same here, i wanted one for so long and got the base 9th gen on sale.

but i just never use it. my phone is always on me and the screen is big enough for reddit, forums, messaging, etc.

If i need more screen space, i have my laptop hooked up to two monitors.
Same. I have 13 PM and 16” Intel MBP and 27” LG UltraFine 5K Display. Every couple of years I get the hots for the newest iPads, but then I realize it will just sit there so much of the time

I use one iPad on my Waterrower to track activity. I just got a 12.9" M2 pro which I use for general consumption and for use with the piano. iPhone 14 PM is for phone calls, texts, browsing when I'm bored, etc. 16" Macbook PM with 64 gigs is for work (I'm a dev).

The iPad on the rower doesn't get used as much as it should :(, but everything else gets significant use daily.

I have a Lenovo laptop, iPhone and iPad Pro. I’m retired so primarily use my iPhone and iPad. iPad for entertainment, social media, Goodnotes and any typing I need to do. I keep track of everything electronically and also use the iPad for that. I actually very rarely use the laptop as I can do everything I need from the iPhone and iPad.

MacBook Pro 13” late 2013: playing Football Manager, adding quote with mendeley desktop.

iPad Pro 12.9 2018 64 gb WiFi: writing papers, reading books, studying scientific papers and handbook, video-editing, streaming, web surfing, mail management.

iPhone 14 Pro Max: whatsapp, message, instagram, linkedin, camera, web surfing and mail management on the way.
Looks like you have well-defined uses for all three devices. But the iPad is pretty important in that mix.

Yes, my iPad Pro is for sure the device that I use more, both at work and at home (just finished of using it to streaming one episode of capitan tsubasa while doing “aerosol” with my 11 months son to entertain him 😅). Maybe in the future I will choose a cellular model to use it more on the way, despite the iPhone 14 Pro Max could be okay for this kind of use. MacBook is used less then in the past since the arrive of my previous iPad Air 2 in 2015.

I'm curious... what's strange about it? There's nothing wrong with the iPhone always being in your pocket, but if you have a bigger screen available... is that be the better option?
Right. If I get a notification I can see it instantly on my watch. It's not as if my iPad or my Mac are a far distance from me when I'm in my residence and their screens are significantly larger.

I guess what I meant is my iPhone is always accessible to me , while my iPad might be upstairs or downstairs. I also have a small child so outside of naps I only have 10 minutes of random time here and there so it’s easier to pull out my phone than to go grab my iPad to use.

I guess it also does not help that iPad can’t natively do WhatsApp and doesn’t have all the apps my phone does (definitely more of a me issue).

it’s really interesting to read peoples use cases, but I just think I’m one of the few minor people where the iPad just doesn’t do much for me.

this thread is making me try again though ha!

Yeah as a huge iPad fan it's beyond frustrating when apps or the OS itself can't do things that the iPhone does. Your use case definitely makes sense.

I have a 2017 27” iMac and an iPhone many ways.13 mini.

I want a device to bridge the two for longer couch surfing/social media sessions as well as light photo editing.

An ipad would make more sense I think- but I’m also thinking about the m1 MacBook Air for those surfing and video watching sessions- with the benefit of being able to fully use my existing photo editing app that isn’t available on ipad.

They are in sale now for $799, so I picked one up to try out.
Fantastic device- but it still seems bulky for those media browsing sessions, and not as fluid as using apps for these things on an ipad or a phone.

So for me, I’m torn and thinking an iPad would be that bridge device for longer browsing sessions, for playing with some photo and video editing when not wanting to be tied to the one room in my house where the iMac sits- without completely paralleling the iMac and making it irrelevant.

But not sure yet- the MacBook Air is a great device in many ways.

One option might be an iPad and the MacBook, and simply sell my old iMac.

I had a 2017 iMac 27” 5k and sold it and purchased a Macbook Air and now an iPad, so glad I did. The iPad Air 5th Gen M1, or iPad Pro 11 M2 both have pretty powerful processors for video and photo editing. Probably the same as the Macbook Air you have.

I had considered whether selling my iMac and keeping both the iPad and MacBook might be the answer… the MacBook Air is impressive in comparison to my iMac performance-wise… only downside would be giving up the beautiful display it has… but not being static on the desk in our spare room results in it not even getting turned on for weeks at a time.

Yes, the iMac 5k screen is really nice, but honestly I get more use out of my Macbook Air and now iPad Air. I’m really loving the fact I can sit anywhere in the house with the iPad and have a pleasant experience with a larger than iPhone screen surfing the internet, stream, and do social media, as well as read.

Ever since my employer adopted OneDrive for Business my iPad is now my main device while traveling. I can review and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents and share them with colleagues while traveling. My iPad is a “managed device” so my employer can install our VPN, etc onto it and sandbox corporate apps. We don’t support Macs as managed devices so advantage iPad there.
Same here. That's why I invested in the 12.9" iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard this time around.

As someone who owns a 2013 iMac (that’s slowly starting to crap out), iphone, and iPad Pro, I do enjoy the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard combo. However, the battery life sucks. Let me rephrase that. The battery life sucks compared to the MacBooks. I had the m1 air and the m2 air. Those things can last for days under my usage. But the ipad battery is making it a tough sell for me. I can literally watch the percentage drop 10% within 35-45 mins of web browsing. It’s definitely a 4-5 hour device using continuously and even worse if your playing some games here and there. I value battery life.

I’m still within my 2 week trial with this M2 pad pro. I have a brand new monitor in a box ready to replace the aging iMac. Just trying to figure out the best work flow for me. While I do enjoy the freshness of iPad OS compared to a traditional laptop, they have a few things to work out including battery life. What I might end up doing is:

Returning the Magic Keyboard and iPad Pro for a 14’ or 16’ MacBook pro for my monitor
Get 11’ iPad Pro 3rd or 4th gen With keyboard.

This might be the best set up for me.

I am not going to lie and say price matters or doesnt matter. I usually decide if the money being spent is value to me or not and this purchase is leaning towards not.

I have similar setup, with mba, iPad Pro 11+ magic keyboard and external monitor. I use ipad mainly for reading, browsing and watch movies on the couch. For other (serious) stuff, I use macbook. Sometimes I use MacBook for watching movie or mba + external monitor - both are bigger screen than iPad.
When I travel, I bring iPad + MK or MBA interchangeably, depending type of work and travel duration. iPad is fascinating devices but it has limitations which you can’t fully rely on it.
Hope this helps.

It's just not the same device as the other two. In my opinion:

Mac: The ultimate Apple machine, albeit in a traditional and familiar form factor. The workhorse. The superset of all Apple software.

iPhone: All the best stuff about all the Apple gadgets all in one little pocketable device. The best place to get the newest features. Probably my most important device especially when teaming up with an Apple Watch.

iPad: An amazing in-between mixture of all of the above. Better than my Mac and my iPhone for e-reading, gaming, notetaking, sketching, browsing etc. It doesn't have to be much more than that and I don't need it to be. I treat it as an extension of my iPhone and my Mac, but also sometimes as the replacement for one or both as well. It can broadcast itself up on a monitor and be used with keyboard and mouse like an iMac or MacBook, it has amazing handwriting recognition, it works just like my iPhone, and I feel like iPadOS multitasking has FINALLY hit a usable and reliable state.

iPad is not always the best tool for the job, but to me it's almost always the most versatile one.

You’ve gotta go with what works for you, the combo of the macbook pro and iPad Pro sounds great.

I use my 12.9" iPad Pro for watching video content during my morning treadmill run and before bedtime, drawing in Procreate with my Apple Pencil, answering email, surfing the web, reading e-books and e-magazines, looking at my photos collection, playing with GarageBand and some synthesizer apps, and listening to music. I use my 2019 27" iMac for "heavier" apps like Adobe CC, MS Office, Logic, and some other photo-editing apps. I recently gave my 2015 MBP to my dad, thinking my iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard would replace it as a secondary device when I need portability. It suffices for most things, but I miss having portable access to my Mac apps, so I'm thinking of selling my iMac and getting an M1 MBP.

It’s an interesting question. Essentially, why so many devices? The real and simple answer seems to be, because one device cannot do all things well. Each device fills a gap and the iPad fills the gap between phone and laptop to provide a mobile app experience on a larger screen -OR- a desktop app experience on a smaller screen. You choose!

I have a 2018 iPad Pro, Intel i7 Mac Mini and iPhone X. The iPhone is used for the most part as just a phone and for messaging but occasionally for emails and video. The other 75% of the time my iPad Pro handles everything else. The Mac Mini was used mainly for music production but mostly sits idle nowadays. So basically, portable = iPhone, at home = iPad.

I used this on my recent travels to Thailand. We took planes, busses, ferries, and boats, and this was an absolute lifesaver. If I felt the least bit queasy I would pop one and in just a few minutes feeling better already. Since it's natural ginger, you actually begin to develop an appetite soon after the queasiness passes. I even gave out some gas to my fellow travelers when they felt uneasy and they would ask me where I got them from and I would direct them to here :) I actually ran out of them by the end because of my generosity, and couldn't find them anywhere in Thailand!! Would recommend 100%!
