I just returned my IpadPro 12.9. i had it two months and the high volume button broke. I brought it to the Apple store and the guy there advised me to return it if i can rather than send it in for repair. I don't think Apple's quality is still there. My Samsung tablets - i have two - are a couple of years old and still work fine. Another thing I didn't like on the Ipad compared with Android is the on screen typing, and even worse trying to edit what i typed. Luckily i bought it at Costco which has a 90 day return policy. The bad thing is i just put a Zagg screen protector on it and bought some Apple cables and a few cases (because I couldn't find one that i liked).

Things like this do happen. I don’t believe it’s indicative of apples quality going down though. Most of their stuff lasts a good long while. Heck, that’s why many of us haven’t upgraded our tablets as fast as Apple would like. They just keep working! Sorry it didn’t work out for you though. I wouldn’t be happy either.

Of course there are exceptions. But the idea is really if one doesn’t use the pen then the pro will only be used for a bigger screen which is mostly relevant while watching content and I’d rather watch content on my TV than on the iPad. It depends on your usage. For my usage spending for the Pro would have been waste of money.

I almost never use my Pen, but the Pro is really useful. I get the most out of the pro when I am using it in landscape mode and split screen. I am a heavy office user, and IMO the Word and Excel apps on the iPad are as good as the MacOS versions. Working with Excel/Word on one side of the screen, another app (Safari, Outlook, financial apps, Adobe, whatever) on the other side and with iMessage in slideover is a pretty awesome.

Yeah but all of those can be done with the 2017 iPad model with ease. So maybe the extra money for such users, including myself, can’t be justified.

You can't really run two full size productivity apps side by side on a 2017 iPad (or a 10.5" Pro for that matter).

Are you talking about the size or power here? Because that completely depends on the type of apps one uses. I’m pretty ok with what I need to use it for.

I wish I could return my iPP 12.9" 2nd gen, I sketch on it and love that, but I never really used it for anything else and for that it is a waste of money. Won't buy another iPad unless Apple releases a Mini 5 with Pencil support.

I think it's great people love iPads and use them to the fullest and beyond, but if I could return this iPad Pro I would (I tried to no avail, owned the iPP for 3 months at that point.) Oh well.

There are hardly any moving parts on it, just the two volume buttons and the on and off button. They should be built good enough to last more than 2 months of ordinary use. I didn't drop it ir anything, just used it, and then it got stuck. It still worked but didnt have a positive click anymore, just barely moved if i pushed it hard. I like Android better anyway. I'd get an updated Samsung Tab S2, since i have 2 of them, but I'm not buying an all glass tab s3. All glass indeed! You can get a good buy on the Tab S2's right now. Maybe I'll get a spare. It's solid. There are some things i miss on the IPadPro tho like far better sound and
fingerprint detector.

I totally understand - it shouldnt happen but here and there things like that do happen. There are certainly other tablets that are also good and if one of those serves you better then go for it! I hear ya! ;)

I wonder if the volume button problem I had was an anomaly or if others are having the problem with the new IpadPros...

Googled it. No, I'm not the only one, for instance:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ipad-pro-10-5-volume-button.2052171/

Seems to be an ongoing problem with Ipads not just the newest model.

I recently did some sound searching and took a look at my needs i had an iPhone 7 plus that was a year old i had bought it with the intention of getting the X, i decided $1100 was too much to spend and really started to look at what i needed i ended up downgrading to the iPhone SE it does everything i need to do and the same things as my 7plus. Now i can pocket my phone and operate it one handed i love to. At the same time i decided to spend the extra money on the iPad Pro 12.9 inch. I did love reading comics on it, but at the end of the day the same thing happened, i could do everything i need on my 2017 iPad so back the pro went.

i wish apple would stop this end of hitting just the bottom line with iPad or the top.I i don't need the Pro but want something with a screen as nice as the Air 2, laminated , true tone, etc apple has nothing for me unless i spend the big bucks. I'm happy with the 2017 but i'd pend a few hundred more for a better screen

I just recently switched to the new Galaxy Tab S3 form my iPad Pro 9.7 and a 10.5. I sold the 10.5 and bought the Tab S3 for about half the price. It does everything I need, has a better screen than my 9.7 ipp, is more responsive, and has the S-Pen. Moving over to Android was easy, even after 10 years with iOS and never having touched an Android device before (expect my Note 8 which I have only had for a few weeks).

I did the exact same thing a couple of years ago. Same with my phones, the screen and widgets along with a more open operating system. Grass is always greener..
Bottom line is I’m back on the IPad and iPhone. I have completely voided any tinkling thought of ever going back to Android devices. Even the Google vs Apple App Store drove me crazy. YMMV but nothing works better than the IOS ecosystem. Six months in to Android an you”ll be pulled back to the comfy, dependable, snappy easy to use, solidly build Apple world. There’s a reason why Samsung adds try to tear down Apple while Apple adds speak about how well things work.

I originally got the first GEN 12.9 December 2015 and said I wouldn’t be upgrading to the second GEN but then came June 2017 and I immediately went for it selling my first gen to my dad and getting the 2nd gen 12.9 Looking back now call the new features of the 2017 model are not very noticeable and I would’ve rather stayed with the same 1stgen model But my dad did get an iPad out of it and he was looking to buy one anyways so it worked out for the both of us he got a 12.9 iPad and I got the next generation
Only real difference I’ve seen with the new 12.9 vs the old 12.9 is response to the Pencil. If you don’t use the Pencil then no real difference significant enough to upgrade, unless you have money to burn.

I suppose that is possible. But both have the same number of issues, lags, and quirks. So for me it will always come down to function. And for now, the Samsung line is so much better in that area. If Apple allows more customization and adds a pen to the iphone, I will take another look at iOS. But right now I am VERY happy with my Tab S3 and Note 8. The devices, apps, and experience have been exceptional.

I prefer this size--its more like a book than a computer.

I like the size of the Pro which I ONLY use when out of town, mostly to watch TV or video. I purchased a refurbished model about a year ago for $469 to replace my iPad, 4th generation and LOVE the size for my purposes. Unlike most users, I'm not carrying it around regularly so, as the saying goes, YMMV!

My original iPad from 2010 is still working.
It really depends on luck. If you buy a second one and even that develops a snag, then you should continue with Android tablets.

Yeah or even a new one. The 9.7 iPad pros are on sale at many places now and that’s for brand new ones. I’m very close to grabbing one myself as an upgrade to my air1. I wish they had the 4GB of RAM that the 10.5 has but other than that its got solid hardware that should last for a while.

Don't do it. The shelf life for 2GB of RAM will be the same as how your 1GB lasted. You don't want a RAM crippled device two generations in a row.

I've used both and the Pro is nice, but it's not 300+ dollars better. Not even close.

I can see this point of view. I’m struggling to justify keeping my $523 (on sale) 10.5 Pro when the 2017 regular iPad can be had at $199 this week.

The above 2 posts I think are correct. But is an extra 2gb worth $300+ more?

It depends on your use case. If you don’t need what the iPad Pro 10.5 offers then return it and buy the lower model. The Pros offer 4gb RAM, ProMotion display and support for the Apple Pencil. If your needs are basic, like emailing, viewing photos, viewing videos, web surfing, playing games that are not graphics-intensive, then the base iPad is suitable for you.

Yes, that’s true and good points. The Pro might offer better longevity with 4gb RAM, more storage in the base model, and faster processor, whether using it for basic needs or not. That may or may not add up to $300+. Some may also like the larger (and maybe better) screen, even if not using the advanced features.

It took me a while to be able to properly weigh the value of things like ProMotion, TrueTone, etc.

Having had this 2nd gen iPP 12.9 for about five months now, the value of the ProMotion and TrueTone is not much to ME.

I previously had the 1st gen iPP 12.9... and if I had a do-over, I would keep that. And pass up over the upgrade.

The latest iPP is awesome, the speed... and display is crazy good. But I fell into the hype... with everyone praising ProMotion, I’m definitely not planning on purchasing the upgrade with FaceID. I’m alright with this one..

The pull to avoid "missing out" is very strong. It's definitely something that takes time to work through. I've stumbled a few times myself in that regard before "pulling free". :D
