outside for blowing $1300 for a new imac when is apple going to release Front Row for other macs. I'm sure you can buy the remote and a USB dongle for it along with the software for a package of $50 or so. This is such a great integration of all kinds of media and would be great to all those with mac minis and powermacs. Especially those with 30 inch LCDs to watch their stuff on.

P.S. Or if not apple doing it then some freeware that can do the same thing with a 4rd party remote from logitech or some other company. What would also be nice if you could play movies that YOU OWN from VIDEO_TS folders right in an app like Front Row or a 3rd party one like Matinee. But I am excited and I'm sure it won't take long for Front Row to make a splash.

This would be great, but really I'd like to see Apple make the jump and go straight to a set-top box with all the DVR/media trimmings. Shouldn't they be able to put together something with digital audio out, HDTV out, etc, for about $999? I don't have a Mac in my family room, so a Front Row package for non-iMacs is less desirable than a full box that stores and manages media with an interface like Front Row. Hooks up to the network (ethernet or wireless) to talk to other Macs for more content, and oh - it's a full Mac, too! With the optional bluetooth keyboard & mouse, you can surf the web in Safari or whatever else you'd normally do, but from the comfort of your couch.

Put me down for one of those. :D
 
The question is, if Apple releases FrontRow as a software application for any Mac, should it be freeware or payware (and if so, how much?).

I'm pleased seeing as how I have an AirClick remote...granted, not quite as fully featured, but it works with more applications (at least thus far).
 
I called the AppleStore, as far as they know there is no dongle with the remote to get it to work with any other Macs other than the new imac. So no remote = no Front Row. Well I was ready to shell out some dough, but not enough for a new iMac, pretty crappy if you ask me. :(

Well for now anyway... others have theorized that mayhap Apple will enable some sort of way to add on these features in the future. Depending on the price, I'd be sorely tempted.

add on indeed, by putting it in the new powerbooks and powermacs when they come out ^_~

just like with the iPod software in the new iPod wont be in the older ones for whatever reason, they wont put frontrow on the older Macs, just to give you another reason to buy a new computer

*sniff* Stop killing all my hope! I just got the iMac right when they announced Rev. B... they will surely find a way to retro-fit Front Row......

Either that or a third-party will come up with a simple mimic-application for its own remote (e.g. Griffin's AirClick Remote).
 
Actually, you can buy the remote as an iPod accessory, which leads me to believe that Front Row will be available for other Macs. This announcement also leads me to further believe in rumors that Apple will soon penetrate the at-home market.

Also, ignoring its latest guess, Think Secret has reported that a new Power Mac and PowerBook will be arriving shortly (probably within a week). They, probably, should have Front Row on them. But i want it on my computer without needing to dish out a load of cash for it...

i think it should cost aroud $50-$75 and include front row and the remote
and it should come free on ll new macs(like ilife)
 
Will the new PowerBooks have cameras built into them?

Ooooh... and the Cinema Displays... but not iBooks (to make PowerBooks better?) and the PowerMacs use the camera in the Cinema Displays...

OK, so maybe I don't have it just right... but it would be really cool. :D
 
i want frontrow for my g5 and cinema display!!!!

If it is release i dont see them selling it for over 69 bucks :cool:

A Bluetooth remote would be great, iMac is upstairs in the office. Potential to use an extended S-Video lead to the TV downstairs - operating the iMac remotely.

Good point. Maybe as a special-design add-on thingamagij? I like the idea, but I agree with you-- there could be issues with cameras and security.
I'd trust Apple would consider something like this if they were to make the PowerBook with it built-in.

It is just a silly little app to take snapshot of yourself or friends and then put effects on it which you can then send to mail and stuff like that. Pretty much showing off Core Image.

You gotta watch the webcast of the event, it was pretty funny seeing Steve making the funny faces.
 
Wait, so... does the new iMac have any kind of TV in, so that you could use it as a DVR, or is Front Row not quite at that level? Hmmmm...wall mounted 20" iMac G5 as a TV.... in a small room, 'twould be mad nice. :)

The iPod remote is IR, and probably only works on the new Universal Dock (which supports ALL iPods with a dock connector, just like my 3G :D)

I wonder why they dumped the remote port on the iPod though. :confused:
 
FWIW, Kensington sells a remote that works with both PCs and Macs. It's IR, and uses a little USB dongle for the computer. I saw it at CompUSA for $60 last weekend. It apparently comes with software to configure the buttons, but they're preconfigured for iTunes and some other software I can't remember right now.

Don't get me wrong i think it's cool that they put these camera into the iMacs, I also would like to see them in the Powerbooks and Cinema Displays but anyway the reason i was posting......Does anyone else think the stand alone iSight is worst quality then the one built in? I mean he did say that during the event didn't he that the iMac camera is better quality then the iSight??
