The good side of the grass.
The top left of the key pad does get very hot.

I thought of trying something, i removed the charger and went on battery.
During my break i watched around 20 mins of videos on cnn.com and then the picture started falling behind the audio and the frame rate dropped.

I am trying one last time, if it doesn't work the way it should on my new MBA (third one) im going to get a MB and wait 6-8 months so they can sort out this over heating issue.

Frankly, I think it's the best thing for you. A MB should be able to handle your vid's just fine.

I had a MB last year and NEVER ha any problems at all.

The MBA can handle these videos. Its the over heating that seems to be the issue.

If it's overheating, than it can't really handle them in my view.

I don't think the Air was targeted at a multimedia type crowd. No DVD/CD, No mic in, No stereo speakers, small disk storage devices, no swappable battery. It does absolutely fine running Excel, Powerpoint, Word, all iWorks app's, mail.

A MB should fit you better.

Had me worried there... the MBA has a stereo out mini jack... are you saying that this is mono? Or were you referring to no 1/4" phono or optical out, cause my MBP aint got them either ???

I can verify the core 2 does shut down when the temp gets hot enough. When I do converts from AVI to MP4 files, core 2 does shut down sometimes to prevent overheating.

I'm not sure when this macbook air is made.. but ya.

Thanks NC, not bought mine yet but no stereo in the headphones would have got to me!

Yeah, gots the stereo in the phones. There is a tight fit w. audio out jack & door if you're buying you should be aware of. Depending on your phones, you may need an extension to get seated all the way in.

Aside from what some have seen in vid playback, I think they're great machines. Mine's been trouble free:D

I'd definitely take it back and get a MB. They are much better, and cheaper too.

I'm passed my return allowed date and even if I didn't, theres a 139 restocking fee. Furthermore, I had a MB, i switched to a MBA. I find them extremely bulky for the same size as a MBA. And no, I'm not comparing a MB or MBA to a MBP because those are 2 completely different systems.

I'm sure if you took it into an Apple Store and explained to them your problems they'd let you exchange for a nice new MB.

If you watch as many videos as it seems by your posts, it'd probably be a wise choice. The fan is pretty small in the Air and perhaps it can't cool the processor enough for your needs.

I just got back from the apple store with my MBA. Let me just say, I HATE THIS MAN. I have him every time i go, and he doesnt help me. He tells me stuff that has no point and obviosly has nothing to do with the problem. I want to return it and buy a macbook pro but he says "I am not allowed to" GOD I F***ING HATE HIM.

p.s. I had him with my ipod touch before and he said that nothing is wrong and to "deal with it"

if i'm gonna switch, i'm gonna switch to a MBP. I highly doubt the apple store would let me do this w/o any extra costs involved.

I had a bad MB once and they let me switch to a MBP. I did have to pay the extra cost difference but it was worth it to dump that one.

You should at least try. Not sure if you've done it or not but also show them the problem.

I've noticed some others complaining of overheating and they've got firefox, safari, excel, powerpoint, entourage, itunes, skype, and a few other app's all open at once. Then throw VLC on top of it? Call me old school but I think that's a recipe for overheating or taxing any portables processor.

What should I tell the genius bar? Obviously this system gets insanely hot even on the lightest load.

If that's the case, load up a vid, make sure it gets real hot. Pause vid, put computer to sleep. Drive to genius appt., explain problem, open Air, push play and hopefully it gets hot for him too. He says, "why yes this is a problem."
Then you tell him everything you don't like about the Air and offer to pay difference to get a MBP.

Walk out of store w. new MBP that will play videos to your hearts content.

I think it'll work, really.

to make it get hot is easy, i just plug it in. That sends the temp high and fans blazing.

For the difference, I'm fine with a base model of the MBP except for the fact I used my student discount to buy this.. would they count that in also? that'll make the difference of only 100 dollars.

My Syslogd has 0.00 CPU usage even with everything running. I did notice, more now, that the fan likes to hover over 4000 RPM unlike before where its hovering at 2500RPM. Right now, the fan would pretty much be at 6200RPM all the time after a little while. Even if the system's cooled down to ~50 deg C, the fan would still be at max for a period of time before deciding to slow down.

However, I haven't found any lag w/ watching videos yet.

It looked pretty normal here. Did I miss something?

Thats the problem. It doesn't look like any major CPU load but anything, in combo with about 20% makes the CPU incredibly hot and fans go on max after a short while. All the CPU needs to be is at 25%+ and the fans will start going to 6200 in notime.

I don't lag on videos, but the system gets so hot, its really hard to even touch it sometimes.

It looks like you really need to take it in. If there's a problem like you've described, it won't take long for them to see it and help you out.

Right now, I have nothing but Mail, Adium, iTunes and Firefox on. No other programs running. Without doing anything, the system idles at 1-5% cpu.

I let the system cool, 50 deg C, fans at 2500rpm. I just play one simple video from iTunes, American Dad's newest episode d/led from the store. After 5 minutes (where I am right now), the temp is at 65 deg C, fans going at 3800rpm and climbing. CPU usage is only 25%. The battery is fully charged, so it "shouldn't" be charging continuously.

Fans at 4730rpm now (after finished writing this) and still climbing. Temps at 63deg C and not going down. CPU usage still at 20-30% jumping around.

Edit: 5700 rpm now, 61deg C, same CPU usage. The laptop is FLAT on a Glass Desk.

Edit2: Max fans now, 6200rpm, 60 deg C stable, same CPU usage. Nothing running except a empty firefox window, turned off mail, away msg on Adium, and playing 1 video on iTunes.
