Contrast is definitely significantly better on the 12.9 inch, but turns out the better display quality isn’t enough to overcome the fact that the 11 inch iPad is just a much better size for the way I use my iPad (mostly in tablet mode out of the magic keyboard). I now plan on returning the 12.9 inch and will just wait for them to come out with mini LED on the 11 inch before I upgrade again. honestly I’m not even disappointed about it, if anything this experiment just reaffirmed how much I love my 2018 11 inch iPad Pro.

The 11 inch is the perfect tablet size for me. The 12.9 inch seems significantly bigger than the 11 inch, maybe from the aspect ratio? I do think the 12.9 is a little on the large size for a portable tablet. Since every app runs full-screen, it feels like it has about as much usable screen space as my 15” MacBook Pro.

Yes, the difference in their physical sizes is exacerbated by the difference in aspect ratio.

It's massive. Really meant for productivity than media consumption.

I felt that way before, but my workflow is changing. I’m LOVING the bigger size. There are some trade-offs for sure, but for today, I’m keeping the upgrade. (I also have large hands and can still type in portrait mode with my thumbs.) :)

Just out of curiosity, how is your workflow changing? You just using it more as a laptop replacement?

I went from the iPad 7th gen to the 11. I have had a lot of iPads over the years (3, mini, mini 2, air, air 2, pro 10.5, ipad 7th gen and now M1 pro 11). Played with the 12.9 at the store. It was nice but for me if I want a 13 inch screen I would get a laptop. Also at the price of the 12.9 the MacBook Air makes more sense. After trade in I got the 11 WiFi 128gb for $514. It’s crazy to think I have a iMac/MacBook Pro/air in a tiny 11 inch tablet. The 11 is the perfect size for a fun portable beast. Also I prefer the normal lcd screen that is on the 11.

With the iPP 11” M1 in front of me I received yesterday, I didn’t expect it to be as good a screen as the mini-LCD, but I love its size for ‘personal’ in the hand use. I’d really have to justify the 12.9” by changing how I use an iPad. But, as the saying goes… ‘ 11” to use as an iPad and a sometimes laptop, and a 12.9” for a laptop you sometimes use like an iPad ’

Yea, I got the 12.9 today and it is huge. I’ll give it a week or two for me to get used it it… if the 11” had this new screen, I would probably run this one back to the store, but this screen is way way way better than the 11. I dont understand how anyone could compare it to the LCD. I have my old 10.5 right next to this one and it’s night and day - literally for blacks. I don’t see any ”blooming”.

there is a slight shadow on the edge if viewed from an angle but I would NEVER have noticed that except for macrumors. Thanks, guys.

I’ve owned every generation of iPad Pro 12.9 since with the exception of in 2018 when I tried the 11” version. While I liked the portability, it always felt like I was missing something with the smaller size. In 2020 I went back to 12.9 and couldn’t have been happier. Weight and size are something that most people get accustomed to very quickly on such devices.

I love my 11 inch for its versatility.
but that 12.9 mini led screen gives me the same feeling as comparing the first Retina display to my white plastic MacBook

I tried to go from a 2018 12.9 to a 2020 11 after wanting a smaller iPad for a while, felt too cramped and small so I offloaded it to the missus and I’ve got a 2021 12.9 coming today. I’m 6ft 5 so larger devices don’t really bother me.

Its a lovely device though, I still use it from time to time when she’s not using it for Zwift, watching movies on the treadmill, or whatever else she uses it for - feels well overkill for her and really regret not just getting her an air but still, I get some use out of it as do like the size, just not as a main machine and couldn’t justify two iPads (with a MacBook Pro M1, and a 12 Pro Max).

I upgraded from the 10.5” iPad Pro to the 12.9” M1. I love the screen size but it is a little unwieldy. I’m sure I’ll get used to it in the coming week, just as I did with my Plus and Max-sized iPhones. So far, no regrets.

The size seems fine, really it’s the weight that’s so impressively different. Again, I came from a 10.5. When I set down the 12.9 and pick up the 10.5, it’s sooo much more comfortable, but the eyes just love the real estate.

1st world problems.

Been using the 12.9 since the 2018 pro's release and after a bit of getting used to, never going back to a smaller model. It has become my primary device, using the laptop only for software development.

I can tell you my workflow changed, I was mainly using the 11” in my hands while browsing / reading and then using the magic keyboard whenever I wanted to type something longer or as a stand. With the 12.9” I am never using it in my hands and I am more using it as a laptop, even though lazy browsing on the couch is mostly by touch, I now have to use my iPhone for reading ebooks.

The 12.9” makes it possible to actually do stuff properly with multiple apps up, I can now do personal finance stuff with my budget spreadsheet up next to my bank app without it getting annoying. Or have teams up and another app to be able to reference stuff for the meeting and similar stuff.

TLDR: the 11” is a great tablet but annoying as a laptop replacement, the 12.9” is a great laptop replacement but annoying as a tablet.

I am feeling the same way here. Trying to use it like I used my 2018 11 just isn’t comfortable. Think I am going to return my 12.9 and get an 11 instead.

IPad 12.9” is really meant for work and multitasking. And for keyboard use. I have had a 12.9” and a base iPad for the past year and use the base iPad for most tablet like tasks.
