7-8 of these phones = a brand new car in some cases

I don't own a car, and I don't want one :)

Actually my wife does have a car that I sometimes use, but we are currently just a one-car family. Before that we were totally car-free for about 10 years, but that was easier when we lived in a city with good public transportation.

So after living for a decade without any car expenses, it was quite a shock to be reminded of how expensive a car is to own and drive. It's too bad we have made it a necessity throughout most of the U.S. Once you've paid off the car it's getting to that age when the next trip to the shop could cost you as much as an iPhone. At least most people tend to keep a car 10 years or more (unless they trade it in).

Anyway... we all have our own ideas about what one could buy for the price of one of these iPhones. Suffice to say a flagship smartphone is one of the more expensive purchases that isn't expected to last more than a few years (and if you do sell it in one or two years, at least it still has some value). Maybe it balances out with the fact that most people do not replace their home computers as frequently as they used to, and new computer prices have dropped tremendously over the years. That doesn't mean that Apple should feel free to jack the prices up every year, along with the cost of AppleCare+ and out-of-warranty repairs. iPhones keep getting more expensive while the cost of a good Android phone keeps getting cheaper (Yes, I know flagship Android phones are in the iPhone price range, but there are plenty of good ones for much less).

Truth be told, I have no remorse for spending nearly $1800. As has been mentioned, the iPhone is a computer, not a phone. Do people still make phone calls? ;) I also plan to change the frequency that I upgrade. Ever since I started with the iPhone 3g, it's been every 2 years. I'm going to hang on to the Xs for 3 years. The only thing I second guess myself on is AppleCare with theft and loss. With my iPhone 7, I might have called twice for support. And I've gotten out of the habit of losing phones ;).

No you're going to upgrade next year because the XS is the same design. Once you see the XI (which will have the same leap as from an iPhone 7 to a X), you're gonna want that phone too lol.

$1800 is nothing. I think the iPhone is underpriced. I want to spend more but at this point Apple isn't letting me spend the $3,000+ I want to. Disappointed but there's always next year I suppose.

These prices are honestly stupid. $1800 for a phone. Stop calling it a computer or whatever. It's a PHONE. I'm thankful my phone is paid off and I'm not in debt paying it off every month. Stupid!

Personally, I think most "add-on" warranties are a rip-off. Especially if you upgrade every year.
A lot of people who opted not to get Apple care are screwed when their phone cracks. You’ll see them selling on eBay all the time.

I have to agree $1800 for phone is way more than I would want to pay, I don’t mind upgrading annually, but personally I would rather own the phone out right than making payments to a carrier for two years or so. Smart phones are generallybecoming more expensive every year, at what point does the consumer say ‘I don’t want to pay that anymore’. I think it really comes down to how does the consumer justify the price point.

I can see both sides of the argument, but I’m happy to pay it and can afford it, so went for an XS Max and can’t wait. I’m only coming from an 8 (great phone), but can’t wait for that huge hdr oled screen.
I splashed the cash on a Sony A1 oled tv last year and the picture quality still blows my mind.

It sure is a phone AND a computer. Not a PC, but it meets the common criteria for what we understand a computer is today. All smartphones do btw, as do many other products these days.

The iPhone prices are honestly getting ridiculous. The iPhones updates are pretty mild now a days, and the difference from say the 7/8 to the X/XS are very minor, FaceID and better camera. I just can’t come to terms paying the new prices on these phones and what they deliver, simply put I don’t do anything different on my current iPhone 8 Plus that I didn’t do on my iPhone 4 or 6. iPhones and cell phones in general have pretty much maxed out their potential.

This is also a phone. Whether or not an iPhone XS is worth paying more for depends on your wants, needs, expectations, and budget. (I think it goes without saying that the iPhone is the only one of the two you can also call a "computer")

Because y'all would definitely be using all 512GB of space on them. Even with over 50 "large" gaming apps, 50,000 photos, 10,000 songs, numerous videos, you won't even be at 256GB. I don't understand why people are opting for an expensive 512GB, it's not future proofing because you will never reach that space even years from now. Very very few use cases call for it.
I don't see how this is hard to understand. I currently have the 256GB X and have about 5GB left. I'm debating going to the 512GB when I next upgrade. I keep my entire music library, pictures, videos, games, etc. I don't even have all of my video library on my phone. I have cloud service to backup pictures, but I don't like to stream my music library or worry about not having something I want when I want it. I also go camping and hiking where cell coverage may not be great and don't want to have to worry about what I want to listen to in advance to load on my phone. I see no issue paying a few extra hundred dollars for convenience.
