options on the 2019 16" MacBook Pros crappy. The 2019 16" MacBook Pro is an Intel Mac and an Intel MacBook Pro through and through, so fans and heat are totally going to be a thing when you're running things on it. But "crappy"? For Netflix, YouTube, Office, and basic browsing??? There might be a bit of M1-Koolaid being consumed here. I'm not saying that Apple Silicon isn't obviously more power efficient than Intel. But welcome to ARM vs. x86; it's ALWAYS been that way (the only difference is that ARM has caught up to the performance of x86 and Apple's implementation has surpassed it).
So looking forward to the M1 Pro.
Anyone else in the same situation as me?
Bragging about tech you claim to not need? Oh this site is guaranteed to be chalk full of them. That said, I think you ironically justified your own use case, despite presenting it under the premise of it not existing. You wanted a 16" Mac with ports. I'm not sure what you need a 1TB SSD for, but I won't presume that there isn't a reason for getting one. Otherwise, you spec'ed out the lowest end Mac Apple currently makes that meets those requirements.
