Signing out of iCloud and back in made this work on my iPad allowing me to send shared storage announcements to those on my family plan who are using iOS 10 devices.
Just tried it, i was able to semd out the invites after logging out and in again. But there is an issue with the site where my wife can accept the invite. Ah well, I’ll try it again next week :)

Just go to your iOS device in iCloud and manage storage and select use shared data. I didn’t even go to the site on the iOS 10 devices.

I didn't get any invites. Just went to the iOS 10 devices I was adding and enabled them to take advantage of the shared storage.

Where exactly were you able to "enable" them on their devices?
In Settings/iCloud and Manage Storage (I Think?). It showed up a few minutes after I turned on the feature from my iOS 11 device.

Does this simply share an allotment of space or are files and data lumped together therefore exposing files/pics/etc to family users?

Does this work if your family members are using a different country's iTunes store (i.e. they use a different currency)?

no because being in a different region doesn't let u even be part of a family share in the first place

On my iPhone, I went to Settings/iCloud/iCloud Storage/Manage Storage and then enabled Family Sharing. After which I followed the steps above to activate it from my other iOS 10 devices on the Family plan.

Maybe, but so far from what I've seen there is no delete and re-upload of the iCloud Photo Library. It seems like it stays just the same, but the storage counts against the main Family plan. It's very smooth.

Oh good lord don't ever move your Photos library or this is exactly what they expect. I moved from internal to external drive and morons literally want to reupload a TERABYTE library because they are too stupid to let it detect differential changes or maybe, I don't know, recognize its the exact same library in a different place now?

Unbelievable level of incompetence. All I got was pretend flabbergast that anyone could have a library that large.

I'm interested to see how they implement this family sharing feature. So far the entire concept has been so poorly executed that I've had to dismiss it out of hand.

Hmm. Well I'm going to take your word on this, as I don't use iCloud Photo Library. But there's no argument that at best this is a half-assed hack around what should be implemented in a correct and straightforward way. It would in fact be simple to do if they just set up under Settings>Photos a separate (from the rest of the iCloud settings) way to log in to a joint or family icloud photo library. I mean that's what most families want, how in the world are they not understanding this?!
Because this is Apple - the standard response is that you don't understand what you really want and Apple will tell you how a family should work.

I agree, their implementation is moronic. Like an alien trying to implement a concept they have only read about but never actually seen.

How do you have a TB of pictures when your phone won't hold that much? It is my understanding that Apple does not have a solution like Amazon or Google where once a picture is uploaded to the cloud, it stays uploaded. With Apple's solution if you delete it from your phone, it deletes it from the cloud, correct?

And yes regardless, the implementation is moronic. Terrible at best.

Not sure how much space it would take on the phone but with optimization on it will only load a thumbnail on your device.

Did you find an answer to this? My family members that share my 2TB got the same emails yesterday......

Interestingly enough, I got an email from iCloud today (rather I was CC'd on an email to my wife). Interestingly enough, she is only using 18GB to backup her iPhone. Cumulatively we are using 95 GB between our phones and my MacBook Pro. I checked and my plan still has me on the 200GB plan. It seems to just send this email when someone gets moved from a paid subscription over to a family plan. Slight oversight on Apple's part.

Dear (Wife's name),
As requested, your iCloud storage will be downgraded to 5 GB on 06/25/2017. However, you are currently using 95 GB.
Unless you take action before your downgrade takes effect, backups to iCloud will stop, and apps will no longer be able to save documents to iCloud. You can either free up storage or cancel your downgrade to keep your current storage plan for another year.

To continue using these iCloud features without interruption, you can cancel your downgrade by selecting a different storage plan:

Yeah. Its funny because my wifes library is essentially a duplicate of mine. Whenever we get new photos we have to share with each other in order to maintain two identical libraries (each taking 40GB EACH on our 200GB shared plan). So we're the perfect candidates for a unified shared library.

Question: With the new share, is it going to be possible then for you to keep one photo library in iCloud and have it so that it's equally accessible and manageable by both you and your wife, other fam members?
This isn't perfect but do you two know about iCloud photo sharing? Perhaps you do but it doesn't suit your needs?

In case you're unaware, check it out. I don't know for certain but I don't think it adds the photos to the library of others who you've shared it with, so there's no duplication of libraries.

It's a bit of a manual process to add photos to iCloud shared albums, but I wouldn't want _every_ photo i have shared with my family, so this is good for me.

Just set the shared album up so subscribers can post to it too. Works for me and my family.

Maybe I've missed the focus of this thread but yeah that's exactly what apple has - iCloud Photo Library (ICPL). It will store as much iCloud storage space as you pay for. I currently have 2TB because these twits are making me duplicate my library in the cloud because I moved Photos for OSX between drives on my iMac.

Theoretically, ICPL can be used on your phone/iOS device and will display thumbnails for your library(not full copy until you select to view it full size). However the implementation is absolutely horrible at least for large libraries. I had to upgrade to paying 20, thankfully now 10 a month, for 2 TB and it just simply does not work. I have tried it on an Air 2, a 6 plus, a 6S plus, a 7 plus, and Ipad pro 12.9. It cannot function with the library as large as mine. The app crashes all the time and can never actually show all the pictures further back. I let it sync for weeks and even well over a month to try to sync up from my existing ICPL in the cloud. Complete fail. Apple support just threw up their hands when I called a few times and said it just is what it is.

It's exponentially embarrassing/pathetic for Apple since for FREE, Google photos does all of what Apple promised and more while doing it flawlessly (granted it's not 100% 1:1 archival but tests have shown negligible differences). Apple even went so far as to copy parts of google photos in its last update.

I've seriously considered dropping ICPL completely but then they lowered price down to $10 so I'm just keeping the status quo for now.

Yes I know about it. No, it absolutely is not what we need or are asking for.

So, just a follow-up.

Today my wife's iCloud account officially switched from her previous 200GB to the free 5GB tier. I got multiple emails warning that she will not enough space, but I'm guessing this is only because iOS 11 is not out to the general public yet, so I'm sure they'll work that out.
It seems that the transition went pretty smooth. Nothing noticeably different about her data now that it's "stored" in my iCloud storage.

What has happened since 6/25? Has you wife lose any data?

I got the same email yesterday.

Apple support didn't give me a convincing answer. They said everybody needs their own iCloud Drive space for backups. My understanding is that family members need some space by themselves for backups but then can use the shared iCloud Drive storage for other documents. Did your wife have any issues with the 18GB backup.

I got those same emails on 7/8. Everything has worked fine since though.

Sounds great, thesheleys!
Just a quick confirmation. Did the emails come with a 7/8 cut-off date or did they come on 7/8? I am asking this because they seem to come a week before they downgrade the accounts to 5GB. I don't want to jinx things but if you got the email on 7/8, the official downgrade might be 7/15.

My cutoff was 7/9. Haven’t had any problems.

Calling Apple Support is useless at this point, because this is still a beta feature. They will not be officially supporting this until the public release in the Fall. Use at your own risk.
