I sold my iPad to be replaced by the iPhone 4!!

To me this makes only sense! Its like basically having the iPad in my pocket.

Sure I get less battery life and screen realestate, BUT its incredible that the iPhone 4 will have the same IPS panel and the same amount of pixels! If the iPod Touch gets the same specs without the phone functionality I'd end up getting that instead.
 
Yes you can do all that on the iPhone 4 but for me, there's a use for the iPad still.

Since I'm elligible for an upgrade (still using the first iPhone 3G), I will be getting the iPhone 4 and keeping my iPad. I will be using my iPad at home where it belongs and the take the iPhone with me when I venture out. A perfect combination.

How exactly do you work that out? Just because it has a better screen with higher resolution doesn't make it any closer to what the ipad does. How does higher quality text equal the same web browsing experience as the ipad??
 
The point of the iPad is the big screen size. It doesn't matter how awesome or hi res the iphone screen is it is still a phone. I can't stand using my iphone much anymore for movies, web etc after using the ipad. I will still get the iPhone 4 but it will compliment my ipad. HD ipad apps will not run on the iPhone 4. Also try doing RDP on an iPhone.

If you think a new iPhone can replace the iPad you probably didn't understand the iPad at all. No way could a phone replace my netbook, for example.

Well, you'll see this a lot. These are two very different devices from the user experience perspective. But people will continually try to replace one with the other depending on the latest h/w release and try to justify the ownership of one device versus the other one. I am really enjoying my iPad and I will also be getting the new iPhone once it's out.
 
I guess for me and my usage from the iPad, portability would come more in handy than the bigger screen size that the iPad offers.

Pretty much the iPhone 4 can do the exact same things as the iPad can do (miniature size version) which is what I needed.

Nothing wrong with the iPad it is a great device.
 
Yep. The preference totally depends on what your objective is. For mobility, the iPhone is obviously more convenient. The iPad is more of a netbook replacement. I am actually looking forward to testing the new iPhone's camera. Hopefully it will be able to replace me carrying around a little p&s camera.
 
The only way the OP's decision makes any sense at all is if he's never owned an iphone or ipod touch before (which I'm guessing is the case).

What can iPhone 4 do that the older iPhone can't that makes it closer to the iPad?

I don't understand your logic. iPhone 3GS can't replace the iPad but iPhone 4 can even though it has exact same functionality.

That's like saying the 2009 smart car won't replace my SUV but the 2010 with 30 more hp can!
 
I'll add that (and I am probably off by a percentage or two) that the iPhone 4 is only 78% the number of pixels as the iPad.

Physical size is everything for me :D

I know 95% of people here would disagree (and I don't care!)

But if for an extra £200 an iPad that instead of a 9.7" 4:3 screen had a 17" widescreen I'd buy it tomorrow.

Just imagine the screen from a 17" widescreen laptop. that's what I want.

If I'm going to carry a large device that won't fit in a pocket, another 2 or 3 inches here or there is not going to make any difference.

As I say, I know I'm probably the only one on the planet that wants this.

No, tell a lie, I don't think I am at all.

I bet if there WAS a 17" widescreen option in the iPad models lineup, there would be quite a number that would have gone with it :)

Gimmie a bigger screen Mr Jobs :)
 
I think some users are thinking the iPhone and iPad are interchangeable, when they clearly are not. The iPad is a complementary device and not meant to replace anything. The iPhone is still a phone.

I think OP might have missed that point in the iPad hype. Personally, I am using both together for different purposes. Browsing on the iPhone is torture compared to the iPad.

So following that logic, wouldn't you have to give up your first-born for adoption when you have a newborn? The newborn would fit better in a crib.

There is no way that i would trade the functionality of the iPad for the new iPhone. I am trying to figure out ways to get rid of my iphone completely. Not keep it.
 
Yeah ok , iphone = ipad ....... NOT !

iPad is so much better at ALMOST everything. My iphone is barely used now. However I love having my iphone everywhere I go and dont mind using it in a pinch for email/browsing but give me my ipad whenever possible.

I will buy the iphone4 but I will never give up my ipad (at least not till rev 2) :D

I love it !

Even if iPhone 4 had higher resolution screen, application developers won't be able to use them the way they can on iPad. It would be like using an iMac sitting on a couch 10 feet away. Take Financial Times iPad app, for instance (which won WWDC design award). On 9.7" iPad screen, everything is readable. On 3.5" iPhone screen, controls will be too tiny and most of it will be unreadable.
