Barmeno Extra Bold on an Emergency Exit sign…

True, that is a bit weird. Barmeno: one of those faces that seems like a good idea, but the more you look at it the uglier and more dated it gets. Have used it as display type on book covers before a few years back, but in retrospect, perhaps it wasn't the best idea.

The weird thing about Barmeno is that it manages, as you say, to look horrible and dated, but without actually being dated to a specific period, so you can't even use it in a knowing, retro kind of way!

Also stumped by stencil font

Hi Apple OC,

Just wanted to let you know that I also tried to identify your stencil font but haven't come up with anything either. I assume you ran it through Identifont already - there are lots of stencil fonts there but none that look quite like this one. The closest I got was AG Book Stencil, but that looks pretty much like Helvetica with a stencil effect:
http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/berthold/ag-book-stencil-bq/
Your font is more condensed and has those odd straight sides.

Can you tell us more about the font? Where did you find it and do you have any more text besides "HOWARD"? Any chance somebody just took a regular sans serif and modified to give it a stencil look? What do you need the font for? Are you trying to match it or do you just need something close?

Cheers
Leslie

Neutra Face looks right to me

Hi Sammich,

I think you already got it with Neutra Face - wondering why you don't think that's it.

Take a look on the foundry's website at the "Display Light" version - it looks just like the type in the book to me:
http://www.houseind.com/fonts/neutraface

What particularly convinces me is that most of the capitals that have a middle stroke (like A, H and R) have it pretty low, but the B's middle stroke is much higher. The same is true of the type in your book. Unfortunately the Amazon previews are too low-res to really look at the lower case and I have to go with the all-caps titles.

Cheers,
Leslie

Hah, thanks! Yeah I didn't actually get the right variant...actually, I don't know why I thought it was different.

Well there you go, I'm blind to detail :| Thanks at least I can rest easy now knowing.

Thanks again.

they are all very similar, except the font in the picture has rounded points on the end of the lines.

I think you'll find that the rounded appearance is most likely a product of being stamped into the metal, or from wear and tear on that same metal.

OTOH, the centre bar of the E looks much shorter in your sample than in Gotham. If you can live with the E being slightly different, I've found what appears to be a free version of Gotham Light that actually is rounded here.

Cheers!
