I thought so too, and returned my 10.5 for the 12.9. BUT, I then noticed that 12.9 is too big and unwieldy and did another exchange and now I'm back with 10.5.

As for it being a big iPhone, that statement is plane silly. Why knock the 10.5 and the owners who are happy with their choice. I know you need to justify your decision but ever think others are happy with the 10.5 and will not like the 12.9?

One size doesn't fit all, and its great that the 12.9 works for you, but if you think that choice between the two is just mobility or money, then you're wrong. I find the 10.5 to be the perfect size for me. Just like how you said the 12.9 is immersive, I too think that of the 10.5. I can easily hold the 10.5 one handed and use it while sitting down, where as the 12.9 was too unwieldly, it seems more at home sitting on a desk being used, where as that's not my use case.

The 12.9 is not for everyone. I returned mine and bought another 10.5. The 12.9 is just too big for me to put up with. Even the keyboard was not near as good as the 10.5. It is good we have choice and you 12.9 users, more power to you!

"Big Phone"? Shame on you.

I looked at an upgrade from my Air 2 and tried out both the 12.9 and 10.5 iPPs. I went with the 10.5 - I didn't like or need the larger size. Glad you like your 12.9 but it's a personal preference and the Big Phone statement is ridiculous.

I'm ok with people saying the iPad is "just" a big iPhone. They may mean it as a negative, but I see it as a positive, because 1) the iPhone is a very capable computer, and 2) the single most significant thing holding it back from being capable enough for work (for many people, not all) is its small size. The small screen limits it to less info/controls and only one app on screen at a time. The iPad fixes that by expanding the screen and freeing up iOS to its fuller potential.

Let's remember that iOS was initially designed for the iPad, not the iPhone--but the iPad was shelved due to circumstances and iOS was retrofitted for the smaller device. It seems to me the only reason the iPad is being negatively compared to the iPhone is that the iPhone came out first. Had the iPad come out first, their focus would instead be on how amazingly productive the iPhone is for its size.

The 12.9 screen size is generally an objective improvement, right? Who doesn’t want more screen real-estate? Same pixel density as 10.5... just more of it.

The handling of the physical size and extra weight is what makes the comparison completely subjective based on how you want to hold your device, how much you want to use it standing or moving around, individual arm size and strength... the way an iPad “feels” in your hands will always vary from person to person.

All that to say, the 10.5 vs 12.9 debate isn’t a purchase decision that can be based on anyone else’s opinion. Try it at the store, try it at home, and it will likely be clear which one works for you.

My personal experience: I picked up a 12.9 a few years back and love it so much I’m not at all interested in trying out a 10.5. I’m sure others feel the same way about their choice, whatever it may be.

Wellllllll... your reasoning makes sense and I definitely agree with your conclusion. But you can also look at it the same way flipped. Mobility is also an objective improvement. Who would say no to more mobility if it didn't compromise anything else?
So both are objective improvements. It's the level of need/want for either that is subjective, as well as the level of tolerance for sacrifice of the other.

I have a 9.7" iPad pro, but I'm wondering if I should buy the 12.9" as my next iPad. With iOS 11 I'm increasingly using the iPad in split screen mode, and then 9.7" is somewhat cramped. On the other hand, I also like to use the iPad when I'm sitting in an armchair or in bed, and I'm not sure I would want the extra weight. Dilemma.

It depends entirely on your use case. I have a 10.5 and my wife has a 12.9. She uses hers almost exclusively on a table or desk. I use mine most of the time while sitting on the sofa. The 12.9 is great as a laptop substitute, but it’s just too big for a hand-held media consumption device. The 10.5, on the other hand, is just the right size for both, at least for my uses.

Yes, that's the thing: I rarely use my iPad on a desk. So, perhaps the 12.9" is too unwieldy.

As a tabletop board gamer, including playing board games in iOS, I really like the 12.9 size for its extra room. Would like to see iPhone X style bezels to get an even larger screen without increasing the iPad's dimensions.

The biggest downside for me is the inability to use it on a plane.

I'm curious what the issue is. I've never tried it myself, but I see many people with all sizes laptops on the plane so I don't understand why a 12.9 iPad wouldn't work.

Does the 12.9 inch show desktop of tablet versions of websites?

As far as which version of websites they show, both iPad Pro sizes are the same. Most sites will show a desktop version, and the occasional site will show a mobile version, but in that case you can always long press on the refresh button and choose to see the desktop site.

Someone will picking up my 10.5 tommorow and ill go straight ahead and get the 12 inches.

It took me 7 days to realized how im using a regular iPad lol

I'm sorry 10.5 owners, you can dispute me as much as you wish, but those precious few inches really do transition the iPad from a "big iPhone" to something much deeper, much more immersive, and much more enjoyable than that. It really does make the iPad feel like a mobile super-computer that you can take anywhere, and view anywhere. You have so much room to view things, to touch things, and you never feel like you're getting a lesser experience than on your desktop or laptop.

If you're reading this and trying to decide between the portability and cheaper price of the 10.5 or the more-expensive 12.9 version, pony up the extra dough and get the 12.9 iPad Pro. It will knock your socks off.
Thats your opinion and as such its fine! It works for you and you appreciate "those precious few inches".

But then there are folks like me who have both the 10.5" IPP and a 12.x" tablet/ hybrid device. I personally have the Surface Pro 4 (12.5") which, as you well know, can also be used as a tablet and which I have used as so in the past. The size of the SP4 - and I mean simply dimensions and not weight - proved to me that using it as a pure tablet was cumbersome. This is the reason I had also invested in a Surface 3 (non pro), which I used as pure tablet (only with the Pen and no KB).

But with the release of the 10.5" IPP, I quickly recognized how good it was compared to my S3, which is why I replaced the S3 with the 10.5" IPP. Again, I only use the Pencil - no KB. And I use it as a pure tablet. Part of the reason is because of my work profile.

So, for me the 10.5" IPP is a truly "goldilocks" version of the iPad and, in this sense, we have to agree to disagree on your observation/ assertion.

I love the 12.9.. but it's waaaaaaay to big to use on the couch or in bed or reading or just pulling it out quickly.. or other examples. Depending on your use, the mini might even be the best. Nothing to dispute on, different strokes for different folks.

People keep saying it’s too big for the couch, which I don’t get at all. I find it great on the couch, and that’s actually how I work all day long. Now, in bed, yes, I bring my Air 2 upstairs. Eventually I will replace the Air 2 with a 10.5 (or maybe the regular iPad, but since I have the pencil it would be nice to be able to use it on both) as my “companion” iPad. For now, though, the Air2 is running very well.

I've always liked the original size and admired Apple's long commitment to it, but now I use (and don't feel tempted away from) an iPad mini 4 and a 12.9" iPad Pro – almost always they serve different purposes for me.

The context of the OP's comment is that the 10.5 is just a big iPhone but the 12.9 isn't he was meaning that the 10.5 is an inferior tablet compared to the 12.9 Not an inferior tablet to him, but stating its for all, where as that's just not the case. Yes on some level all ipads are function like a big iPhone, that comment was first uttered on the day Steve Jobs introduced the iPad. The iPad is much more then that now, but suffice to say the OP was slamming the 10.5 with such a silly remark.

Yep, that was me as I stated earlier in the thread, I got the 10.5, lusted after the 12.9 and then found out how big it was and went right back to the 10.5

People keep saying it’s too big for the couch,
I found that to be the case, in my situation I wasn't using it on my lap, but holding it upright in that function I found the 10.5 to be more holdable then the 12.9 YMMV and your use case may not be mine :)

I love my 12.9 with SKB and last gen silicone back (compromised flash and back mic - don’t care)

I'm happy that you are happy with the 12.9" version; however, I'm perfectly fine with my 10.5" version. My wife has a 12.9" iPad and it is just too big for me. I have my 15" Macbook Pro if I need to do something serious; but, for media consumption, 10.5" is much more portable for me than the 12.9" one.

I’m actually the opposite... I originally ordered the 10.5 and went into the store and played with the 12.9... after that I felt it was a better choice and cancelled the 10.5. I love it but realized quickly I wasn’t using it much because it was so big... really I used it for watching streaming services but I really wanted to be able to read a lot and found that reading in landscape isn’t fun and reading on the 12.9 in protrait is nearly impossible. I bought the 10.5 yesterday and while it’s smaller and I kind of miss the 12.9 I know I’ll use it more because it’s more portable and ultimately more comfortable to use. Ultimately while I love the large screen of the 12.9 the 10.5 is the best for me.

I got the 10.5 after having a 12.9 inch iPad as I appreciate the portability of the 10.5 version. Don’t assume th it’s are valid for everyone just because you think it is.

I have the latest 12.9", but I'm taking my old 9.7" iPad 4 away with me next weekend. Different sizes have different benefits, and so meet individual needs. Having the 12.9 is really useful for testing my apps at the biggest size available, but for most other things a 10.5 would suit me better.

This is similar to something I just posted in another thread. I LOVE my 12.9 and use it all the time, but I also use my old Air 2 constantly (often in tandem... reference materials on small screen, work on big screen). I definitely want both sizes in my ecosystem and might replace the Air 2 with a 10.5 someday.

I went from a 12.9 to a 9.7 to a 10.5. For me the 10.5 is the perfect size for my use.

If I used the ipad more as my main workstation or was less mobile I might be more inclined to get the 12.9. When I had it and had a keyboard attached to it it was just way to heavy to carry around when I could just carry my macbook around and get more functionality but at the same weight.

I am going from the iPad Pro 9.7 to the 10.5 and I have to agree, the size is perfect for me. I knew it would be taller but I didn’t realize that the screen was also a little wider. It’s fast and functional. I got the Black Friday deal on it from Best Buy. It was $525 but with tax around $575. I also need to get the Apple Cover for it so I am trying to figure out if the upgrade is worth the price. I plan to sell my iPad Pro 9.7 to help offset the cost but still trying to decide if I will keep it.

For me, even the 7.9" iPad Mini is much more than just a "big iPhone"...

While I agree with most of your points I don’t think a MacBook Air should be recommended to anyone now. The screen is ancient and terrible. The MacBook is much better for casual use.

I hate to agree with this, but I totally do...

10.5 is small and worthless i agree. ipads are stale fashion anyways

If that's your opinion, then fine. The rest of us are enjoying the heck out of them.

Yep love mine..

I’ll likely go for the 12.9 in the future at some point. Is the keyboard layout a lot better on the 12.9? I’ve not seen it.
