Don't get me wrong i think it's cool that they put these camera into the iMacs, I also would like to see them in the Powerbooks and Cinema Displays but anyway the reason i was posting......Does anyone else think the stand alone iSight is worst quality then the one built in? I mean he did say that during the event didn't he that the iMac camera is better quality then the iSight??

i don't think he would go and blatantly lie about it so it probably is better

No i don't think he lied either i was more inquiring about how that seems kinda like bad business. Like um, Porsche selling a car with a great engine but selling a stand alone better engine, not sure if that is a good analogy but i think you get the point.

I just watched the webcast of the announcement... I want Photobooth and Front Row so badly now!!! :(

Not to mention the Front Row. I just would love to have something like that. I am so tempted right now to purchase an iMac. :(

I think apple will keep front row exclusive to the imac for a while possibly through the holiday season  to boost imac sales but Im 98 percent sure they wouldnt be stupid enough to create this program and the remote and only put it on one of their computers cause that would be muy estupido.

I think its more the other way around right selling a "car"/imac with a great engine and a worse "engine" all by itself.

Soooo what does the remote work on? For 30 bucks and that few buttons it better be bluetooth. And if it's bluetooth, what's stopping me from using it on my PowerBook with iLife '06 next year?

Cast Your Vote!

To Apple Consumers:
Apple released many new and innovative products today, including a piece of software called "Front Row." Unfortunately this software is only available on the newly released iMacs. As a loyal Apple consumer I feel that Apple should release this software/feature as a standalone product.

Apple listens to their customers, so I urge those who feel the same way to cast their vote. Please follow the link below to read and sign the petition.

Just some tidbits as I read through this thread.

- The remote is Infrared, not Bluetooth

- FrontRow will work with just a keyboard

Personally I think Apple will wait and release FrontStage for all machines as part of the iLife '06 package. Probably the same reason they jumped to iTunes 6 so fast, needed to prep the name for '06.

Even though Front Row is iMac only, I'll still see if I can get around it. From what I've read, FrontRow is built into the system, not a seperate program you open. I am thinking you can hook up any other Mac via target mode, boot off the iMac CD on an iMac and tell it to install on the external hard drive. Guess I'll have to give it a shot next week.

10.4.3

what about 10.4.3....could it possibly come out with frontrow? i don't remember totally new apps coming in updates, but its possible. cause having frontrow would make my experience so much nice on my 20" ACD :)

There is nothing to say that the remote is Infra-Red ... I'd say it's bluetooth ... the iMac doesn't have Infra-Red ...

I am sure that in due time there will be a remote available for all Macs, and mmm, FrontRow in 10.4.3 ... Loverly!

Good luck with your hacking, iJon. And not the media view of hacking but the real sense of it-- making your equipment do something it wasn't supposed to do. If I could help, I would, but I have nothing to help with... :( but anyone who wants to donate to the, "Cool Stuff for Mechcozmo" fund is welcome to. ;)

Trust me, it's Ir. The receiver is at the back of the iMac. You can even look at the new iPod dock, Ir receiver right there in the front. Soon the tech details for the iMac will be posted on Apple's site and you can see it all from there.

I know it's been a big discussion cause Apple hasn't said anything about it on their site but the fact is slowly making it's way through the Mac related forums that it is Ir. Take a look at Apple's discussions too, they talk about it more.

The remote is IR. Just accept this. It works with the new Universal iPod Dock which has a totally obvious IR sensor on the front. The Apple Universal Remote product page on the (US) store says this in red writing in case you miss it:

"Compatible with Apple products introduced in 2005 or later that have a built-in Infrared (IR) receiver."

My personal feeling is that in a month or 2 for $50 or so you will be able to buy Front Row bundled with the remote and a USB/IR dongle.

if it was bluetooth he wouldnt have been pointing the unit at the iMac.

Also, what about using the dock as an IR receiver for FrontRow? Think about all the extra connections on a ipod dock...

2005 T_T my newton and powermac 5500 both have IR so does this mean that they wont run Front Row  ;)

I don't think that this is currently possible/supported. I admit it's a possibility, but some sort of driver would be needed at least.

I'm sure you're having a joke, but your newton and 5500 (as well as early PowerBook G4s) have IrDa. I don't think it'll work with IrDa ports...

I hope you can get front-row as an app for other macs. I can imagine getting one on a Mini, then using it as an HDTV box thing (which people have been doing for a long time now - this would just make it pwn :D)

can't they just package front row with the dock and remote, then surely you would be able to use it ?

yu do know that the dock and remote combined are 70 dollars, then add in whatever price for front row and it is easily over 100 dollars for it all
