Thank you so much. :) That sounds great.

Does anyone have any recommendations, which Windows is best for playing games on the 27" imac? I can't decide between 7 and XP. Any significant differences driver- or otherwise?
I'll use Snow Leopard for everything else, so it really comes down to gaming performance.

That's Vantage, not 3DMark06.

Still, I'm rather confused about these results.
I ran the vantage test on my pc which has a 2.4ghz Quad Core, 4GB Ram, and an 8800GTS 512mb, yet I still scored a higher mark by over 1k. Even my CPU got a higher score than the CPU they posted, the i7 should easily be faster than my 2.4 quad core. They also have double the ram I do. :S

I know my graphics score should of been higher (Which it was). But my CPU was much higher than theirs.

Windows XP is end of life. No more security patches or updates.

Windows 7 is your best choice. x64 will also make your life easier as this will be the last Windows desktop OS has a 32bit version.

When I get a chance I'm going to try 3DMark06. The demos in Vantage look like ass and are duller than a paint drying marathon.

Rebooting into Windows 7 is a pain, and I've got it set up in Parallels anyway so I've little incentive to do so at the moment.

I'm going to pop Spore on there at some point.

Edit, 3DMark06:

3DMark Score 11265
SM 2.0 Score 4105
SM 3.0 Score 4753
CPU Score 4999

Microsoft will continue to support XP SP2 until April 2014. Agreed on Windows 7 being the best choice, though.

So, what is the i7 doing that it can lose out to a slower i5?

Quote from that article

Note that the iMac Core i5 and i7 are within one or two "ticks" of each other. That's because, though the Core i7 has a higher clock rate, the bottleneck is the Radeon 4850 GPU -- which is identical in each. We removed the Halo graph because the numbers didn't make sense. Until we can borrow a Core i5 again, we're leaving that graph out of this article.

Will it matter in gaming if I get 4 GB of ram or 8 GB of ram? I've just ordered the iMac i5 since the i7 doesn't improve gaming, and that's really the only reason that I would need the i7 for, so I went with i5. I'm wondering if I should get more ram or if it won't be any difference between 4 and 8 GB of ram.

As I recall, the OWC info (think it was OWC) found a .1 difference in frames per second playing Halo with 4gb instead of 8gb. Could be wrong there...

I think support for multi threading and more ram will come in the future. Will the GPU be out of date by then? Yes. I need the RAM & i7 for EWQL and Logic, so I guess I can justify it!

COD4 on OSX, max settings, Anti-aliasing at 2x... looks amazing, absolutely playable and nearly perfect. Smoother than the PS3.

...pretty dang awesome.

I reallllllly hope this MAC is able to max MW2 and l4d2/tf2... these are my little brother favs... source users : van toi max if and still have MINIMUM 30fps?
MW2 users do you javel minimum 25fps?

Thx

Anyone have any updates on their gaming on the i7? Mine is on the way so will post lots of results when I have it. Anyone play age of conan? Oblivion? Fallout 3?

I tried Red Alert 3 with everything maxxed out at native res on my i7 4GB iMac and it was probably under one fps. Completely unplayable, but I'm guessing that's mainly due to cider/transgaming port inefficiencies. Did not try it in Windows, just SL.

Really? There is a dude (the high pitched german one) showing gaming on his i7, and he is getting perfect results with RA3. Perhaps he is playing in bootcamp, or has AA/AF off...

Anyone tested Age of Conan? Free trial...pleeeeasse

Dungeons and Dragons Online works perfectly, all settings maxed except AA, which is off since it does slow things down a LITTLE in complex environments, and it really doesn't make it look any better.

I'll try Age of Conan later.
