I'm sorry 10.5 owners, you can dispute me as much as you wish, but those precious few inches really do transition the iPad from a "big iPhone" to something much deeper, much more immersive, and much more enjoyable than that.

Not sure why one would be sorry. ;-)
Being larger is an attractive feature to some and being smaller is an attractive feature to others. I think we should all be grateful to have the choice. And to be not so grateful to see the choice of a smaller option (mini) fade away...

I’d like one of the small ones just for reading books. It does feel a bit odd to me though to have two iPads in my carry bag. The Mini seems like an accessory to the larger one. What it needs is a lower price and support for the pencil. I’d have thought the mini would be the perfect notepad for school. You can read books, reference books, take notes, and do all of the things that can be done on the larger iPad with the sole expection of size, which translates to more comfort in some apps and less in others. So in other words, it’s not ideal as the everything machine. It’s an accessory. As an accessory it can’t cost as much as it does. If Apple can get the 9.7” down to $279 then they ought to be able to do the same with the 7.9”. It seems to me Apple is still searching for the right formula for each model. I think part of that formula is getting broad support for the pencil.

They might think about a new notepad which has more sophisticated audio recording for students. Maybe if machine learning really takes off it would be pretty sweet to have live text translation and note taking of spoken words. And there should be a record of the audio, plus the translated text. They could use this on the voice mail as practice to get it solid. AReally need to strengthen their machine learning efforts there. I think there is a next generation of useful software just waiting for machine learning.

For me, it was the oposite.

Regardless of the size, the iPaf is, fundamentally, a content consumption HANDHELD device. It is the ultimate couch toy. As such, the 12.9" is unconfortable to hold: it is too big, too much gesture travel, keyboard keys too far apart, etc. I enjoy better holding a smaller/lighter device.

Besides, in my opinion iOS and most apps dont take advantage of such big screen.

I just started to utilize the multitasking features. That alone makes me wish I had a larger display.

But if you do split screen, I assume the 12.9" does take advantage, since each "window" is equivalent to the 9.7" (I think).

Wow. It’s not quite, but I didn’t realize how close it was until I read your post and held my Air2 up in front of my 12.9. It’s like 1 2/3 of the screen... so pretty close, really.

Unless something has changed, the 12.9 inch iPad is just a blown up version of every other iPad, isn’t it? If Apple would let us take advantage of the extra screen space, then I think I’d be interested. Even if I could just put more icons on each page. But right now I thought it’s just the same thing but bigger.

My understanding is that there are some differences in how multitasking is handled. Also, I think you can fit more things in the dock. https://www.imore.com/ipad-multitasking

I didn’t know that, and that is kind of cool if you need that, and really would be cool either way :). I’d be much more interested though if I could see more of a spreadsheet, or more of a webpage, etc. Multitasking is nice, but I want to do more and see more of what I’m working on if I have such a large screen.

I guess it depends on your starting point... my eyes are crap, so I tend to zoom in a fair amount on my Air 2. So I do end up seeing more of what I’m working on while on the 12.9, since I don’t have to zoom much.

I definitely agree, if you need things bigger, or want things bigger, then the bigger screen is the way to go :)

Also, the resolution is actually larger, not just a blown up version of the smaller iPads. This can be handy for certain apps like excel, etc

Everyone has their own opinion on this. I had the 12.9 first gen for over a year and I've since sold it and replaced it with the 10.5. For me I found with the 12.9 I wasn't using it much like an iPad and was always using it at my desk because of how big it was. I find the 10.5 much more comfortable to use in my hands.
Same for me. The 10.5” is the sweet spot.

That’s good to know, I always thought that they were just a blown up version of the normal iPad, every time I look at them in the store I guess it’s just things that don’t take a vantage of the higher resolution. I would assume Numbers takes advantage of it? Can you see more in Safari, or Mail?

The 12.9 without the bezels and lighter is my dram. (And of course, iOS with ipad features and that isn’t a buggy mess like iOS 11)

I agree the bigger screen is a game changer, but mobility for me isn’t quite there.

I returned the 12.9 and am thinking of getting the 10.5, but I'm still undecided...

I like my 12.9 gen2. My wife has the 10.5. We got my mother the 2017 9.7 iPad. My uncle swears by his Mini4. It is all about what your eyes tend to like more, what your wallet holds and the accessories (maybe Apple Pencil) that you want to purchase for it.

My eyes are not as sharp as they used to be and the 12.9 helps a lot. I'm just glad Apple makes more than one size and memory configuration/color.

My wife likes my 12.9, but can't fit it into her purse and according to her that disqualified the 12.9 for her.

Everyone has their requirements.

The 12.9 will be more usable for me when the bezels get a shrink and with some more weight loss.

It's just too much of a hoss for me to use as I tend to use iPads (usually not as a laptop replacement)

I'd personally prefer an iPad that's even larger than 12.9", maybe something in the 15" range, as an option also.

There is nothing wrong with either, but the 12.9 was just too big for me as I am using mine mostly on the couch or in bed at home or walking around the office at work. 12.9 is best suited for the desktop, while the 10.5 remains better for mobile. I can see reasons for having both.

I agree completely. I use the iPad also in bed, or walking around home, etc. Basically, I hold it in my hands, and the ergonomics of the 12.9 are just not comfortable for that. The 12.9 is a desktop animal, but in my desktop I already got my Macbook Pro, so...
