I sold my 2009 Mac Pro to a guy for 1600 bucks on ebay. He couldn't make a go of it and now he's returning it. Ebay sucks

I couldn't find a buyer for my 1,1 octocore / 14 GB / 5770 / W7 in bootcamp / stuffed with disks, but when my plumber friend came over this afternoon with his high school sophomore son (who's attending the same HS I did, many years ago) giving it to the young man seemed to me like an excellent idea.

He's a good kid, smart and savvy in many ways, had an oldish laptop and was saving for a new PC, and now it's his. I had a spare HP 2475 monitor, so he got that too.

I do believe in the paying it forward thing, especially in the remote small town/public highschool context.

What config? I'm having a tough time getting $1000 for my 2009 2.93GHz Quad with 12GB and dual GT120s. Lots of offers for $800 but that seems too low to me.

----------

Just sold 2009 4,1 quad 2.66 GT 120 + 4GB Ram for $1100

is that price kinda low? what would 8gig ram worth then?

That seems like a great price... Wish I could get that. :(

oh ok...i guess with 4gb ram..

If we're talking about stock machines, in the US you can find many 2009s under $1000 in some of their larger markets. They're 2009s. What do you expect? Their benefit is that if you sink enough into one, it's still a very nice machine. In their base configuration what do you really expect close to 5 years after their debut (March or April 2009 IIRC)? They started at $2500 in that configuration, and enough people are dumping them.

They definitely have a few advantages over current nMPs. Multi-internal disk, PCIe, your choice of video, etc. it's really too bad apple didn't do a nMP version that also had internal disks and some PCIe slots.

I would agree with that. You can pick up a 2009 model, upgrade drives, gpu, ram, and slide a W3680 in there, but it's easy to spend $1500 on upgrades right there for something like a W3680 + NVidia 680 gpu and either a newer boot drive or ssd. I probably would not sink over $1000 in the initial machine prior to that.

That would have been more like 2 years ago. It's not like the depreciation is that bad from launch through to today. It's just not as cost effective to upgrade one to something highly desirable relative to current hardware if your initial cost is $1500. Edit: note how even at least one of the used mac retailers has dropped to the $900 range on that model.

Mac of All Trades has had the 2.66 Quad 4,1 for as little as $699 in the past few months. It was $799 for a quite while and only recently increased to $899. Unfortunately, even dual GT120s don't get people very excited these days.

I paid $1,100 for one over a year and a half ago from a local reseller. I was extremely happy they gave me $100 for the GT120 I traded in toward a new 5770. My 4,1 is a wonderful hex 5,1 now, loaded with RAM and SSDs, a DAW monster.

probably went down due to new mp.

Why?
I mean why should you sell your MP 4,1 - 5,1 for the new one?
Unless you're rendering that is.

Sold my 2009 2.93GHz Quad, 12GB, 1TB HD with dual GT120 for $1000 today. I kept the original box in the garage for the last 5 years and the buyer didn't even want it! What kind of person would not want the box?! :D

wow.....can't imagine someone not wanting the box. local sale?

i just dug out my box (in storage for 5.5-6 years!) for my 2008 mac pro (8-core). listed it for $850 and sold it for $850 less than five hours later.

Yeah, local sale. He must live in an apartment or something where storing a box that size isn't practical.

i always sell locally without box. im a apple box hoarder. 3 imac, 2 mac pro, and countless laptop, iphones and accessories boxes. plus my pride and joy the apple cube box i got from a dumpster. im such a loser.

Because... It's 5 years old, very loud, puts out a ton of heat, is huge, doesn't have thunderbolt, no usb3, the 12-cores rarely get used anymore, etc. Lastly, it has paid for itself many times over. Time for a new multi monitor dev machine.

curious....what does it usually cost you to perform the upgrades to 12-core + faster memory?

i was looking for a good 4,1 a while back but couldn't find what i was looking for (price & condition) and eventually decided i wanted to go with a brand new machine.

A firmware hack, $400-2000 dollar cpus depending on your preferred clock speed, and a very stressful upgrade process

i read all about -- and was very intrigued by -- the firmware hack. i was curious how much it all costs.

i had a 2008 which i loved (best computer i've ever owned, at least until the last month or so). had i happened to buy a 2009 instead of the 2008 at that time, i would likely have made those upgrades. (my 2008 was in phenomenal shape.)

didn't feel like it was worth buying used and then upgrading, simply because i couldn't find one in the condition i wanted.

so cool to basically transform the 2009 into a 2012.

I do want to sell my Mac Pro locally. Is this a reasonable price for what I put together?

$500

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 1gb - Firmware edited to support EFI

Original Apple Hard Drive

The original CPUs, RAM, and video card will be included.
