yu do know that the dock and remote combined are 70 dollars, then add in whatever price for front row and it is easily over 100 dollars for it all

i don't understand why they would have to charge for front row for tiger - they don't charge for itunes and it will be packaged along with the new powerbooks, also if you are paying that much for the dock and remote anyway....?

can't they just package front row with the dock and remote, then surely you would be able to use it ?
At the moment no-one knows if the dock lets you control a Mac (the Apple store page indicates the dock and remote let you control an iPod). Personally I don't think the dock lets you use the remote with a Mac.

How do you know it'll be packed with any new PowerBooks? Apple certainly have not said that!

Also you could say the same about lots of other Apple software. Perhaps all iLife apps should be free too?

don't get me wrong i see your point, i just think it would be a good move for apple, to really get their product out there quick, just like itunes. also i don't know that they will be on the new power books...i'm just taking a guess, but when the do get properly overhauled it would be a hell of a thing to leave out :)

Even though Front Row is iMac only, I'll still see if I can get around it. From what I've read, FrontRow is built into the system, not a seperate program you open. I am thinking you can hook up any other Mac via target mode, boot off the iMac CD on an iMac and tell it to install on the external hard drive. Guess I'll have to give it a shot next week.

Methinks the "hardware" part of it is the H.264 decoder. Apple's policy is to do everything in software that they can. It's why if your OS crashes you can't change brightness, sound, etc. on your PowerBook. So, if your computer can do realtime H.264 decoding or is at least powerful enough to do H.264 reasonably well, the "software" side is Front Row and all the other OS ties. But we may not get those other OS ties until 10.4.3...

Could FrontRow just be a part of a Software Update? Optional OS building, Linux/*BSD style. Download the stuff you want!?

The difference is that iTunes drives extra sales (iPods and the iTunes Music Store). Front Row does not.

Front Row looks nice and dandy, however it seems more like an expose extension. Nice effects and eye-candy for the temporary amusement factor. ;) :)
Yes, that is the world of Apple. :) BTW, Front Row is used for entertainment so it as well might fun to look at. ;)

There is a remote that already works with any mac. It is from Keyspan, it is a USB media remote and it allows you remote control any application on your mac. I use it for presentation as well as controlling itunes and DVD player. So there should not be a problem with programing the remote to control Front Row since there is keyboard equivalent to controlling the Front Row.

So unless there is some specfic hardward feature in the new G5 iMacs that limit your use I do not see why it would not work on any Mac.

iLife '06

I'm banking on it coming with iLife '06. It's the perfect app to tie the iLife suite together, so that only makes sense.

In the meantime, I need to encourage groups like Centerstage and iTheater to get moving and come out with this stuff...I'd really love something similar.
