I'm curious how this works out for you - best of luck.

What really got my interest though are the photos in the background, on the wall, when you took a photo of the bend. Did you take those?

IKEA, a set of 3 photos for $9.99 and the frames were $1.99 ea (wood color) so I bought a bottle of spray paint and painted them black for $.99

back on topic. The Genius told me today that he has no way of knowing what exactly happened internally, so he does recommend I send in to Apple Care and have them take a look at it to better access the problem (they will take it apart and look at all the components). But Master Card already told me that my card qualifies for Extended Warranty service and that they will cover the repair fees ($299) at no charge to me (no deductible).

the reason for my appointment today was just so that I could get the quote of the repair fees that Master Card needs me to fax in as part of my claim, so I didn't walk out too disappointed as I did get that. Although I still feel like its my words against Apple, and Apple has the upper hand. :(

I hope this is resolved OP. You don't seem the type to lie but as i haven't seen any other claims of this nature im not sure what it would look like if the battery had indeed swelled on you.

Good luck with Apple, but I wonder if it is possible that you fell asleep with it during the night and rolled onto it?

Fell asleep with mine a couple of nights ago. My S.O. said she had to pry it from my hands. I think she's jealous of the iPad.

occam's razor. first you eliminate all impossible answers and determine what is most likely.

People, and Apple, have looked at the iPad and determined the damage was inflicted externally. You say it was there in the morning, when you woke up, and you were home alone. So really, all that leaves as the most likely explanation is you did it yourself. Have you ever had any history of sleep walking, or doing things in the night without remembering? It's more common than you think. You may have leaned on the ipad with your elbow during the night and just have no recollection of it. I know how frustrating it is to not have people believe you, but it's worth considering all the possibilities. In future, maybe put your iPad in a case during the night or in a safer spot.

I woke up this morning, grabbed my iPad off of my nightstand and was browsing the internet and caught up on e-mails. After 30 minutes of using my iPad I got out of bed and placed my iPad back on my nightstand, I then went downstairs to go eat breakfast.

After an hour or so I came back up to grab my iPad so that I could play some games on it, but this time as soon as I turned it on I immediately realized that it is now in-operable.

the screen is now almost 1/2 dead, their is some separation going on between the screen and the aluminum border and when I hold it on its side I can see an obvious bend. I am home alone, so in the last hour no one has used my iPad and I have not charged my iPad in a week (currently 32%), so it was not due to power shortage and it has not been dropped, ever. I am not 100% if this happened because of the battery, but I don't know what else to assume, but my iPad does feel a little thicker.

Has anyone else here had this problem? I do have an appointment at the genius bar tonight at 7pm, hopefully they can help.

Looks more likely that your iPad got bent, not battery swell, in that case you're hosed. Apple warranty does not cover accidental damage.

I didn't want to post anything until I had good/bad new to report. On tuesday i received the empty box for my iPad for me to send into Apple Care and as of this morning my claim with MaterCard is still Pending. if my claim with MasterCard is approved, they will pay in full the repair fee of $299 at no charge to me.

Last week I called Apple Care and requested to send in my iPad to get it reviewed by a professional (not just a genius employee), and the woman on the phone said that their would be no fee to me to do so. Apple.com claims that if they determined that my product is out of warranty, I will be billed any fees that accrued during the teardown/inspection of my iPad up to but no more than $100. So I am waiting to hear back from MasterCard first before I send it into Apple.

They cover their bases too much. This should be an exception where they want to take care of the customer rather than give fifteen caveats that you may have to pay a lot of money.

Oh well. Such is the Legalese-filled world.

Your assessment of the damages seems fairly off. If it were "bent" then I believe the damage would also be to the glass. If it were pushed from side to side then you'd notice that on the sides. This looks like some sort of swelling. I hope it works out for the OP.

And I live in Oulu, Northern Finland.

I bet nobody lives near me.....

:(

Ha, True not anymore. I lived there for a year. I miss Oulu. Especially Vappu, the vessibus #69, Qstock, and all the finanssi parties at Oulun Yliopisto! Voi Voi. Hevi mesta for a beer the Kaarlenholvi later on. Ahhh... those were the days.. life as an exchange student was pretty great.

My iPad is not swollen, it suffered no impact, it's been in a closed Apple case, yet between this morning and this afternoon a 2-inch band of failed pixels appeared.

Is this the same problem described in this thread? I can't tell from the photo in the first post.

You'd need to take it to Apple for them to check it out. If there are no physical signs of damage they'll have to exchange it. Though doesn't mean they actually will.

I sense the whole story hasn't been told here.

Don't get me wrong, but why would you make a thread in a forum about a lie, if the OP would lie he would lie to apple not waste his time in a forum, that was my first assumption too, but i guess it could be something else

I still don't believe I'm at fault here with my iPad, but Apple doesn't see it way.

I also want to say thanks to all of you who replied this thread and thanks for all of your opinions, they were great and I do have an update for you guys today.

Since Apple believes that I'm at fault here and wouldn't replace my iPad, I had to contact my Credit Card company for insurance. After submitting a claim for the repair fee ($299) almost three weeks, all I have been able to do is wait for the approval, which I got confirmation of this morning. I should be getting a check in the mail sometime this week (it was approved and mailed out last friday, but I was busy this weekend I didn't notice the email until this morning).

My birthday is this saturday, and I will be spending it in the bay area with family, so I already booked an appointment at the Valley Faire Mall Apple Store to get my replacement (now I have to cross my fingers and hope they have replacement units in stock)

I did attempt to take my iPad appart to look inside (and I got close to taking the front panel off) but I feared that I would damage it more that Apple would completely refuse to even replace this unit for $299. So I guess I will never know what actually happened, but seeing the other photos people posted, I know I'm not alone in this.

Calling BS on Apple for just assuming that the OP caused the damage. I have a Macbook Pro, and the casing has warped, not because anything I've done, but because it got hot and the aluminum warped. It didn't cause any problems with function, but it's definitely has a curve and there is some slight separation of materials.

If Apple repairs your iPad and does not replace it, you will get a detailed listing of parts they replaced on your repair order.
