I am getting the iphone4 but if I had to sell one the iPhone would be the one to go I just found Apple care for it for 39.00 bucks .lol

I can somehow kind of understand where the op is coming from.

I'm actually taking mine back tomorrow for a number of fault related reasons but I wont be getting a replacement, rather a refund.

After seeing the new iPhone specs I am kind of dissapointed with the specs on the iPad. As always - Apple is the king of the incremental upgrade.

Yeah yeah I knew the specs of the iPad before buying it but hey I'll do what I please.

My wife and I love the iPad so much that we decided to get the new iPhone 4's when they come out as well. Of course we will be keeping the iPad.

I'll add that (and I am probably off by a percentage or two) that the iPhone 4 is only 78% the number of pixels as the iPad.

So to the OP who said - "BUT its incredible that the iPhone 4 will have the same IPS panel and the same amount of pixels!" is wrong.

To each their own though

Ok I was mistaken about the pixel but 78% is pretty awesome for such a small screen but the IPS panel is incredible nonetheless.

I cant wait to get the iPhone 4 so I can always keep it in my right pocket and pull it out to do whatever I would originally have done on the iPad on the go! :)

The iPhone in no way replaces an iPad.

I'll stick with both. The iPhone 4 when I'm out and the iPad for when I'm at home, using Air Video, for example. You'd be made to sell your iPad for an iPhone 4. But that's just my opinion...

Even if iPhone 4 had higher resolution screen, application developers won't be able to use them the way they can on iPad. It would be like using an iMac sitting on a couch 10 feet away. Take Financial Times iPad app, for instance (which won WWDC design award). On 9.7" iPad screen, everything is readable. On 3.5" iPhone screen, controls will be too tiny and most of it will be unreadable.

Well, of course you can't replicate the layout. But there's no reason the articles themselves can't be perfectly readable if formatted correctly and given options to increase type size. Most iPhone news apps are pretty good in this regard.

Thats one of the things that I dont like about the iPad is the air video server. Even on my iPhone 3GS I was streaming video through air video via 3G any where I travel BUT on the iPad (even with tweaking the settings) always have problems streaming from air video server. I remember one day the air server just didnt want to connect and I emailed the air server team which they told me that their server was down for that day. Also (I know not everyone is having this issue) but only over air video my videos would freeze at least once a day on my iPad (but youtube and abc and everything else worked fine without any freeze).

I'm not sure if it was due to converting live over the air to itunes compatible video or not but it was annoying to hardboot the iPad at least once a day for me.

I could have gotten an exchange but I really felt like it wasnt a hardware issue as when I was streaming air video from a friends wireless network for 2-3 days, it did not freeze. So perhaps it was a router issue with the iPad's wifi?

Either way, I loved the iPad to use around the house but nothing more. At first I believed that the iPad was totally different from the iPhone but after a month and the honeymoon period was over, I realized its nothing more than an oversized iPhone (well actually realized this even more so now as the new iPhone 4 has the same hardware as the iPad).

Usually, I'd like something smaller to use thats not as cumbersome (something that will fit in my pocket). I know the iPhone 3G/3GS has been out for a long while now that already could do this but I feel that the iPhone 4's specs is almost on par with the iPad with the size that I need. Thats just fits the bill for me. But hey, I do agree that the iPad is the perfect device to use around the house.

Funny thing is that I listed my iPad 32GB Wifi only version on eBay and it sold LITERALLY IN 15 MINUTES!! LOL.

ill be keeping my ipad and getting the iphone 4.

ipad i use at home in my lap to surf the web,get mail etc...
iphone only gets used during the day now when i want to check FB or mail.

dont really surf the web on the iphone as much as i did before the ipad.

cant wait for the 24th...im on vacation that week and not going any where but the apple store :D

But that is precisely my point. Although iPhone 4's higher pixel density will mean higher quality text, we won't necessary see more text on the screen as a result. iPhone is a bit like looking at iPad through a hole.

Hmm, that's like ditch a 40" 720p HDTV for a 20" 1080p HDTV, the movie look so much better on my new 20"! Not really.

Now if you replaced your iPad for iPhone because FaceTime, and HD video recording, and phone capability, THAT I can understand :)

I'm getting the phone for $200. But it's not going to replace the iPad.

There not comparable.

I very rarely ever stream Air Video over 3G. I do it over WiFi, when I'm out, at a hotel, at home, whatever... You can NOT beat the screen size of the iPad. Comparing the two is still madness. I don't care how high res the iPhone screen is (well, I do, but that's for when I'm out and about) - you can't beat the size. And Air Video is amazing over 3G or WiFi. Your experience is not typical, that's for sure...

PLUS, I'm glad my iPhone battery actually lasts a bit longer now that I have an iPad. Plus playing games on the iPhone isn't in the same league as playing them on the iPad.

I mean really, there's a huge number of reasons why you should keep the iPad.

I kinda get your logic OP but the iPad has really found a place in my and my wife's life. Believe it or not, the iPad has kept us in the same room for much longer instead of one of us going to the basement to use the iMac. The iPad is great for casual computer use.

The iphone has a place too, on the road. I'll be getting the 4 too, there's a place for both devices in my life.

Got to be both for me too,

iMac indoors as main computer,iPad as sofa browsing device iPhone 4 for out the house stuff.

Why compromise.

Well for me though I use the air video quite ALOT. Almost daily if you ask me. For some reason the iPad's version of the air video doesnt work well (when away from the home network). The iPhone 3GS never failed me (probably due to the screen size or much smaller bandwidth needed for the iPhone).

Either way, I just think that the iPhone 4G is the game changer. More battery life than the 3GS, IPS display, much higher resolution screen, has iBooks, and most important for me though is portability.

I did lug around the iPad everywhere I went and forsure it is much easier to carry around than even a 13" macbook but I found it still cumbersome for some of my outings. I'd just wanted something that'll fit in my pocket and the iPhone 4 will be perfect.

Another gripe I had about the iPad is that I wanted to get a rubber fitted housing around the iPad to protect it (which I did) BUT all the iPad cases I found made the iPad weigh almost 2x more than it originally weighed. I tried the invisible shield as well but it doesnt protect the edges of the iPad and corners. I do love the weight of the iPad without any case on it though.

Hmmmm.

I thought cheap phone + iPad
old iPhone + iPad
iPhone 4 + iPad

Never considered no iPad, I don't think I ever will consider that.

It's a miracle! Can I get a witness!?!?

I'm still going with both :D
Well !!!!!!! Lol !!!

I tend to agree with the OP. I am probably going to return my just-delivered iPad and rely on an iPhone 4 instead. I'm not seeing any very good reason to have both together with an iMac and MacBook, too. The iPad seems completely redundant.

Best response ever

IMHO its the most vague non thought out response. Screen real estate on such a device would determine the size of the machine as a whole. If anything, I wish the iPad was 4.5-6" big so it can be bigger than the iPhone while being much smaller than the iPad.

I saw the ad for the Ramos W7 that runs android and its a small 4.5" tablet, if the iPad came in this form that would be so SWEET.

The screen would be big enough to comfortably read on and you can stuff it in your pocket.

Thanks for this OP. I was loving my iPad but now that I know you are selling yours to get an iPhone 4 I have completely changed my mind. iPad sucks!

I never meant to make this post to say that the iPad sucks, its just that for my needs the iPhone 4 would fit my needs. I still think the iPad is one slick piece of hardware and maybe in the future, I might jump back.

My iPhone has turned into just a phone for me now, voice, texting, and GPS are its uses with an iPad. I can't imagine thinking a iPhone as superior to a iPad, no matter how nice the screen is, it is 3.5in.
