Too tall.

Samsung's glass rears is more fingerprint prone because it's more reflective like a mirror-finish. Apple's glass rears is less reflective almost like a matte finish. Reminds me of the white front iPod video.

Check the black Note8, space gray 8, and gold 8 Plus at Best Buy yesterday. The 8+ showed the least smudges under direct lighting while iPhone 8 was 2nd best. Black Note8 was filled with fingerprints.

With all that said, Samsung's design team is superior to Apple right now. The successor to the X's camera needs to protrude less. The S6 protruded but got lessened by the last two years. Note8 has Telephoto too and doesn't stick out like the iPhone 6/7/8 series.

I love my Note 8. Was using a 7 plus. Had it just about a month. Its a beautiful phone. Very fast. Great screen (that is sometimes a little too much...like the middle of the night and you can't sleep and reach for the phone...). I love the pen. I use it mostly to navigate around the phone, typing, with a little bit of note taking. Its my business phone so it sees a lot of use. I really do like Touchwiz now (Ive tried more than a few Android phones). Ive always used Nova Launcher in the past, but Touchwiz now works for me.

But...My 3 most used apps are just not the same on Android. Evernote. Voxer. Messages.

I receive most of my work through text messages. These texts often include pics. With the iPhone, and iMessage, I can forward multiple individual texts, and pics, easily to my evernote email address. With Samsung message (and every other text message platform Ive tried), I can only send one "bubble" at a time. This leaves me with multiple notes in Evernote that need to be merged to create one note. Its a PITA. If someone knows of a texting app that allows me to forward multiple texts and pics from within an individual text thread to an email address I would be eternally grateful.

I use Voxer to communicate with my techs in the field. The app is smooth on iOS, but the Android app sucks. I constantly have to close and reopen the app to receive new Vox's.

The Evernote app is just not as polished as it is on iOS. Editing existing notes just isn't as easy on Android. Attaching pics to notes is tedious. I constantly have errors retrieving my notes. They sometimes take forever to open, or won't at all. That never happens with the iOS app. One of the best features though, is being able to pin individual notebooks, and notes, to the home screen. I will miss that when I get my X...

I ordered 2 iPhone X at midnight Thursday. Both 256GB. Black and silver. Nov 17-24 delivery. A few weeks ago after I had just gotten the Note 8, I planned on getting an X, with the intent of giving it to my wife (who is happy with her 6) or reselling it. But after a few weeks with the Note 8, and the apps I use the most, I'm probably gonna keep the X and sell the Note 8. If the X is a good phone for the wife, she'll get the second one. If not I'll return it. I doubt the resale value of it will be profitable a month from now.

There are a couple other apps I don't like on the Note. Facebook isn't nearly as nice as the iOS app. Apple notes is better than samsung notes, and would be even better with the Spen :) I use Smartnews for my news feed. The ads on Android kinda suck. In fact, many Android apps have ads where the iOS version doesn't.

I really do love the Note 8 though. If only it ran iOS....

well both are good phones. especially the screen on the recent samsungs is far better than iphone. They are in the same price range and are direct competitors after all.

I am a galaxy s7 edge user (until that iPhone X ships).

I can tell you a lot of the downsides to androids you won't actually notice in the store. Head to head in store these days, samsung is more impressive to look at no question (we'll see about iPhone X). I think anyone who denies that hasn't seriously looked at the competition. The screen is bigger, brighter, oled and you have tons of unique features. Meanwhile iPhone is this dinky thing with bezels and a low res LCD.

Where iPhone excels is in the software. It's so fast, it's so optimised. Google is probably also spying on you a lot more. A lot of app makers are more lazy with Android. iPhone holds charge well when the screen is off, barely going down overnight(due to how OS software works). You've got software like iMessage, which is great. You've got integration with MacOS, you've got timely version updates.

Neither one is bad. The reason I am swapping to iOS is
-I realized I don't actually care about a lot of the customizability
-iPhone is faster
-I have a Mac and I want that integration

I'm typing this on my one week old Note 8. I still pre-ordered the X, and will pass the Note 8 down in the family. The screen is the best feature on the phone, however, I think it's too lanky and long while the iPhone Plus are the opposite spectrum as they r too wide. Also, Android is not for everyone

Wow, this describes me spot on.

I was an iPhone 6, then 6 Plus user. I decided to switch to the S7 Edge for 7 months. I went with the S7 edge over the S8 because I read that the new processor wasn't worth the upgrade... and boy did I regret switching to Samsung.

Sure, it looks brighter and the screen seems a lot nicer at first, but the lag and the way social media apps ran on it bothered me a lot.

For 95% of what I do - social media, messaging, and video editing - the iPhone does it sooooooo much better. I tried so many different video editing apps but none came close to how well iPhone apps edited videos (and pictures). I'd spend 2-3 minutes rending a video on my S7 edge, which would take about 20 seconds on the iPhone.

Samsung makes good phones, but for a variety of reasons, I prefer Apple & the iPhone. It does just work...

The Note 8 is a great device and has loads of potential. As many have said and including myself, Apples ecosystem has me deeply paired to many other devices. It be too much of a risk for me to abandon everything I have altogether for the Note 8. Given how much I appreciate iOS and it's simplicity.

No qualms if Note8 is the BEST all-around smartphone of 2017. But best is different from favorite. Bronn and Tormund aren't the best characters in GoT but they're my favorites. V20 is my best phone but G5 is my favorite.

Between Note8, V30, Pixel 2 XL, and iPhone X, guess which one I will pick? Remember I'm an Android fan like MKBHD, PhoneBuff, and even Michael Fisher that doesn't like iTunes, boring homescreen, and proprietary nonsense.

It's iPhone X. It's the shortest of the foursome. The most comfortable to hold in my hand. Apple is not my favorite but they have my favorite flagship to pick this year.

Senior - Note 4

X is still an underclassmen. Note8 is a refinement from the Note5/Note7. An upperclassmen of Project Zero. It's the iPhone 5 and 7 of its series.

Future iPhone X successors will get better in time with smaller notch, less camera hump, more interesting features we haven't seen before, etc. For now, kinda beta for the guinea pigs.

My Wishlist
Apple iPhone X (silver)
LG V30 (Moroccan blue)
Google Pixel 2 XL (panda)
Samsung Galaxy Note8 (black)

Note8 is just too tall. Might be considered the best but it doesn't always mean it is best for me. I'm probably not going to get any of them. Already happy with my 2016 Three Amigos of G5-SE-V20.

I agree that it looks gorgeous.

But I still prefer the Apple hardware and ecosystem.

It's the sum of the parts, just like how some android users accept the Pixel 2 XL as they're accepting of the sum of that product, display issues be damned.

Note 8 is compelling. But I just can't do the Android thing: cheap iOS knock off.

Samsung needs their own mobile OS... Tizen anyone?

I’m in the same boat. Got the Note 8 and the experience has been great and it is a great piece of hardware. It’s just the overall experience isn’t just there. It doesn’t sync with my iPad and MacBook Pro like the iPhone can, not that I was expecting it too, so I considered grabbing a Pixelbook and replacing my laptop and tablet. However, Chrome OS still has a long way to go. Also, I’m realizing I prefer the workflow and continuity I had with iOS.

But the Note 8 is definitely Samsung’s best effort and in terms of speed and quality of hardware it’s on par with the iPhone.

I tend to buy the latest iPhone and android flagship every year. The Note 8 is truly a great device. The pixel 2 does not even compete with it.

I commend you for your ability to test something for two hours. Really. I don't even test a vehicle that long before I buy it. Hell, unless you count our Home Inspection, we didn't even spend two hours on the property we jsut bought before going all in lol.

All that said I considered a variant of the S8 for my work phone this year. Ultimately didn't want to spend the money haha.

I agree with your whole post, but would add that Apple also excels in the hardware, especially the CPU/GPU, which is not only highly optimized for their software but is absolutely smoking anything Android phone manufacturers have access to. In fact, they are now closing in fast on Intel desktop chips!

People judge iPhone against Galaxy mostly based on appearance and exterior design (which is a valid dat point) but largely ignore what’s under the hood, which is getting kind of astonishing.

if you're a true techlover u should have devices on and enjoy using both sides.
Disagree, because there are significant gains to operating within a single ecosystem. Gains, which, to me, far outweigh any given feature on any given device.

I'm not saying Apple's has to be the ecosystem you choose, but I have no desire to have a foot in both camps. I'd rather pick the one that works best for me and live with the fact that the other side may have a few cool things I don't get (yet).

People are superficial. If someone doesn't understand the tech trade offs sometimes its just best for them to try the grass on the other side then they will realize it might not be that green and come back.

Lol nope u can download Google messenger on the play store set it as the default SMS client..which already supports RCS. the only thing is most ppl on Android aren't even aware of this so until Google steps in and mandates it as a requirement adoption might be slow amongst users. Another thing is carriers need to implement the jibe hub from Google.

Yeah, carriers don’t seem like they care too much about implementing standard RCS.

Meh, I’m not the type of customer to be impressed by a kitchen sink of features.

I’ll keep my iPhone running boring iOS, knowing that it works consistently every time with a stellar ecosystem.

I switched from a 7 plus a week and half ago to a note 8 and whilst the first few days I was struggling being used to Apple for the past 5 years once I was out of that Apple knows best mentality and I see all the little things that Apple doesn’t do which android does that you just think I can’t believe Apple doesn’t even do this, then my mind was sold.

Build quality is amazing and design feels very premium something that put me off the pixel 2 xl. And as you mentioned the screen is amazing tbh there’s way to many things to mention that are great about this phone. If it can run this smoothe for 1 year then I may have to get the note 9. It feels faster and smoother than my 7plus so far who knows what the future holds.

Samsung bloatware. Enuf said.

Yawn. So it comes with some apps you won't use, big deal. I'm a long time iPhone user who recently switched to the Note 8. It's been a breath of fresh air and not given a second thought to the so called bloatware that certain people liken to the end of the world.

64gb internal storage, 200gb sd card. A few gb taken up by Samsung apps is fine by me for the enjoyable experience I've had so far.

For me never an Android again. I read for years how the S5 was as good as the corresponding iphone, then the S6 was as good as the corresponding iphone, then the S7 was definitely as good or better than the corresponding iphone and now I read that the S8 is defintely as good or better than the corresponding iphone. Well I fell for the hype and got a S7 Edge and have had the S7 Edge for about a year now and this thing is the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. I have learned my lesson.

If the notch is the worst I have to deal with that will be better than about 10 things I have had to deal with on the S7 Edge.
