I purchased a second hand 1.5GHz 12" PB last year with the maximum ram and a new 100gig HD for a bargain price of £200, then got a nice case and a new battery, it had its original box that was immaculate and the machine itself was perfect.

I carry it around all day every day for work and I needed something small and practical, I had the tiniest of budgets (I run a charity and we don't have very much money), it was either this or a new windows netbook. I did look into hacking a netbook and installing OS X but there didn't seem to be a good solution, and the best options looked complicated - I like things to be easy!

I love my little PowerBook and people always want to have a look at it, its a novelty, almost mythical to many who have never seen such a tiny mac. I use it for hours a day without any problems, the battery gives me 3 hours usually, and it recharges quickly.

I really would love a new Air, the 11.6" would be wonderful, but I would struggle to justify it and really struggle to afford it, this little PB just does me fine. I used to have the best machines, always top of the range, upgrade each year to newest specs of MBP, but all I ever really do is use the internet, email, word and excel, iCal, OmniFocus, and a few other apps. I can watch films, I use iTunes and iPhoto, and I stream stuff just fine, I would suspect that most people don't really need much more power than this little machine can deliver, but we all want the fastest with the best spec, I doubt many really would use it though.

If you want a tiny laptop and have a tiny budget go looking for a top quality 12" PowerBook, there are plenty out there that have been loved just like mine, and you won't regret buying one for around the price of an iPod Touch!

Thanks! They're a bit nicer quality than the grainy cell phone shots I took. I was in a hurry and didn't snap one of the two thicknesses, I'm glad one got posted!

No problem. I will post my own HQ comparison shots when mine comes in.
Really glad they released the 11.6" Air. It can now replace my beautiful 12" PowerBook G4 which I'm going to keep as a museum piece.

That PowerBook is a testament to the timelessness of Apple design, wow.

However, having worked at an Authorised Reseller here in NZ, where the little 12's were very popular, my biggest gripe with them is the TINY trackpad. Way, way, way too small for my liking and the gorgeous trackpad on that MBA really shows it up.

Thanks for the photos! It brought back the memories of my first Mac (the trusty 12" PB) and confirmed my decision to go with the 11" version. It's quite a leap from what we had back then. I paid $1600 for that thing with the student discount back in its day!

That's what I am wondering - I used to use only a 12" PowerBook and it worked fine. Sure, software uses more RAM than ever these days, but do I really need anything more powerful than the 11" MBA?

I have a 15" MBP sat here connected to my 24" Dell display. I am currently doing lots of work until at least Christmas, so this machine will be staying, with it's 250GB 7200HDD it's quite snappy.

I remember back when I started uni, the 12" PowerBook and an external monitor really were a great combination. I guess the 12" PB has more in common with the 13" MBP though...

Look at all the glorious ports on that PowerBook!
I know right, and that thickness gave us a sub-woofer under the keyboard for three glorious speakers.

LOL look @ the telephone jack! Ethernet is the telephone of yesterday.

Please. Wifi has yet to replace Ethernet. Try find any company that is serious about its security that doesn't rely on a wired network.
