Went to a Samsung store yesterday. Tested the Samsung Note 8 for over 2 hours and was grilling the sales people there about what it can do and showing me how to do things, in the process.

Two words: Mind Blown.

This device is so feature packed it's not even funny. I had a Note 3 for 6 weeks, 4 years ago, and sold it to a friend because of too many issues. None of these issues were evident in the Note 8. This device is absolutely mint. It is the closest smartphone you will find to a personal computer and it fits right in your pocket.

Looks and feels very premium, unlike my old Note 3 which came with a removable plastic back.
Easy to hold in one hand.
The camera is ridiculously good.
My favourite feature, the screen, a Samsung employee showed me a video in landscape, holy crap it looked 3D, as if you were there seeing it for real, cinematic effect he called it.
The multitasking, unreal.
The calculator has a built in currency converter.
The customisation, it is insane what you can do when compared to ios.
The floating windows.
The S-Pen, you can literally use it as a mouse.
The local filing system, the Samsung guy used the pen to create an MS spreadsheet and saved it direct to his Note, can do the same with MSW and MSPP.
The camera has a floating button for goodness sakes lol, where you can position the camera button anywhere you want on the screen, for more convenience.
And so much, much, much more.
It was buttery smooth, and like an iphone, it just worked.

Then I went up the escalator to the Apple store to try out the iPhone 8 Plus. After a minute I was like blah. Then I tried the 10.5 inch iPad Pro, after 2 minutes I was like blah. I used the Apple Pencil to draw and that was cool, but I was doing the same thing on the Note 8. Sure the ipad has a bigger screen but I'm not into drawing so the ipad didn't blow any wind up my skirt.

I was with my cousin who has also been an iphone user for 8 years, and she said "I am damaged now". In other words, after playing with the Note 8, she can't look at another iphone.

For those of you who like me have been iphone users for the longest time and are not excited by the X or the 8, or if you are intrigued by the Note 8, do yourself a favour and test it out in the store.

As for me, after everything I said above, I have decided not to get the Note 8. But I'm not getting the X or iPhone 8 either. Instead, I am going to hold onto my iphone 6 Plus until next year, and then I'm getting the Note 9. The 2 things that scared me away from the Note 8 in the end were the touch ID button being at the back and only 64 gigs of local storage. It does have expandable storage but you cannot store apps on an SD card. With a screen like that and with 6 gigs of ram, I fully intend to take advantage of app intensive games and apps, but they take up a lot of room. So I prefer more local storage.

The guy in the store said Samsung is working on a bendable/flexible screen for the Note 9. I don't know how that will work, especially with the glass back, but knowing how quickly Samsung moves, I anticipate that the Note 9 will come with touch ID under the display and more local storage. And if it turns out that neither happens, the Note 9 will still be significantly better than the Note 8 anyway so I intend to go with it.

The only thing that will stop me getting the Note 9 is if the 2018 iphone iteration also comes with features that blow me away. But I'm not holding my breath. I expect the 2018 X iteration will come in a Plus model which will be the killer feature for 2018 (wow), a better chip and camera, more anamojis, and a couple of other features which will be totally useless (ala 3D touch) in the whole scheme of things. Thanks but no thanks.

Bring on the Note 9.

It's one of those double edged swords, though. As someone who used to mod his Android phones and upgraded about every 3 months, the grass isn't always greener. Apple does some things very, very well. They make their own OS and hardware, and the tacky saying "it just works" is spot on. I think Apple has lost the flashy status they once had, and they are just slow and steady. Android, on the other hand, has some awesome features. Google Assistant is lightyears ahead of Siri and probably always will be, same with Google Maps, etc. The problem is the manufacturer that makes an awesome phone this year may ruin it next year, or add their own crap skin on Android OS, etc. Also, the battery drain was and I believe still is a real issue on the Android phones. Many times I'd go to bed with 80 percent charge and wake up with nothing, that has never happened on iPhone.

Yeah, I want to check one out. These things are getting better. It's good that Samsung still uses the S-pen, which is really good, unlike a lot pens for these things. Even Microsoft's pens aren't what they used to be.

Samsung makes good stuff. Is it going to be better than the X? probably not. I'm not going to worry about that :D But I might get one with a bad ESN (which abound on Ebay), if it's killer.

Love the Samsung 8. Colors are just a bit too much for me. Would like it more realistic but not something for me to complain. As far as the software, android sucks ass. iPhone X it is.

iOS intergration with iCloud and all the products such as iPods/Pads/Phones and Apple Watches, and MacOS products, and the continuity between them is outstanding. iPhones don't have to come out with 10 new blow your mind features every year for me to be happy because of how well their products work together,

I'm glad you aren't so blinded by apple to see that other manufacturers offer so much more than. What apple does...I switched from iPhone being my main mobile device around the time of the 4..never looked back...Android has some amazing features just as iOS does..if you're a true techlover u should have devices on and enjoy using both sides. True lovers of tech are able to see the merits of all sides and not just be blindly loyal to a single brand. Personally I don't use the s-pen to justify upgrading to the note 8 from the s8+ I'm typing on now.

Androids software does not suck...the apps that developers put out might..but the mobile is itself does not suck...Android also integrates well with other android/Google products. Just like iOS works well with other apple products...Samsung software experience has gotten much better since the release of the s7

The S8 and Note8 both look great, but the problem I have is every generation of Galaxy phone I've owned (I've every one of them) is when the new one comes out, they release a software update that makes the old one into a turd and that is just unacceptable. I know people complained about Apple when they released a new iOS sometimes the old phones get slower. I mean that's normal. What I mean about being a turd is for some reason the battery life will turn to crap and the phone will get slow... basically every time in my experience with Samsung phones. This year with the S8/Note8 is the first one I didn't buy. Not falling for that crap again coming next release.

I think Apple's ecosystem has pretty much ruined me. As you said, "it just works". And my launch day iPhone 6 has been spot-on reliable.

I came from a Samsung Galaxy phone. Loved the screen and the customization. But everything else was kinda clunky to use. Didn't like the Google Play store. And the stock email system was always giving me fits (yes, I know there are others you can use, but none worked very well with my work email).

Maybe Android OS's have come a long way since then. But for now (and for better or worse) I think I will stick with iOS. But have to admit, the new Note is mighty impressive. Just hope the have finally fixed their battery issues. ;)

I had the S7 Edge for a few months and got rid of it. The S7 Edge came with 32 GB, and 12 GB was sucked up by android OS and bloatware. What a waste. The iPhone OS only takes up about 3GB.

might be on note 11 before that happens
Lol nope u can download Google messenger on the play store set it as the default SMS client..which already supports RCS. the only thing is most ppl on Android aren't even aware of this so until Google steps in and mandates it as a requirement adoption might be slow amongst users. Another thing is carriers need to implement the jibe hub from Google.

yeah but thats kind of the point, the iphone messages app is bullet proof...on android its always a shuffle. honestly that is probably my biggest isssue with android, that and the simple fact that my entire ecosystem is apple.

I shouldn't have to buy a microSD card because Samsung wastes 10 GB more of internal storage compared to the iPhone.
Samsung I think had been offering free accessories with some of their newer phones I think a microsd is one of those accessories u could choose. With the s8+ 64gb I don't even notice 10 gigs going to Android..and I already have microsd so videos and pics are stored there.

Yea I agree that messaging on Android needs to be simplified and to Google's credit they are working to get RCS out there and running once that happens it will be a whole lot better. For now I use something like pulse..which allows me to send and access messages from any device iOS/Android/Mac/pc.

Admittedley I have always had an Andoid phobia myself but honestly I did not see any issues with it yesterday. The Galaxy/Note line and iphone get more and more reconciled each year so they are becoming more and more alike every year, except the iphone is probably more reliable and the Note is far more festure packed.

Two hours obviously isn't enough to conclude anything but if first impressions count then the Note 8 nailed it.

Like I said, the Note 9 can only be superior, not inferior, to the Note 8. So looking forward to the Note 9 release. Smartphone youtubers all say the Note has matured so the days of useless bloatware and useless features and cheap looking hardware on the Note line are long gone. There can be no disputing now, if ever there was a dispute, that the Note is in the Tier 1 group of premium smartphones.

This year's line from Samsung is tier 1 all the way...the s8+ is pretty much a note 8 minus the s pen.
