And it's not the max, haha. I'm starting to think I'm nuts. How much did everyone else spend? The one consolation is I'll be able to sell my iPhone 7 for at least $400.

I got the Xs with 512GB, leather case and AppleCare with theft protection. Plus tax.
Just be aware that the more costly AppleCare + with loss/theft will go through a 3rd party insurance company called Assurant for a replacement

Truth be told, I have no remorse for spending nearly $1800. As has been mentioned, the iPhone is a computer, not a phone. Do people still make phone calls? ;) I also plan to change the frequency that I upgrade. Ever since I started with the iPhone 3g, it's been every 2 years. I'm going to hang on to the Xs for 3 years. The only thing I second guess myself on is AppleCare with theft and loss. With my iPhone 7, I might have called twice for support. And I've gotten out of the habit of losing phones ;).

My thought is since I'm paying a premium for a phone I will be extra careful with it, therefore not needing any AppleCare. It's worked wonders since 2007.

I got the X last year, and wish I would have waited for the Max. So now I spent $1500 on the max, and will be selling the X to recoup some of my impatience. Will definitely be keeping the max for a few years. I think next year I will get a new watch.

and now you'll spend many of your precious life hours being distracted with it scrolling through random irrelevant content ;)

If you are within the 14 days (pretty sure you are) you can ‘return’ the AC you gut and get the basic one. They cannot stop you as you can basically return the phone and do-over.

You can also cancel this in insurance at any time and get pro-rated value back... so they will likely ‘exchange’ AC coverage for you.

I don’t believe in buying warranties for things that I can afford two have fixed. For me, AC+ is an exception. You get amazing service (trust me.. I have pushed the limits) and I could afford to ‘replace’ my iPhone but I am wiling to buy AC+ in this case.

My total was $1525 with AppleCare + (no theft coverage), not including the 2 Apple leather cases and Belkin Invisiglass protector. That is a lot of date money. Hopefully, I will meet the right Apple girl and she will gladly understand. :)

OP, can you share why you needed 512 instead of 256?

I have 1TB of music files. With my iPhone 7 128gb and before, I would rotate music files every 2 weeks or so. I think 512GB will satisfy my needs so I don't have to keep rotating. I "only" want about half my library or less on my phone. The biggest use of my phone is for listening to music.

if it's your primary digital device, it's not crazy at all. it makes total sense. if you also have a macbook pro or something in your bag, and own a dslr or whatever, it's a complete waste of cash

About £3800 or about $5k
Two iPhone Xc max 512gb
Gold Apple Watch
Gold Milanese loop
A couple of iPhone X cases.

Funny thing is that’s not the most I have spent at the Apple store.

I sold my iPad 2018 and Apple Pencil. I just wasn't using it as much as I thought I would. That and I spend a lot of time on my phone watching Youtube, listening to podcasts, I even hook up a bluetooth keyboard to it and use it for note taking, journaling, thinking, etc... It's becoming a primary computer even though I have a MBP and I spend all day programming on a Windows machine. My brother gladly purchased my iPad yesterday because he's been needing one for awhile. That helped.

I opted for the Theft and Loss AppleCare+ because it only added a few $/mo more. So mine was $1800+. Payment goes from $46/mo to $72/mo (x2 because wife got a 512GB MAX as well). Tax and first month were around $180 each, so the iPad covered both of those.

For something as important as my iPhone, I can justify the price. If I couldn't have, I would have happily kept our 8+ phones (we almost did).

That said, the cost of these phones? I do expect 2-4 years of use out of them. We already planned this with the 8+.

Because y'all would definitely be using all 512GB of space on them. Even with over 50 "large" gaming apps, 50,000 photos, 10,000 songs, numerous videos, you won't even be at 256GB. I don't understand why people are opting for an expensive 512GB, it's not future proofing because you will never reach that space even years from now. Very very few use cases call for it.

This is a handheld computer. It does so much of what a big rig can do in such a small size. And dedicated computers usually can’t do cellular calls or gps.

If by "so much" you mean surfing the web well.. sure... but sorry, there isn't an iPhone on the market that can do the intense gaming I do on my PC... not to mention the video/photo editing I do with Premiere Pro and Photoshop/Lightroom.

Good try though.

And there’s dozens of things it will do. It can’t and won’t replace my primary computer functions either.

Your post avoids the main point that it’s a computing device. If you simply want a phone no need for a smartphone.

It’s like calling a car a “satnav” because that’s one function it can perform.

Sure it's a computing device. Still doesn't change the fact if you are looking for something to compute with (I'm talking about basic web browsing, email, etc) you are far better off buying any number of Windows laptops on the market for $399, $499, $599... etc... that will do everything the phone does and more... on a much bigger screen with a keyboard!

^ That is true. I was dispelling the notion that’s it’s just a phone. If you brought one of these to one of the nerdy computer gatherings that Jobs and Woz attended in the early days those guys would have said it’s the greatest computer that would ever be invented.

In my opinion, the price has gone up ridiculously. But no one is twisting my arm to buy a new phone. What’s really nice is that my 6S Plus is a perfectly working phone and it’s a matter of choice for me to get the new XS Max. So I’ll not complain.

Very true but not at the tip of your fingers everywhere you go.

You didn't spend $1800 on the phone.
You spent $1349, plus tax, and then $300 for the AppleCare extended coverage warranty.

Yeah...I kinda felt a bit guilty for buying the 256 GB iPhone X, but you know what... I'm glad I did. It's nice not having to worry about storage, and even nicer to have an iPhone that is such a pleasure to use. Back in the iPhone 5 days, and earlier, it was just a smartphone. For a few years now my iPhone has been the center of my digital universe. It's the hub for my Apple Watch, integrates seamlessly with the iPad I use for work and my iPad at home, thanks to iCloud. I can access all my work stuff thanks to Office 365 apps. I almost don't need a home computer anymore. I still have one, but I built it for a few hundred bucks a couple of years ago, and it should be good for many more years. I don't use a laptop anymore.

Years ago I spent significantly more money to keep my home desktop and laptop reasonably up to date. Since I have always built my own desktops I have been able to keep those costs down, but in the past I used to spend much more on parts since I used it for gaming. Now my needs are more modest at home, and I sometimes wonder if I still need a desktop computer at all. I could get by with just an Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad... but I like using the larger desktop display for Photoshop and Lightroom. Overall I'd say iOS/watchOS is my primary digital ecosystem for both home and work, even though I do use Windows on my primary desktop computer at work. The iPhone is the hub of that ecosystem, and the Apple Watch and iPad are accessory devices. So that's probably $2,000+ worth of iOS/watchOS devices. I tend to upgrade on a 3 year cycle... sometimes 2 years when I can afford it. For less than a cup of coffee a day... :p

Now go shoot some 4K video so you can be glad you purchased the dang 512 GB!

I'm glad you wrote this because I was contemplating the same, so now, I can just agree. :)

It's too bad that "phone" is the moniker that we use for these devices because their capabilities are truly amazing. When the Razr was introduced, it was $500 on a carrier plan. My tech money goes to my pocket computer/communicator/internet, radio, news, music, video, photo memories/calculator/finance-payment manager/e-book reader/calendar/fitness tracker/GPS maps/HD video camera, that also makes the occasional phone call, now: I find that I use my iMac for very little except for photograph adjustments and preparing my tax return, and I refrain from upgrading laptop and desktop computers. If I paid $1500 for a push button two-line phone, I'd be upset, but this seems like a steal. :)

2019’s iPhones will have some big changes, and I am willing to bet most here will want to upgrade again lol.

Sure, just like the iPhone 7 offered "big changes" over the iPhone 6s.

Personally, I preordered the the iPhone xs max.

Judging by the iPhone 6/6s/7 and the Apple watches series 0/2/3, Apple is in a three year cycle. I expect a new design/chassis for the iPhone to debut in 2020 and a new Apple Watch design in 2021.
