It’s always entertaining, year after year, how people are somehow shocked their iPad is still a glorified toy.
I love my iPad, but I don’t pretend it’s not a toy.
Toy for you, tool for others.

And that is a valid, logical point that everyone can understand.I have to be honest here, but I'm finding it really hard to find things that my M1 1TB 12.9" model does significantly faster than my wife's 2020 model. And by siginifcantly I mean really noticeably faster. Its honestly amazing how good the A12z chip already was. It's not as a significant upgrade as I thought it would be.
Agreed. And that is a valid, logical point that everyone can understand.
But saying an iPad Pro 12.9” is just a more expensive, bigger iPhone, is like saying a Lincoln Navigator is just a larger, more expensive Mini Cooper. Yes, but really, no.
Toy for you, tool for others.
I think what annoys the fans of the device the most is the fact it COULD be an absolutely amazing device but Apple chooses to restrict it time and time again, and people have just given it a last straw now.
To each their own...
But I have to say, reason 4 (I already have an M1 Air which is worlds ahead of this iPad due to MacOS) is like saying "I have a lawnmower, so I don't need a snow blower. Two completely different tools for two different jobs.
How would you or anyone know?I have to be honest here, but I'm finding it really hard to find things that my M1 1TB 12.9" model does significantly faster than my wife's 2020 model. Hardly anything at all has been optimized yet for the M1 chip. This model has only been out a few weeks, the first major OS update to provide some benefit has not been officially released yet and it's entirely reasonable to assume that the feature-set will continue to adjust and grow. There is no reason to believe that the ability of this device won't continue to grow.
Please explain why the iPad Pros need to be able to do any of that.To be fair, I appreciate that we will be able to make iOS and iPad apps in iPadOS 15. But it’s just too little, too late. PROs need a complete file system and a non-sandboxed Unix terminal. I should be able to create command-line applications and run them *on the iPad*. I should be able to run Swift scripts and background services *on the iPad*.
Universal mode is a nice gimmick but it won’t make me go out and buy a new iPad just to swap files between operating systems.
The traditional sandboxed walls of iOS don’t translate well for the iPad when it’s just begging to be used in Mac-like ways. I can definitely understand the frustration but I will always offer the same advice: Just get a Mac.
I expect that over time, there will be tweaks, new features and new software (or new versions of current software) that will clearly benefit the new power that is in the Pro line. What do you expect to happen?
What do/did you use your 11" iPad Pro for, if you ended reaching for your iPhone before the iPad?
Is there a 12.9” iPad at half the price?Since I’ve now read several posts to that effect - People think they “need” an iPad Pro for… media consumption and browsing the web?
To each their own, of course, but that strikes me as a lot of money for what you could just as well do on a device half the price.
Even if you factor in that web pages are getting more complex over time, that seems a bit overkill.
Then again, I’m the sort of person that buys according to what I need to get a specific task done (or just a little higher to make sure I don’t have to buy again next year) and not according to what I can afford.
Are you sure it is rejected if not supporting Air 2? I can see that the developer want to address as large market as possible so including everything from Air 2 and up give more opportunities. This is part of the problem. The A chip performance increase has been exponential and because of that apps needs to span a large performance range of hardware and still be usable. This sets the limit for pro "apps" for iPad but it will be better.Devs can’t really make anything specifically for the M1 iPad Pros. For example, pretty much every app submitted must also be able to run acceptably on an iPad Air 2 (thanks to the fact that they support iOS 15), or it may be rejected from the store.
There are a few exceptions for functions like AR and LiDAR.
Until this limitation is removed, I don’t see how anything specifically optimized for the new iPad Pros could be released.
Agree. Have a 2020 iPad 12.9 and I use it constantly. Only use the phone if I am standing in line or something similar. At the end of the day, I feel bad for people who either have a 12.9” and love theirs, or are interested in the 12.9” and could’ve really enjoyed it but because of posts like this, are now skewed away.
I, for one, love my 12.9” and always reach for my iPad in which an iPhone can do the same. The added bonus is that I can do real work on my 12.9” that my iPhone struggles.
What happened to your 12.9? You still have your Air? I’m glad I went the M1 Air route and kept my 2018 12.9. I think next year I’ll upgrade to the next iPad Pro.I’ve decided mine is being returned due to the defect it has and going to get a full refund instead and will pick Up the 11 inch instead

The only developer that has created or “restricted”, enhanced, what have you, to the M1 iPad Pro is Filmic Pro. I suspect that some of the more “Pro” apps in the iPadOS catalog will gain M1 only features in the coming months, but even those Pro apps need to reach the widest possible audience in order to stay relevant. I don’t see iOS 15 changing the status quo much nor the M1 iPad Pro being exploited to its full potential. It’s becoming less relevant to most people now that the M1 powered Macs are on the scene.Devs can’t really make anything specifically for the M1 iPad Pros. Damn that flickering is bad. Since you still have your M1 MacBook Air, the 11” makes a ton of sense. This is what happened. Even after a reset.
still got my mac yeah. The wait here for a new 12.9 is like two months so will go for 11 inch I think

From this statement... the 11inch seems like a temporary fit until the 12.9 becomes available for you, no?The wait here for a new 12.9 is like two months so will go for 11 inch I think
